Best Harry Potter Characters

The Top Ten

1 Hermione Granger Hermione Granger

Love her! I fantasize her doing everything! Dueling wizards, flying brooms, conjuring spells! Go Granger! A priceless gem for Gryffindor! - micks

She cool, charming, intelligent and lovable.!

She was my crush since the first harry potter movie. Pretty, witty, brave, friendly (most of the time), and she's just the girl I'm looking for.

Hermione Granger is so awesome! She punched Malfoy in the face! (That foul, loathsome, evil little cockroach! ) Hermione helped Harry and Ron all the way through the series. If she wasn't there, Harry and Ron would have gotten nowhere. Even though Ron left Harry in part of year 4 and during their Horcrux hunt, Hermione stayed with Harry. (Not saying Ron is a bad person) Hermione will ALWAYS be my favorite character no matter what. "Just because you have the emotional range of a teaspoon doesn't mean we all have." "Fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself." "Now if you two don't mind I'm going to bed before either of you come up with another idea to get us killed, or worse EXPELLED! "

2 Harry Potter Harry Potter Harry James Potter is the title character of J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. The majority of the books' plot covers seven years in the life of the orphan Potter, who, on his eleventh birthday, learns he is a wizard.

HARRY POTTER has to be at number 1! Who saved the Philosopher's stone? Who got rid of Riddle and the dementors? Who saved sirius and escaped voldemort? Who helped dumbledore in getting slughorn's memory? Last but not the least, WHO THE RUDDY HELL KILLED VOLDEMORT? IT WAS HARRY POTTER!

After reading Deathly Hallows many times I have just realized that Snape would never have saved harry if he hadn't been on dumbledore's side. And he would have never been on dumbledore's side if he hadn't loved Lily Potter. It was lily potter who saved harry from voldemort. So actually, Lily should be at no. 2!

This list is about who is objectively the best character, not who is the most heroic. Lily was a total Mary Sue (the biggest one in the series). She should absolutely not be number two. - Ravenclaw

He is the most relatable character in the series, showing us even an ordinary looking boy is capable of doing things that can change the world. It taught us to not judge by looks ( yes, harry was not the best looking character in the BOOK not the movies ) and look within the heart. He had many flaws, many of them. And many good qualities too. The perfect blend of them made him one of the most complex and life like character in the series. Whenever I see Harry, I feel like I am seeing a mirror image of myself. Many feather headed morons feel that he is a ' boring character not suitable as a hero '. Guess what? The simplicity of Harry makes me think that he is a PERFECT hero of the series. I am sure many girls would have been happier to see Malfoy as a hero than Harry, sorry state of affairs.

I love harry! He's brave to a fault, compassionate, modest, smart and selfless. He does have his flaws but that's what makes him so great. He's probably went through more than any other character in the series but he still battles on. Despite his outbursts, I think he handles everything surprisingly well considering how much he's got to deal with and the fact that he's also a teenager. He's also the lord of sass. Plus... He's the boy who lived... Need I say more - lily_hp

Harry should be number 1. Because who saved the world from voldemort.

I feel like Harry Potter is a good character in the fact that he saved the world and all that, but his personalty isn't really one you'd want in a friend. At points he's not very nice to Hermione nor Ron and treats them their below him. - Pebblepaw

The same can be said of Ron and Hermione. They were not always nice. At some point Ron ditched Harry when he needed him the most. And Hermione can be very immature at times. In the books at least. - maeli

3 Severus Snape Severus Snape Severus Snape is a fictional character in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. He is characterised as a person of great complexity, whose coldly sarcastic and controlled exterior conceals deep emotions and anguish.

Severus Snape is the man that every mother should teach her little boy to be. Yes, he made mistakes. A lot of them, actually. And yes, most of the time, you wanted to punch the living daylights out of him and watch him writhe in pain on the floor, but all that was a ruse. He was tough as nails, and wasn't the most socially graced person to walk the Earth, but he was loyal to what he loved. The only thing he loved, truly loved, was Lily Evans; his only friend and confidant. Until the day of his death, he lived his life in a manner that (he hoped) would make Lily proud of him. I kind of think that he did. He defended the last remain of her flesh and blood, borderline cared for him with every last drop of blood in his body. He was fierce and fearless, and brilliant. I could only wish that every man would do that for the woman they loved. I sure do hope that my kids do.

This is interesting because I don't think that being a role model was the point of Snape's character at all. I think he's a good character because he's complex and interesting. I don't really consider him a nice person or someone to be looked up to. - Ravenclaw

He saved Harry, died for Harry and became a Death-Eater for the order of the Pheonix!

Severus Snape was the farthest from a perfect man you could get, but he was the bravest and most selfless man you could ever meet. Whatever the reason for his actions (guilt, unrequited love, maybe even some morality), he was willing to risk his life for Harry Potter. He was willing to take on and lose his life to the most powerful Dark Wizard ever know AND die being known as one of the worst villains.
Many people question Snape's treatment of his students. However, keep in mind, he had to treat them poorly to be a believable spy as Voldemort had loyal spies everywhere. He hated Neville because the prophecy could have been about him, and if Voldemort had believed that, Lily would have likely lived. He hated Harry because James Potter was a horrendous bully to him. While James may have "grown up a bit", which is never shown, it doesn't excuse him of his actions. When Snape looked at Harry, all he could see was James and losing Lily. DESPITE THIS, he still protected him with his ...more

I honestly don't like Snape very much. Although he turned out to be a good guys in the end, he was never a good person. I know Snape had a crush on Lily, but he should have given up after she started going out with James. I know it's horrible James & Sirius bullied Snape, but was the way he treated Harry really necessary? It's completely unfair that Snape treated Harry badly just because he didn't like Harry's father. If he cared so much about Lily, couldn't he try to be nicer to her son? Although Severus Snape was very brave, he doesn't seem like a good person to be around. I feel like more people pay attention to the fact that he saved the day than his actual personality. - Pebblepaw

He was acting when he treated Harry badly. He wanted to show the Voldemort that he was really in his side and hated everyone against him. (at least that's how I interpreted it) - EllenseaFornost

4 Albus Dumbledore Albus Dumbledore Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore is a fictional character in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series.

I think he is truly the most complex and interesting character in the series (yes even above Snape), and for me the most beloved. I think he is critically misunderstood by many, seen as a scheming, uncaring mastermind.

However, it is abundantly clear to me, from almost every scene that JK Rowling writes him in, every line of dialogue, that Dumbledore is the character who understands more deeply than any other the nature and power of love.

The power of love is the ultimate theme of Rowling's novels and Dumbledore's character is for me a perfect example of ultimate human compassion. He demonstrates over and over again, to Harry and every other person he encounters, the power of love, compassion and self-sacrifice, and he himself embodies these virtues more than any other, even Snape, in thought, deed, word and intent. These qualities are the reason he is so adored and revered by the wizarding world, not to mention his humility (though not too much of it; he is well aware ...more

::Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone::

"'you think he meant you to do it [save the Stone]? " said Ron. "Sending you you're father's cloak and everything? "

"Well, " Hermione exploded. "if he did - I mean to say - that's terrible - you could have been killed. "

"No, it isn't. " said Harry thoughtfully. "He's a funny man, Dumbledore. I think he sort of wanted to give me a chance. I think he knows more or less everything that goes on here, you know. I reckon he had a pretty good idea we were going to try, and instead of stopping us, he just taught us enough to help. I don't think it was an accident he let me find out how the mirror worked. It's almost like he thought I had the right to face Voldemort if I could... "

You are wring, I hate to be the one to break it to you but you are all wrong. Albus Dumbledore is the greatest character ever. He's complexed in a way that isn't revealed until the seventh book and even with his past he still shows a genuine care for Harry. His character is dynamic and thorough especially his dialogue and how he almost always speaks in riddles. He serves a major part in the story and that plot that isn't forced, making the whole book character driven. How he seems to know it all, and knows how much he should or shouldn't tell, and his judgment of character in others, he is the most trustworthy and all-knowing character in the book.

In my opinion, Dumbledore is another overrated Harry Potter character. For starters, he was horrible to his family. In the fourth book, he mentions that he doubts Aberforth can read. Dumbledore never bothered to mention his family, and it was his fault that his sister died. Also, he used Snape and Harry for the "greater good". - Pebblepaw

5 Ron Weasley Ron Weasley Ronald Bilius "Ron" Weasley is a fictional character in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. His first appearance was in the first book of the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as the best friend of Harry Potter and Hermione Granger.

Ron, though not as talented as Harry or as smart as Hermione, was still (almost) always there. He did take jealousy too the extreme but it was because he was insecure. He's constantly overshadowed and a lot of people will be able to relate to that. Though he can be a little too mean and sarcastic and oblivious to people's feelings, his heart is still in the right place. Ron always seems a couple of steps behind the rest of the golden trio but when put to the test, he proves he's just as capable as them - lily_hp

Actually Ron is very talented. Remember that slug-hex? It is non-verbal! - AshleyChang

Ron is as talented as Harry and Hermione, just in a different way. He is so good at chess. Hermione, the brightest witch of her age, couldn't beat Ron's flawless plans when it comes to chess!
(To be honest, I think the movie messed him up. He was really humorous in the books, not in the movies though...) - EllenseaFornost

Ron Weasley is my second favorite character of all time. (My first is Qibli from Wings of Fire) He is one of the most realistic characters in the series. He is just as talented as Harry and Hermione, and should be number one on this list.

Besides Luna, I loved Ron. He's funny and nice, even though he gets into fights a lot...I really liked him and I think he should be higher on the list.

6 Sirius Black Sirius Black

Okay literally, Sirius Black had one of the saddest lives - he grew up in the house of Black, and was hated for not being more like his parents, then he went to Hogwarts and became a Gryffindor and was hated by his parents even more, then eventually he got disowned, burned off the tree, and all, then he graduated and there was the problem of Voldemort and all, so he joined the Order of the Phoenix, watched people around him die, then he had two of his closest friends die and one of his closest friends betray him. Then he literally went to Azkaban and didn't even get a trial even though he didn't commit the crime. He was in Azkaban with the dementors for 13 years. Like 13 years. Then he literally started to go mad, but his innocence kept him sane and he escaped finally to go avenge his friend's deaths. THEN he did but all his plans were ruined by Peter escaping again, and he had to run away again and hide while everyone kept looking for him (oh and he almost got soul sucked by ...more

Harry's relationship with him, considering they only meet a few times, is so strong, which makes it more tragic in the end :'(

The reason Sirius Black is the most important character is his journey. He was born into a evil family and was still able to turn into a loving, brave, funny and loyal young man. And then, what I possibly like the most about him, he arrived at Hogwarts found three friends who were the first people he has ever loved and decided to live his life to the fullest. And yes, Sirius has done bad things and he sometimes was a bad person. But I believe at the end of the day he realized that he will not be like his family and tried to be the best he could. What I love (love, love, love) about Sirius is that he wasn't perfect at all. His most famous quote was, that everyone has a dark and a light side but what matters is the part you choose to act on, and he did. He chose his light side and he gave his life for the people he wanted to protect and the ones he loved. Like Harry and Snape he didn't grow up with love and it made him even stronger. So Sirius is definitely one of the best, if not the ...more

Sirius is basically the biggest badass in the history of literature. He went through so much throughout the series and stayed strong, such as staying in Azkaban for 12 years, having his best friend die, and not being able to see his godson for most of his life. Also, in the Order of the Phoenix, he is stuck up in Grimmauld Place when he wants to go help. Also he dies, which can be pretty difficult; but he is always there for Harry before that happens, and even after when he uses the resurrection stone.

7 Luna Lovegood Luna Lovegood Luna Lovegood was a witch, the only child and daughter of Xenophilius and Pandora Lovegood. Her mother accidentally died while experimenting with spells when Luna was nine and Luna was raised by her father, editor of the magazine The Quibbler, in a rook-like house near the village of Ottery St Catchpole more.

Luna Lovegood. I absolutely love her. She's funny, sweet, friendly, and a little wacky, but in the most lovable way possible. She taught me how to be positive in situations. And I just love that despite her constant dreamlike state, she's still very intelligent (she's in Ravenclaw, hello). She cares about her friends and supports them, can see what's going on in people's minds, and who wouldn't want to be friends with her? She would never ditch you or say bad things about you. She's the perfect friend. Forever. Plus, I love that Harry names his daughter after her (and his mum. )

Luna is my favorite character from any book, movie, video game, anything! She inspires me. I love everything about her, but the best thing about Luna is that she is very odd (in the best way) and people sometimes say mean things about her, but that doesn't stop her from being herself. I think we can all learn from that. She's also really funny, sweet, and the type of person I would want to be best friends with. She's loyal and would always have your back. I love Luna!

Luna Lovegood is by far my favourite harry potter character, she's kind, caring, considerate and thoughtful. She is what everyone must try to be. Even though people call her names and hide her things she is still kind and loyal to them. Lets all remember that her mother passed when she was only nine, that's a very young age, yet she still doesn't need a shoulder to cry on or she doesn't go around crying and looking miserable. She should be in front of severupus and dumbledore. She is different, she is funny and doesn't care what other people think of her. She is the BEST harry potter character

Luna Lovegood was called luny because she was so luny she became our favorite character people teased her which is unfair treatment for such a nice character. With her cool glasses and Nergeles she is the favorite and the best character. When she found Harry on the train nocked out it was very nice and kind of her to help out harry and fix his broken noise.

8 Remus Lupin Remus Lupin

I love Remus Lupin. He always is so kind to the trio and other people and he cares more for others than himself. Its really sad that he dies. He and Tonks made such a lovely couple. He is extremely calm and quiet for a werewolf. He was the one that realized Sirius was innocent and he saved Harry's life (department of mysteries). I was glad to see that he got some happiness with Tonks and Teddy. It was sweet to see him so excited in shell cottage. Most people think that Remus and Tonks's ending was really sad, but aside from the fact that he is not with Teddy and other loved ones, it really means that he can eternally be with Tonks, Sirius, James, and Lily with no fear of the second war. I just wish that he got to spend more time with his family before he died.

Lupin is a great character for he's brave smart and experienced although he is a werewolf he is loving and supports Harry potter throughout the books

Remus Lupin is so awesome. I honestly think he can be just as bad-ass as Sirius (and James), and any other character for that matter; with the added bonus of keeping his head in a crisis, and being responsible. It also breaks my heart about how afraid he was to hurt anyone with his werewolf condition, and how hard he fought with himself about marrying and having a child with Tonks. He faced discrimination and was shunned by most of the wizarding world, for something that he couldn't help. He stayed strong through it all: being a werewolf, losing James and Sirius, finding out that Peter was a traitor, and both wizarding wars, along with a ton of other things. Also, it pained me so much when Sirius died, he was the one keeping the most calm and HE was the one who held Harry back, even though at that point he had just lost HIS BEST FRIEND. Remus Lupin is a completely under appreciated character, and he deserves much more than that.

Remus John Lupin. What can I say? I can't think of a single thing wrong with this amazingly perfect man. Professor R. J. Lupin is a hero, a kind and wonderful werewolf who does everything he can to help other people in everything they do. I love Remus and I always will. Remus Lupin forever!

9 George Weasley

Fred and George are amazing.

These two guys are hilarious; pulling pranks all over the place. their jokeshop is awesome. but I always mix them up

Love him! My favorite character actually.

The funniest o the lot

10 Lord Voldemort Lord Voldemort Lord Voldemort is a fictional character and the central main antagonist in J. K. Rowling's series of Harry Potter novels. Voldemort first appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which was released in 1997.

The Dark Lord is the best

He is one of the best-written villains in fantasy books. - EllenseaFornost

Without him, what would the climax be for most of the stories?

The Contenders

11 Neville Longbottom Neville Longbottom

What the heck? DRACO? BELLATRIX? VOLDEMORT are higher up than Neville? Are you kidding me right now? Neville is amazing. He was bullied by Draco, Pansy, basically all the Slytherins, not to mention Snape who basically tortured him his whole life, so cruelly and viciously that Snape was his biggest fear?! And SNAPE is higher than Neville? Sorry, but nothing Snape does will ever make up for his absolutely evil, cruel nature. Neville took on Crabbe and Goyle by himself in their first year! He killed Nagini, which saved Harry's life. He loved his parents so much even though they were loony and didn't recognize him. He stuck up to Bellatrix, he risked his life so many times to defend his parents. He restarted the the. He gives hope to all the poor supposed "losers" out there. He proves that just because no one believes in you does not mean that you can't do everything that you want to do. He is made of completely utterly pure GOODNESS. There is not one unlikable trait about Neville from ...more

Okay, so I really liked Neville. My top three would consist of:
1 Luna
2 Ron
3 Neville
Okay so I didn't include Harry or Hermione or Dumbledore, but those three deserve to come first. They were my number 1 favorite characters in all the movies and the books as well.

He had an amazing transformation. At the beginning he was that clumsy unlucky bullied kid, and by the end of the last movie he became a badass brave loyal young man. He became a hero. And that's why he's my favourite character.

Neville Longbottom is the most underrated Harry Potter character in the whole Harry Potter Franchise. He went from zero to hero through out the whole franchise, in the Philosopher's Stone he was constantly bullied by Slytherine for no reason. Neville, we love him, I love him and you love him. Neville is a character who is treated in a way which makes us all love him. Neville doesn't get enough credit, because he is a very talented wizard, he was constantly abused by his family he was even dropped out of a window to be proven a wizard. He has a constant bad luck streak! Severus Snape always scares him. Despite being the victim in the movies he has the biggest heart and will fight along side his friends and stand up to the evils, such as Bellatrix Lestrange, Draco Malfoy and even Voldemort. He is the one who stood up to Voldemort and gave the greatest speech in Harry Potter History! Plus Neville has changed through out the years becoming shy, mistreated and innocent to strong, ...more - EJ0602

12 Draco Malfoy Draco Malfoy Draco Lucius Malfoy is a character in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. He is a student in Harry Potter's year belonging in the Slytherin house.

I have often had cause to remark on how unnerved I have been by the number of girls who fell for this particular fictional character although I do not discount the appeal of Tom Felton, who plays Draco brilliantly in the films and, ironically, is about the nicest person you could meet . Draco has all of the dark glamour of the anti hero girls are very apt to romanticize such people.

Excuse you? Really, Rowling? Let s look at one of the characters that very much similar to Draco Malfoy. Sirius Black and James Potter. James Potter was a rich pureblood kid who immediately start to pick on Severus Snape because he was poor and later because he was a rival for Lily s affections. And yes Snape wasn't completely innocent at how the relationship between these two

Yes, I know that Snape wasn't completely innocent. He did some horrible crap in relation, but it was James who originally started the feud. James Potter didn't however it wasn't until Sirius almost LED him to his DEATH ...more

I'm kinda confused. Are you saying that Malfoy is somehow better than James because James bullied only one person and Malfoy bullied many? - Pebblepaw

Draco deserves so much more then what he has. In the last few books he suffered with so many mental issues. Over the entire series, his father pushed him so hard to fulfill their family legacy. It broke my heart when Draco's boggart turned into his father. Draco grew up in a twisted enviroment with a father who messed with his head and wanted him to live up to some unrealistic standard. If only Draco had grown up with better friends. Like, If he had been put in any other house, sure his father would have been mad, which would have caused him some more issues, but he would have been in a much better state, mentally.

If he had been in Ravenclaw, Luna, being the other outsider of the house (and entire school), would have befriended him and they could have learned from each other. Luna being the wise and sweet person that she is, could have helped him get through his problems at home and even confront his father at some point. (This is why I ship Luna x Draco)

If he had been ...more

Draco is incredible. He may have been a bully, but you can EASILY see in the last few movies that he feels guilty and that he doesn't want to be a death eater. Quote from Draco "I have to do this, I have to kill you or they'll kill me." he didn't want to kill Dumbledore (and he didn't) but he was just trying to save himself. Besides he pretty much saved Harry in the Deathly hallows when Harry, Hermione and Ron were captured and Bellatrix asked Draco if it was Harry so they could kill him (harry was injured so they didn't know) and Draco said he didn't know even though he clearly knew... Bottom line DRACO ROCKS

I've never liked Draco. He hated Harry for no reason. (Besides the fact that Harry didn't want to be his friend.) He's rude and annoying, and I feel like most people like him because they think he's hot. Malfoy tried to kill Harry, watched while he was about to be tortured, mocked Harry and his friends and yet people still seem to like him. Also, I wonder if Malfoy cares at all that he almost killed Ron and Katie Bell? I doubt it. - Pebblepaw

13 Ginny Weasley Ginny Weasley

I don't really understand why so many people hate Ginny. I think she's really funny and witty. I love her progression from a shy girl who couldn't say a word in front of her crush, to a confident young woman who is sure of herself. You don't instantly know who you are, you've got to find yourself, which Ginny does. She's very brave, strong - minded and won't take crap from anyone. - lily_hp

I personally am not a huge fan of Ginny. She, to me, just seems like the stereotype romance girl. In the first and second books/movies, she can't even say anything in front of Harry. Then, in the the third book, Ginny isn't really mentioned. But in the 4th book, Ginny secretly likes Harry but doesn't say when she realizes Harry likes Cho. Then, in the 5th book, Ginny is jealous of Harry and Cho but doesn't say it. Instead, she dates other boys, which continues through the fifth, until at last, she ends up with Harry. Then they split up.

Ginny is the best character along with hermione

Ginny is my favorite. She is nice, kind, funny, smart, and will stand up for people. Ever realize how Ginny was the one who always saved people in the deathly hallows. Ginny is so amazing and kind. Best. Character, ever

14 Dobby Dobby

His death was one of the saddest moments of the entire series (I'm pretty sure everyone in the cinema was crying).

Master gave Dobby a vote! DOBBY IS FREE

Dobby and Hedwig are two of the saddest deaths... - EllenseaFornost

He tried to save harry from a terrible fate, he is the only reason harry wasn't killed by voldemort in 7 part 1, and in the book, he is the one who gives harry the thing that lets him breath under water and finds the room of requirement - bilbro29

15 Rubeus Hagrid Rubeus Hagrid Rubeus Hagrid is a fictional character in the Harry Potter book series written by J. K. Rowling. Hagrid is introduced in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as a half-giant and half-human who is the gamekeeper and Keeper of Keys and Grounds of Hogwarts, the primary setting for the first six novels. more.

Rubeus Hagrid is my favorite Harry Potter character next to Hermione Granger. Hagrid is totally the best and should totally at least be in top ten, or switch places with Ginny, because she is just a Mary Sue dressed pretty. Hagrid was always my favorite, ever since he set foot in the place where the Weasleys were on vacation. Especially when he meant to turn Dudley into a pig, but ended up giving him a pig tail. That was hilarious. Hagrid is so kind-hearted, warm, funny, loyal, dedicated, trust-worthy, open-minded, brave, and protective. Hagrid was the closest father Harry could get, even more than Sirius Black, because of how kind and caring he was to Harry was much more help to Harry than Sirius. Hagrid would be a wonderful father, if he was one. And Hagrid told Harry he was the wizard. Without Hagrid, Harry would still be stuck with the Dursleys and never would have learned the truth about being a wizard. And along with that, Hagrid baked Harry a birthday cake to go along with it, ...more

Seriously guys, Hagrid is the closest father figure Harry could ever get! He was always with Harry and always trusted him, he gave Harry a birthday cake, the series started when he carried Harry to Privet Drive and ENDED when he carried dead Harry...

He should be higher - ArianaMarvelHPVine456

Kind, big and clumsy with a big heart. He's my favourite character out of all of them, including the doctor.

16 Bellatrix Lestrange Bellatrix Lestrange A psychotic death eater who escaped from Azkaban, and is fiercely loyal to Voldemort. Murderer of many people such as Sirius Black, and also a sadist who drove the Longbottoms mad.

My favourite always has been always will
Psychotic and ruthless
Love her to bits

Bella is awesome!
I love her craziness and everything.
And she is not all evil, she was made like that.
The Black family is known for being interested in dark arts and their obsession of keeping the line and the wizarding world pure. And that's how Cygnus and Druella Black raised their daughters.
Yes, Andromeda was strong enough to leave all of this behind her and see how wrong this all was, but Bella just couldn't. They had already brainwashed her and she wasn't strong enough to do anything against it. She was strong in another way, a powerful witch, but she couldn't see past the Black pureblood obsession, like Sirius and Andromeda did. That's what made her what she was in the end.

But still, I love her. She amazes me. And her character really makes

Bellatrix should at least be in the top ten!

Hate her - ArianaMarvelHPVine456

I'd say the strongest deatheater (maybe even stronger than voldemort) shes also my favourite character, shes crazy, scary and strong. plus she was the last death eater standing at the battle of hogwarts (besides voldemort himself) and finally, who couldn't love helena? - Vianessity

17 Minerva McGonagall Minerva McGonagall

she has a fantastic (dry) source of humour... and is cooler than she looks in the first glance

Not all queens wear a crown, this one wears a hat.

"not at all DoLoREs! "

Queen - ArianaMarvelHPVine456

18 Nymphadora Tonks

She teaches you to be yourself no matter what and is so crazy... amazing! Not to mention lupin is her love interest... that coupling is one of the best in the series!

Nymphadora is like my 2nd favorite after Ginny - GinnyWeasleyLuna

Tonks should be so much higher, why is she below bellatrix who murdered her for gods sake! - Potterhead

she's the coolest witch in the series. my 3rd favorite character, following Hermione and Snape.

19 Alastor Mad-Eye Moody Alastor Mad-Eye Moody

He was so funny, even when trying not to be! He was a focal point of the 4th book, and his death hit me really hard. So unexpected! Also, fun fact: my dad named his boat "Constant Vigilance" after him. He named his other boat "Azkaban".

I personally find it funny that who we know as Mad-eye is actually mostly Crouch Jr.

Yeah, we only meet the real mad eye for the order of the Phoenix scenes and the battle of the seven potters - Potterhead

Constant Vigilance

He's so important I was so bummed when he died

20 Horace Slughorn Horace Slughorn

He is friendly, which is a rare gift among the Slytherins - AshleyChang

He should be higher. Definitely in the morally gray area. - Ravenclaw

I am not theft sure but he is good.

Cool Professer. Just the give him WAY too much screen time.

21 Molly Weasley Molly Weasley

She is really the best Weasley. We need to get her above Ron, Ginny and Fred & George (they shouldn't even be combined: they're different people...) Even though her kids & husband are a bit disappointing (other than King Percy) she is great. And she should definitely not be below Tonks (Tonks could hardly be considered relevant). MOLLY! MOLLY! MOLLY!

She is the ultimate savage

She's not only the mother to the weasley's but also to the entire order - lily_hp

She is not only the mother of all the Weasley children, but she takes in Harry as one of her own in every sense. She is very likable, has a great sense of humor, and is a brilliant wizard, being the person to finally kill Bellatrix Lestrange. She deffinitely belongs on the top ten.

22 Kreacher

Made me laugh when leading elves into battle in the last book

I love how he leading the houseelves into battle - Potterhead

Kreacher is one of the most complex characters in the entire series. At first, he puts on an evil/mean persona around others, but once the trio begins to spend more time with him in DH, he reveals what a flawed and emotionally damaged character he really is. Kreacher for top 20! - Ravenclaw

He's not my favorite character (<3 Snivellus) but he deserves the top 20: he's so complex and underrated! That might be because of the movies, that completely eclipsed him for the main plot: getting the locket. But he, like Bellatrix, appeared only in the fifth book, and what an appearance for both of them. They both killed Sirius, but while Bella did it to "cut off the bad branches on her family tree" Kreacher actually had a good reason. Not just that, his relationship with Regulus was so deep, and seeing Sirius be like "Yeah, my brother, total loser! " he had so much compressed anger inside of himself. You see him in Deathly Hallows, when they're planning the assault of the Ministry, he's so happy just because Harry Ron and Hermione treated him decently, and gave him Regulus locket. His motivations are really complex, which makes a complex character that not so many people can enjoy!

23 Hedwig

He's so cute I have him as a teddy

Hedwig is such a beautiful owl. I like her she is wonderful pet to Harry. - Badabooo2

Hedwig is not a character! An owl for gods sake! Oh we might as well put Norbert on this list now... - Annabel154

24 Fred Weasley Fred Weasley

Fred is the my favourite

Wait, Fred Weasley is under Hedwig? I love Hedwig, but...

Why is George so much higher than Fred, to be honest I prefer George but why are they like 20 places apart? - Potterhead111

I will admit he is not my favorite. However he does not deserve to be this low on the list! I am going to be honest here. I didn't cry when Dumbledore died. Or when Moody died. Or when Hedwig died (almost did though). I had never cried for any character death in any book, movie, or T.V. show. But then Fred died and finally I cried. It was only two tears but that's more then any other character death. Fred was a hilarious and awesome character and didn't deserve to be this low down.

25 James Potter

I just have this beautiful imagination of him being the cocky popular boy in school but deep down he's sweet and brave and would do anything for Lily, including becoming a better person. It's literally the most adorable love story ever! Besides Larry Stylinson. And him and Sirius being the school bad ass's together is the most glorious thing. Long live the mauraders!

He is super cool. I mean he hexed but that's more like pranking and bullying snape bought it.

He was a bullying toerag as a child to quote Lily, but he was also extremely loyal and loving friend to those he cared about, and would do just about anything for his loved ones. And most importantly; while he was an arrogant jerk sometimes as a child, he /grew up/. He grew up and became a man worthy of love and a fantastic role model. I am sure he was a marvellous father while still alive. James had a lot of flaws, and as young really needed to step down a peg and stop bullying people, but even while horrible to some he was still a wonderful friend. And like I said, he matured and became someone Lily could be proud of and love. The fact that Lily married him is all the evidence we need that he was a good man, and we've got more than that, even. So yes, James had a lot of flaws, but in the end of his life his good nature and redeeming qualities more than made up for them.

As a child he was obnoxious, but I think Lily changed him and he became a better person. She wouldn't have loved him otherwise. He died to save his family. - Zeffira

26 Newt Scamander

ME and Newt both are magical creature lovers. HE IS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER FROM FANTASTIC BEASTS! - QueenThorn

He's absolutely adorable!

We have had too many extrovert male leads, I agree. Newton seems like such an amazing character that would just need more getting to know. Hufflepuffs don't seem to get a lot of love and I honestly think Newt deserves the love. He did cause quite a bit of disaster, but he did of course put in plenty of effort to fix the problem(s) he caused. His history in Hogwarts really shows what a great person he is, displays his kindness, his selflessness he displayed which resulted in his sentence for expulsion when he took the blame for Leta Lestrange's experiment that risked another student's life (The experiment involved a Jarvey). He really suits the Hufflepuff label he carries around. I see him as especially an amazing inspiration for others to do what they love as he did, despite it disappointing his family. He is the wizard form of Steve Irwin, doing what he loves.

He should not be included on this list. Fantastic Beasts should be separate in my opinion. - Ravenclaw

27 Cho Chang

She was kinda annoying but misunderstood by Harry and readers I think. Anyway, glad Harry didn't end up with her! - Zeffira

From the beginning, I knew she wasn't going to end up with Harry. All of a sudden she just popped up in the fourth book, practically out of nowhere. She seemed really nice, but she took Cedric's death way too dramatically. Harry was not going to end up with someone who cries over their last boyfriends death every damn second of her life.

Cho didn't get Dumbledore's Army caught. In the book, it was her friend and all Cho did then was stick up for her best mate. Though yeah, she is kinda sappy in the fifth.

I like Cho. I liked her in the whole fourth book, even though she didn't go with Harry to the Yule Ball. But in the fifth book, she started going crazy. She went on a date with Harry and sobbed about Cedric?! Oh come on. Who normal does that!?

28 Rufus Scrimgeour

He's played by Bill Nighy, so he deserves to be high on the list. - girlcool

Well he did die protecting Harry - Potterhead

Man he is the minister for magic!

Meet the new boss, Same as the old boss.

29 Petunia Dursley

I feel bad for her. Have any of you read the books? Her sister got picked for Hogwarts and her parents felt so proud then she was jealous and neglected.

Yeah she isn't that bad - AshleyChang

I guess when they finally clicked in book 5 people started liking her

Why is she on this list?!?

30 Peter Pettigrew Peter Pettigrew

He don't deserve my attention. he's a rat boy - HarryPotterForeveR

Traitors don’t deserve my affection - Potterhead

He should be way higher. He's a bad person but a good villain. - Ravenclaw

He should be killed

31 Aberforth Dumbledore Aberforth Dumbledore

People don't see Aberforth Dumbledore as a very god character. In my opinion, he's pretty cool. I mean, think about it. He was the younger sibling of a wizarding hero - Albus Dumbledore - someone who was in the WIzengamot, the guy who defeated Grindelwald, who was one of the greatest Hogwarts Headmasters of all time! He was completely ignored. And think about the times we've seen him fight, he was probably pretty talented as well.

Also, his relationship with his little sister, Ariana, whose mind, magic (and body? ) were ruined. He was very sweet and she obviously liked him better. I'm not saying that Dumbledore didn't love her, just that Aberforth was more...there.

32 Gellert Grindelwald

My favorite character by far. Remember when he was against 20 aurors all at the same time and just decided he was going to spend the day wrecking all of them. This guy is the definition of a tactical badass and is number one in my books. How the bloody hell ( we Canadians don't say that a lot) I'd cho Chang higher

I HATE HIM - QueenThorn

He did show remorse at the end of his life - lying to Voldemort about where the Elder Wand was located under the threat of death and insulting Voldemort at the same time. Definitely a awful person, but not on the evil level of Voldemort.

"Kill me then, Voldemort, I welcome death! But my death will not bring you what you seek... There is so much you do not understand..." (Grindelwald immediately before Voldemort kills him).

Gellert grindelwald is the most powerful dark wizard of all time second only to you-know-who himself. So yeah my point is that he is freakishly awesome and he should be in the top tens not 20s

33 Percy Weasley

While I do think that he's rather pompous and tend to act like a know-it-all, he is one of the most 'human' characters in the series. Just like any human being, he has many flaws and those flaws had unfortunately made him become oblivious to the corrupted world around him.

I do agree that Percy leaving his family in Order of the Phoenix and insulting them was rather a cocky thing to do. But if you were to look at it in his perspective, he just wanted his family to be proud of him at getting promoted but all he got was,"oh, you're just getting promoted because the Ministry are using you to spy on us". Just imagine how he had felt when he got told like that!

In the end, he was brave enough to do what most of us cannot do-- he apologised to his family. Acknowledging that you have done something wrong is hard, but it is even harder to apologise to the people you had been wronged to.

He should be much, much higher than #165. He is really ambitious and will put his own needs first, but he develops more than a vast majority of the characters in the series. He is my second favorite Weasley after Molly. - Ravenclaw

So snobbish and way to bossy and so full of himself

Least favorite character in Harry Potter series... - Tia-Harribel

34 Tom Riddle

He's the same a voldemort keep them the same

He's voldemort... - Pebblepaw

I think this option means Voldemort's dad: Tom Riddle Senior. - Ravenclaw

Tom riddle is the same thing as voldemort

35 Gregory Goyle

My FAVORITE character! he is AWESOME and saves Dumbledore's life.

He should be lower than 101... he is a terrible character. Crabbe is better than him. Goyle is just a moron who does nothing but follow Draco. He's not even a good villain. - Ravenclaw

36 Fleur Delacour Fleur Delacour

How is she AFTER Voldemort - GinnyWeasleyLuna

Oh I love Fleur! Ar first she seems like this beautiful snobby girl but then when she fiercely claimed she will remain at her fiance side no matter what he looks like, I changed my mind about her. So did Molly. - Zeffira

I was fully expecting Fleur to be in the top 30. She is my 5th or 6th favorite in the series and she is the most underrated character of anyone. Her arc in the final two books is amazing. She proves Ginny wrong, and Ginny is shown to be jealous of her and judges her by her looks. She still loves Bill even after he becomes a werewolf and she proves to Molly that she has more depth than just her beauty. Amazing character that is far too low on the list.

What?! Fleur should be higher than this, she is better than Grindelwald and pettigrew for gods sake - Annabel154

37 Kingsley Shacklebolt

Kingsley shacklebolt is the best!

Kingsley is a top 10 character! I love him!

He is just amazing!

He’s so badass. Come on he should be in too 25 at least. He fought off a WHOLE group of snatches. - Annabel154

38 Rowena Ravenclaw

Ravenclaws forever! - ArianaMarvelHPVine456

Ravenclaw is the best! Currently this is the highest house founder of the list! #Ravenclaw4Life - Potterhead

The best founder. Ravenclaws! - Annabel154

Ravenclaw is the best of the four!

39 Viktor Krum

I actually liked Viktor. I mean, although he is more of a physical being, in the last book he actually showed that he loved Hermione.

Krum krum krum! Victor krum! Think rons in love

He is a dummy and so arrogant the way he talks is annoying

He is a bloody pumpkin.. He stole hermonie from ron

40 Katie Bell

I'm sorry but Katie Bell has no business being at #26.. She didn't contribute much to the series, and she was usually just mentioned during Quidditch games/practices. - Ravenclaw

She was also attacked by the cursed necklace but so was a little more important in the half blood prince, but yes she was a very background character - Potterhead

Exactly. Buckbeak is lower and cedric did more and they are below her.

41 Arthur Weasley Arthur Weasley

How the heck is he only #50. He is in the #5 in my list - Potterhead

How come he is so low on this list he helped take care of harry when his aunt and uncle would not. Arthur Weasley survived three bites form a giant snake. He should be top ten.

42 Gilderoy Lockhart

He's so fake and full of himself, it's funny!

Definitely the funniest character of all the books! And I know someone just like him... "Magical Me" - can't beat it!

Gilderoy thinks he can do anything. He's cool because he's so dumb. But I hate the fact that he thinks his rewards (that he didn't even deserve) are better than Harry's great accomplishments for which he never even sought credit. But, I think he should have more votes. He's a well-written character, even though he's so dumb.

Fraud! He thinks his Charming Smile Award was better than Harry's defeating of Lord Voldemort!

43 Scorpius Malfoy Scorpius Malfoy

I feel like CRYING! How is Scorpius number 43? He is my favourite character and he is a kind, caring person!

He's so cute I wish he was my kiddo - HarryPotterForeveR

He is basically my favourite character in the whole series! The cursed child wouldn't have been bearable without him and his friendship with Albus. please make him higher on the list people!

After Luna Lovegood, Scorpius is my favorite character. He shows bravery and forgiveness for a friend who ditched him. I loved the cursed child book not for its plot, but for the characters in it. He overcomes stereotypes and I think he is highly underrated. Also, he brings a lot of comic relief.

44 The Sorting Hat

The Sorting Hat is a character! > : ( - Pokemonfan10

This is not a character - Potterhead111

I love him Gryfndoor slythirin huplepuff Ravenclaw

45 Argus Filch

Oh dear... We are in trouble...

Funny when he ate the fever fudge he thought was from Umbrige - SlytherinGirl

"Student! Students in the corridors! ”

“They’re meant to be in the corridor you blithering idiot”

😂😂 - Potterhead111

46 Buckbeak

The 'main trio' (Harry, Ron, Hermione) is still good, but Buckbeak is definitely my favorite character. They did both the look and personality of an eagle-horse hybrid perfectly.

From Prisoner of Azkaban He is awesome ABSOULUTELY Brilliant

I love buckbeak! He is so cute and sweet!

Buck beak is so cute he is like an eagle with a horse that what he is I love buck beak he is so nice and I am so glad the Harry and hermione rescued him!

47 Dementor

Umbridge was one of the peeps who kissed one (fight me non-shippers! )

Everyone without a soul (means they kiss stupid people) kissed dementors. They kiss stupid people, no soul

Funny how a dementer is higher than so many other living charcteres lol - Potterhead

I think their cool and all, but just disgusting. They clamp their jaws on a victims mouth and suck the soul out is the victim. Just disgusting.

48 Sir Cadogan

Lol he was funny - Potterhead

He is a person in a painting. READ THE BOOKS.

49 Quirinus Quirrell

Really... he should be higher. He's not a good person but he's a pretty good character who deserves higher than #233 - Ravenclaw

Quirinus should be at the bottom he was a secret agent for "Who must not be named."

Other people were secretly working for voldemort and are higher. For example Peter Pettigrew - Potterhead

He is a phoney

50 Lucius Malfoy

What’s funny is a thestral made it above Lucius. Come on he should be higher! - Potterhead

I like him because he can be many things but at the end he chooses his family over everything else

He's the best character. He should be at the top. Why is he in 238th place? - Consequently

He looks like the drummer in Nirvana.
