High school is a hard time. Corgan really helped a lot of teens find themselves in the hardest time of their lives. His lyrics are so condensed but yet so powerful. Billy Corgan Is one of the greatest lyricists of all timeV 1 Comment
The single best lyricist of all time, hands down.
Absolute genius! Lyrics flow in a incredibly unique way, songs like 'Brother, my cup is empty', 'Red right hand', and 'Straight to you' show is prowess as a poet, not just as a musician. His lyrics are honest and personal, but also non-repetative so it feels like he is telling you a story each time you here him. Massively underrated in my opinion. Should be in the top 10 easily.
Just listen to the whole 'Murder Ballads'-Album - stories almost equal to E.A. poe. And some of his ballads like 'Straight to you' or 'Into my arms' contain words of incredible beauty. "And I don't believe in the existence of angels, but looking at you I wonder if that's true. But if I did I would summon them together and ask them to watch over you...".
Oh I also forgot to mention that his latest album Skeleton Tree is one of the most if not the most critically acclaimed albums of this year.
Craasszzzy! This man's in the top 10 to 20 easy. Novelist, poet, songwriter, and screen writer. He's so beyond most of these people I'm ashamed to even have to put this down. Wow I'm living in bizzaro world.V 3 Comments
Well at least she beat Jay-Z. I guess the world has not yet come to an end. Were it l deciding, the top male lyricist - Pete Townsend; the best female - Kate Bush. Why seperate them gender wise? Because men and women are different. Or hadn't you noticed?
The difference between a lyricist and a poet is embodied in Finn
Niel is one the most under-rated lyricists/ songwriters alive today!V 1 Comment
When this guy breaks through in 2013 you are going to have to re-write the list and redefine the parameters of genius... In fact he makes the word genius redundant at most and common at least. The complexity of his observations can be both bewildering and yet awe inspiring both at the same time... And many many more.
Thanks for posting this guy up. I Googled his website and it has the words to about 100 songs. Absolutely brilliant and certainly gives the others on here a run for their money
Count me in, Gareths capacity to involve so many diverse situations and emotions with an unequalled pen is nothing short of phenomonal.V 1 Comment
As a lyricist only... You'd think he'd be higher up. I'd put him in the top 25. Daniel, Rocket Man, Tiny Dancer, Yellow Brick Road, All the Young Girls Love Alice, Harmony, Blues for Bobby and Me. I've Seen That Movie Too, Your Song, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Take Me To the Pilot, Bennie and the Jets
... Man... The list goes on and on.
Bernie Taupin is vastly underrated in this pole! No, I don't think he is the best by a long shot, but he certainly should rank in the top 25. Just my opinion.
He's the best lyricist I can think of!
Oh my goodness! 110! No, No, NO - more like #10
This is meant to be a list of the greatest lyricists. There are many, many song writers who deserve to be way above Shane when it comes to composing songs. But when it comes down to purely writing lyrics there are not many people above him and there never have been. He is easily one of the top ten lyrics writers of all time. For me top 3. I just despair when I see some of the names ahead of him on this list. It seems people are just voting for their favourite artists instead of being objective. MacGowan should be mentioned in the same breath as the best lyric writers and poets of all time. In the popular music world he should be up there with Dylan in terms of lyrics. The only difference being maybe that his output has been undoubtedly tempered by his lifestyle - but he should, and never will be, forgotten. His songs really stopped at his peak and he never really did anything all that bad. Many other lyricists outstayed their welcome and pushed well into the bounds of mediocrity. He ...more
'A pair of brown eyes' is the closest link between a song and a poem I think I have ever heard, just think of the imagery he creates with those words. Any MacGowan-penned song of the first 3 pogues albums has such unique lyrics that no other person could replicate. Yes he's not the best singer and yes he's now a mumbling shadow of his former self, but at the peak of his genius when the words would simply come pouring out of him, I believe he was among the best of his generation.
How can he be not into the Top Ten?

Love, It's an ideal of the person you imitated
I'm a huge Ozzy Osbourne fan, but I don't think he writes his own lyrics. I'm sure he may have been able to write lyrics before the drugs... But now, after all the stuff he did, I don't think so... But one thing I noticed is that when ever he sings you can understand him BETTER than when he's talking, it's pretty amazing.
Ozzy did not, does not and cannot write lyrics
We wrote pretty good songs and that too extremely meaning full songs like seize the day and many other nightmare etc beast and the harlot, buried alive, scream and many other he really deserves a place in the list

T.I. is great lyricist because of why he helps people understand him, but at the same time helping other people with their life.T.I. really touched the world with his beautiful lyrics. King of the South!
T.I. is like the new "Tupac". He is and will always be for the people and the community. His music inspires me to be a better person than what I am, and can accomplish anything in the world.T.I. is King.
Really? Taylor Swift above this legend? I can't even believe they have the same birthday, Tom is so much better than a stupid blonde drama queen that writes about girl and boyfriend drama. Tom isn't a stupid guy that writes about money and clubs and girls twerking and having girls twerk in his music videos like Lil Wayne. He is good at writing joke songs, he makes them clever and funny. And his meaningful songs are masterpieces. He is known to be the best lyricist in Blink-182. He can write all kinds of stuff, he is very good at writing in general, not just songwriting. - AnimeDrawer
He has proven he can have a sense of humour with his early blink stuff. Yet he can have a deep and meaningful side with Angels & Airwaves, and some of his later blink stuff. - Clamey

"It's never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder"
"Moving with grace the men despise
And women have learned to lose"
"A heart that beats as both siphon and reservoir. "
"Just like the ocean, always in love with the moon. It's overflowing now, inside you. "
Perhaps the most underrated and unknown songwriter ever he wrote the he wrote "little red rooster", "hoochie coochie man", "spoonful", and almost half of all led zepplins first two albumsV 1 Comment
Layne Staley should be number 1, have you listened to Alice in Chains?
