Top 10 Best Lyricists of All Time

The Contenders: Page 6

101 Nick Cave

Absolute genius! Lyrics flow in a incredibly unique way, songs like 'Brother, my cup is empty', 'Red right hand', and 'Straight to you' show is prowess as a poet, not just as a musician. His lyrics are honest and personal, but also non-repetative so it feels like he is telling you a story each time you here him. Massively underrated in my opinion. Should be in the top 10 easily.

Just listen to the whole 'Murder Ballads'-Album - stories almost equal to E.A. poe. And some of his ballads like 'Straight to you' or 'Into my arms' contain words of incredible beauty. "And I don't believe in the existence of angels, but looking at you I wonder if that's true. But if I did I would summon them together and ask them to watch over you...".

Oh I also forgot to mention that his latest album Skeleton Tree is one of the most if not the most critically acclaimed albums of this year.

Craasszzzy! This man's in the top 10 to 20 easy. Novelist, poet, songwriter, and screen writer. He's so beyond most of these people I'm ashamed to even have to put this down. Wow I'm living in bizzaro world.

102 Robert Hunter

Hunter has written some of the deepest, most meaningful pieces I have come across. The man has an outstanding ability of conveying the feeling of the songs, simply through written form, like I have never seen before. With simple, unpretentious vocabulary he goes a long way, much like the great Ernest Hemingway. Known for his work with the Grateful Dead, there's a reason for also having collaborated with current #1 on this list - Bob Dylan.

The Grateful Dead's lyricist. The man who wrote Ripple, need I say more?

Shake the hand that shook the hand of PT Barnum and Charlie Chan.

The difference between a lyricist and a poet is embodied in Finn

105 Gareth Balch

When this guy breaks through in 2013 you are going to have to re-write the list and redefine the parameters of genius... In fact he makes the word genius redundant at most and common at least. The complexity of his observations can be both bewildering and yet awe inspiring both at the same time... And many many more.

Thanks for posting this guy up. I Googled his website and it has the words to about 100 songs. Absolutely brilliant and certainly gives the others on here a run for their money

Count me in, Gareths capacity to involve so many diverse situations and emotions with an unequalled pen is nothing short of phenomonal.

106 Bernie Taupin

As a lyricist only... You'd think he'd be higher up. I'd put him in the top 25. Daniel, Rocket Man, Tiny Dancer, Yellow Brick Road, All the Young Girls Love Alice, Harmony, Blues for Bobby and Me. I've Seen That Movie Too, Your Song, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Take Me To the Pilot, Bennie and the Jets
... Man... The list goes on and on.

Bernie Taupin is vastly underrated in this pole! No, I don't think he is the best by a long shot, but he certainly should rank in the top 25. Just my opinion.

He's the best lyricist I can think of!

Oh my goodness! 110! No, No, NO - more like #10

111 Kate Bush Kate Bush

Well at least she beat Jay-Z. I guess the world has not yet come to an end. Were it l deciding, the top male lyricist - Pete Townsend; the best female - Kate Bush. Why seperate them gender wise? Because men and women are different. Or hadn't you noticed?

112 Ozzy Osbourne Ozzy Osbourne John Michael "Ozzy" Osbourne was born on December 3, 1948. He is also known as ''The Prince of Darkness''. Ozzy is an English singer, songwriter, and television personality. He rose to prominence in the early 1970s as the lead vocalist of the band Black Sabbath. Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath more.

I'm a huge Ozzy Osbourne fan, but I don't think he writes his own lyrics. I'm sure he may have been able to write lyrics before the drugs... But now, after all the stuff he did, I don't think so... But one thing I noticed is that when ever he sings you can understand him BETTER than when he's talking, it's pretty amazing.

Ozzy did not, does not and cannot write lyrics

113 M. Shadows M. Shadows Matthew Charles Sanders, better known by his stage name M. Shadows, is an American musician, best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter and founding member of the American heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold.

Most intelligent word play and rhyme schemes in the game

DOOM is below JB? This list is a complete joke. DOOM should be in top 5 lyricists of all time. His wordplay and rhyme schemes are off the charts.
