The single best lyricist of all time, hands down.

104 Kate Bush Kate Bush

Well at least she beat Jay-Z. I guess the world has not yet come to an end. Were it l deciding, the top male lyricist - Pete Townsend; the best female - Kate Bush. Why seperate them gender wise? Because men and women are different. Or hadn't you noticed?

107 Tom DeLonge Tom DeLonge Thomas Matthew "Tom" DeLonge, Jr., is an American musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and film producer. He was born in Poway, California on December 13, 1975 . When he was in high school at age 15, he got expelled for drinking at a basketball game . He also used to play the more.

Really? Taylor Swift above this legend? I can't even believe they have the same birthday, Tom is so much better than a stupid blonde drama queen that writes about girl and boyfriend drama. Tom isn't a stupid guy that writes about money and clubs and girls twerking and having girls twerk in his music videos like Lil Wayne. He is good at writing joke songs, he makes them clever and funny. And his meaningful songs are masterpieces. He is known to be the best lyricist in Blink-182. He can write all kinds of stuff, he is very good at writing in general, not just songwriting. - AnimeDrawer

He has proven he can have a sense of humour with his early blink stuff. Yet he can have a deep and meaningful side with Angels & Airwaves, and some of his later blink stuff. - Clamey

Best lyricist in the 21st century. - AnimeDrawer

108 Gareth Balch

When this guy breaks through in 2013 you are going to have to re-write the list and redefine the parameters of genius... In fact he makes the word genius redundant at most and common at least. The complexity of his observations can be both bewildering and yet awe inspiring both at the same time... And many many more.

Thanks for posting this guy up. I Googled his website and it has the words to about 100 songs. Absolutely brilliant and certainly gives the others on here a run for their money

Count me in, Gareths capacity to involve so many diverse situations and emotions with an unequalled pen is nothing short of phenomonal.

109 Bernie Taupin

As a lyricist only... You'd think he'd be higher up. I'd put him in the top 25. Daniel, Rocket Man, Tiny Dancer, Yellow Brick Road, All the Young Girls Love Alice, Harmony, Blues for Bobby and Me. I've Seen That Movie Too, Your Song, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Take Me To the Pilot, Bennie and the Jets
... Man... The list goes on and on.

Bernie Taupin is vastly underrated in this pole! No, I don't think he is the best by a long shot, but he certainly should rank in the top 25. Just my opinion.

He's the best lyricist I can think of!

Top 10 for sure..!

110 Shane MacGowan

This is meant to be a list of the greatest lyricists. There are many, many song writers who deserve to be way above Shane when it comes to composing songs. But when it comes down to purely writing lyrics there are not many people above him and there never have been. He is easily one of the top ten lyrics writers of all time. For me top 3. I just despair when I see some of the names ahead of him on this list. It seems people are just voting for their favourite artists instead of being objective. MacGowan should be mentioned in the same breath as the best lyric writers and poets of all time. In the popular music world he should be up there with Dylan in terms of lyrics. The only difference being maybe that his output has been undoubtedly tempered by his lifestyle - but he should, and never will be, forgotten. His songs really stopped at his peak and he never really did anything all that bad. Many other lyricists outstayed their welcome and pushed well into the bounds of mediocrity. He ...more

'A pair of brown eyes' is the closest link between a song and a poem I think I have ever heard, just think of the imagery he creates with those words. Any MacGowan-penned song of the first 3 pogues albums has such unique lyrics that no other person could replicate. Yes he's not the best singer and yes he's now a mumbling shadow of his former self, but at the peak of his genius when the words would simply come pouring out of him, I believe he was among the best of his generation.

How can he be not into the Top Ten?

111 Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan Jimmy James Owen Sullivan (February 9th, 1981 - December 28th 2009), better known by his stage name "The Rev" (Short for "The Reverend Tholomew Plague") was an American musician, singer and songwriter, best known as the former drummer, backing vocalist and co-founder of the American heavy metal band Avenged more.

116 Ozzy Osbourne Ozzy Osbourne John Michael "Ozzy" Osbourne was born on December 3, 1948. He is also known as ''The Prince of Darkness''. Ozzy is an English singer, songwriter, and television personality. He rose to prominence in the early 1970s as the lead vocalist of the band Black Sabbath. Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath more.

I'm a huge Ozzy Osbourne fan, but I don't think he writes his own lyrics. I'm sure he may have been able to write lyrics before the drugs... But now, after all the stuff he did, I don't think so... But one thing I noticed is that when ever he sings you can understand him BETTER than when he's talking, it's pretty amazing.

Ozzy did not, does not and cannot write lyrics

117 M. Shadows M. Shadows Matthew Charles Sanders, better known by his stage name M. Shadows, is an American musician, best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter and founding member of the American heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold.
