30 Years...

Brobusky When a man lies he murders some part of the world
These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives
All this I cannot bear to witness any longer
Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home
- Cliff Burton, 1986.

30 years...30 whole years. It seems like not to long ago (though I wasn't alive to witness it), that Clifford Lee Burton died in a horrible bus accident in Ljungby, Sweden...

Today exactly marks the 30 year anniversary of Cliff Burton's death. Cliff was, is, and will always be my number one pick for best bassist of all time. There's a reason he sits at number one on the list of best metal bassists. He was not only a great bassist, but a musical genius. From Metallica's early work on Kill 'Em All to their thrashterpiece Master of Puppets, Cliff's presence was always there. Even on 1988's...And Justice For All, he still had vocals on one of the songs, a year after his death! (Those lyrics being the one's at the top of the page.) While I respect and recognize how both Jason Newsted and Robert Trujillo and phenomenal bassists in their own right, Cliff was...something else. How he could take his bass and make it sound almost like a third guitar of sorts on some of their songs. From his amazing bass solo Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth), to the epic bass intro on For Whom the Bell Tolls, to the 8 minute long masterpiece Orion, Cliff never stopped with how far he could take his bass playing. And it is because he sadly died at the extremely young age of 24, that we would never get to hear how far he would take the band in terms of progressive epicness. Even on songs he did not fully write, like Creeping Death, it was him who had the idea for the song. Some people might think of Cliff as 'just another bassist', but he was much, MUCH, more than that. Any live Metallica show from 1982 - 1986 wasn't complete without one of his crazy bass solos. And while we may not get to hear him live again, let us not let him be forgotten, in honor of one of the greatest musicians ever to walk the planet.
