Best Movies of 2013

The Top Ten
1 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Product Image

Seriously? While I do think there are good things about this film, it is not great at all, especially since all the problems from the first film have not only not been fixed, but have either remained or worsened. The acting from the main leads is still wooden, the social commentary is still painfully obvious and badly done, the characters are under developed and a rather poor Hunger Games. However, the great acting from the supporting cast, the strong production values and a really neat twist at the end elevate a rather poor film to an average one. So while not bad, this is nowhere near the best film of 2013.

This movie was amazing! Though I was a little disappointed about Bony getting cut out... I actually like the Catching Fire movie more then the book and more then the Hunger Games Movie! The book droned on but the movie was suspenseful and thrilling. The director did a great job!

Catching Fire followed the story-line of the book than The Hunger Games. A few parts were left out (such as the training scores and when Bonnie and Twill tell Katniss about district 13 and uprisings in district 8). The movie should be number 1 and I give it 5 stars!

This is gonna be a great action movie to see. I didn't see it but I know that this movie is going to be great because of the suspense and explosions. I know for sure this has to be one of the best movies in 2013. Katniss everdeem is a great character in this film. Awesome movie!

2 Despicable Me 2 Despicable Me 2 Product Image

This movie is superb, underrated, astonishing, and just amazing as a whole. Why this was #1 in that new 'most overrated animated movies of the 2010s' list is beyond me, and I hope the list's creator gets depression because this film is not the least overrated. Hell, I'm astounded to see that this is the highest ranked animated film here when I know that there were plenty of other more liked animated films made in it's year. There were no unlikeable characters, the humour and plot were great and complemented each other well, and overall I'd say this can be enjoyed by all ages and not just kids. I was 14 when I watched it and I loved it then, 4 years later and I still love it today. Sadly I only watched once back when I saw it back then, but ever since I have always wanted to rewarch it. It's just that good, and I wished more people appreciated it.

I agree. This movie was extreemly good. I would have watched it on a normal basis if it wasn't for the fact that my little brother and sister are the types of kids who watch movies and they never get old or redundant. It got on my nerves when I came downstairs into the living room and realized that they were watching the movie. AGAIN. but again I do think it's a good movie though, I'm not hating on it.

This is one of the best movies ever made. The minions are very adorable and have a cute little language. I agree that this movie is better than the firs one and that the purple minions also make me laugh as well. Lucy and Gru are so good together and Agnes is the most adorable cutie pie ever. This movie I think is in the right place 3rd place.

This deserves to be in number 1 or number 2. VERY FUNNY movie. VERY VERY nice storyline and very diverse audience target. It can be enjoyed by kids, teenagers and adults and even oldies can appreciate the movie.

3 Iron Man 3 Iron Man 3 Product Image

Bigger, better, funnier and yet the darkest of all three Iron Man movies. The acting is top notch, especially from Robert Downey Jr who brings his A game for this explosive finale. The action scenes are brilliantly well-crafted and the soundtrack is great. Even when the action isn't present there's a lot to enjoy in Iron Man 3.

Striking a unique balance between a strong character piece and a stylish action thriller; Shane Black and Robert Downey Jr. Push the bounds of how superhero stories are told, even with a somewhat clashing of light and dark tones and a twist that works, but is none the less very jarring.

Iron Man 3: Great Action, really funny
Man of Steel: Meh. Kinda played out like a dragon ball z movie or something
Hunger Games 2: Awesome. I love the scene where Katniss shoots an arrow at the shield dome.
World War Z: I really want to watch
Pacific Rim: Cool alien robot smash-up.
Gravity: Pretty good.

Great movie! I personally liked it better than the others. This movie more of those funny moments, and I thought the third iron man movie was a little kid friendly than one and two. (No, I'm not talking five year old friendly, I'm talking more friendly for 12-14 year olds.P.S. I love Robert downy jr.

4 Gravity Gravity Product Image

This 'Film' is terrible. There is virtually NO STORY whatsoever! In fact, I will summarise the story in one sentence:

Ryan (the main character) goes into space because she mourns the death of her daughter (who apparently slipped whilst playing tag -_-) along with George Clooney, who dies after the ship is hit by space debris, which means that Ryan must drift to the Chinese station (which somehow also manages to cross the path of the same debris) and crash land into a convenient lake. THAT is basically the entire story, apart from a pointless dream in which George Clooney posthumously reappears. Granted, the graphics are great, but graphics don't make a film.

The last time a notable wide-released, live-action film was rated 97% or higher on rotten tomatoes was in 1997 when L.A. confidential came out. It is also the first film since Inception to get a spot in IMDB's top 50. This is definitely 2013's best film.

Iron man 3, although a great movie, wasn't even the best movie when it came out.

Captain Phillips should be in the top five. It would have been the my favorite film of the year if Gravity didn't exist.

I'm here to point out that everything above this is tainted with the wretched stink of commercialism. Superheros and milked plots, knock-offs of literature, and generally bad movies are the things our society has been bred to appreciate. While there have been many better movies than this, it at least deserved to be above the washed-up plotless action flicks created only o rake in money from the masses.

How is IRON MAN 3 Number 1? I'm sorry, that film was a huge disappointment. This movie however, is a classic, and will remain one. I mean, it is a visual feast, the acting is awesome, and it has a great storyline. Captain Phillips needs to be high on this list as well. Iron Man 3 does not belong anywhere near top thirty, let alone top ten.

5 Man of Steel Man of Steel Product Image

Absolutely amazingly epic and immensely entertaining. When it comes to such an iconic and loved character it's hard to please everyone. But oh boy, this is the one I've been waiting for! Where do I even start? Visually stunning and full of carnage. Krypton is depicted beautifully. Loved the tone and pacing of the film. The soundtrack is definitely one of Hans Zimmer's best, it's incredible. Superbly crafted action sequences and spectacle. A joy to watch from start to finish. It has become a favorite and will be viewed many times to come. Also, Faora in Man of Steel is undoubtedly one of the best female villains. All in all, it's a super exciting and intense movie with excellent performances and is surely amongst the top of the best superhero and action movies.

I honestly don't get comic book fans sometimes. To me, this was far and away the best Superman film. Two things that really shined in this film were the Kryptonians and that I finally got to see what I've always wanted: a giant slugfest across the city. People keep complaining about that aspect, and I just don't get it. The last 45 minutes of this movie was just one big fight scene? So was the Avengers, and who complained about that? But the way they did the entrance of the Kryptonians was the best part of the film to me. They made it feel like a real alien invasion. They felt alien, even though they look exactly like us. The sci fi part of this film was captured really well. Like I said, I don't know what people really want with Superman. From what I've gathered, they seem to want a rehash of Superman Returns, which was as boring as it gets for a super hero movie.

The old movies except 3 and 4 were good but were too corny even though it's done in a comic book style. This one is better than all of them except the first movie. This one took Kryptons destruction more tragically. And Zod is actually more relatable than the old Zod. So I like this film, but the part where he lets people die was bad. But still I like it.

Man of Steel was purely epic. I was expecting it to be cheesy with stupid jokes, but it was none of that. Amazing fights between Zod and Superman, destruction, and much more. Iron Man 3 should not be #2 let alone top 5. It didn't follow the comics, and the movie itself wasn't that great.

6 The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Product Image

I'll be honest here: This is my favorite Lord of the Rings movie yet. The plot was the most captivating of the five, as well as it having the most memorable soundtrack to me (and I have a hard time paying attention to movie soundtracks) as well as some of the most developed characters. All in all, if you enjoyed the other films in the series, you'll love this one.

It came out in the quite end of the year, but the best movie of 2013. liked it even more than the previous one, even though I couldn't imagine that'd be possible. I can't believe it hasn't even fit in not in the top 5, but the top 10 either! Shame on you people! This one can't even be mentioned on one page with The Hunger Games...

One of the best of 2013 for sure. It worked both as a prequel & a standalone film, and in a rare move can build tension despite knowing the fates of the characters in future instalments. Otherwise, it's still fantastic, with an epic scope, well written characters, great action & story, this is one of 2013's best and one of the best film prequels of all time.

They used to say that perfection can't be improved, then this movie came and pretty much shown 'em that wasn't quite accurate! Every aspect of this movie bring out the magic in its true essence.. Definitely the best movie of 2013.. and undoubtedly one of the best movies of all time...

7 Fast & Furious 6 Fast & Furious 6 Product Image

One of the best of the year! Insanely fun and entertaining with amazing action and humor. Extremely well-filmed and directed. Luke Evans was a great and menacing villain. Loved every single minute of it and will surely watch it over and over again. "THEY GOT A TANK! "

Best sequel of the year. Only one to get you pumped up for the next one. The FF family is almost all-together now. We just need Sean and Bow Wow to meet up with the gang in the next (and last) one.

Um guys, I think, no no wait I know that when your trying to comment abput hunger games not being out means that you're actually voting. Any way, my top 5 reasons why this movie is awesome

1. The way it ties together with the other movies in the series (the story of han).
2. Action scenes are awesome
3. The Rock and vin diesel are total badasses
4. It's got a slice of comedy

Amazing movie! I recommend that everyone should go see this movie, just get a little background on the series first and then you will understand how awesome this one was

8 Monsters University Monsters University Product Image

Pixar has yet to disappoint me!

This prequel was superb! It really builds up the background for Monsters Inc. So many questions that I had from the first movie were answered in this.

Great visuals, voice acting, and plot; it wasn't at all cheesy or predictable. A perfect movie for the family and kids, or even the occasional reminiscing teen

One of my favourites movies of ALL TIME let alone 2013! This movie deserves to be at a higher standing point. It's one of those movies you can really relate to and enjoy, no matter your age. My 60 year old Grandma loved this movie, my 7 year old sister loved this movie, and I'm 20 and I loved this movie. I can watch it over and over and over without ever being bored. It makes me laugh every time!

I loved how it kept the spirit and humor style of the original along with adding in the college theme and adding in plenty of Easter eggs and explanations for diehard fans, along with still being a good moving and not feeling like a load of exposition.

Someone told me this wasn't funny so when I watched this I think she has a problem with her brain. This is awesome! I used to collect DVD's of my favorite childhood movies and now I had this as an addition.

9 The Wolf of Wall Street

This was a fantastic movie. People tend to overlook it because of its grotesquely realistic look into the life of high rolling Americans, but it was superbly written, directed, and cast. The fact that Leo was pushed aside for the Best Actor Oscar is still a tragedy. The depth, fun, and emotion displayed in this movie, enhanced by the unrivaled soundtrack. Scorsese brought us a wonderful and truly spectacular piece of film history and it is a shame that it is not recognized more widely as such.

A masterpiece! Brilliant performances and excellent direction. The Wolf of Wall Street is a stylish, darkly hilarious and explosively entertaining film. The soundtrack is terrific as well and fits like a glove. Endless streams of outstanding sequences and great dialogue. Can't wait to watch this amazing film again. Might be one of my favorite movies of all time now.

These lists are terrible.. Most movies above this are rubbish. People need to watch real movies not sum eye candy (pacific rim) this was a masterpiece along with Dallas buyers club. They are real movies.. Were the Miller's ahead of this is a joke. People don't know good acting anymore. Just go for big budget CGI crap.. This is a throwback to real acting and directing.

How is this rated 16th? If you haven't seen this movie, you need to go see it NOW! Even if you don't like the concept of the story, it is just a very well made movie and it deserves to be #1. It shows great acting, great directing and it's pretty funny too! I still can't believe that Leonardo DiCaprio didn't win an Oscar for this movie!

10 12 Years a Slave 12 Years a Slave Product Image

A most profound depiction of the American history; bold performances and script, gorgeous photography and elegant art direction aside, the film provides perhaps the most realistic depiction of slavery you can hope for.

How in the hell is this not top 10? I love iron man and man of steel as much as all of you, but those movies are fun. sometimes we need more than just fun we need movies that make us emotional with performances that move us and when we come out crying we know we have just seen a piece of art and that is what this movie is! ART!

Cinematic conscious people clearly don't vote on this site. Iron Man 3 number one and this not even top ten? That's just flat out disgraceful you all should be ashamed.

Wow, this masterpiece below the Mediocre double punches Man Of Steel and Iron Man 3 and the truly god awful Grown Ups 2. Who votes here 14 year olds?

The Contenders
11 Star Trek: Into Darkness Star Trek: Into Darkness Product Image

Star Trek Into Darkness has it all! Everything works perfectly. The acting is just as great as in the reboot and maybe even better. But the addition of Benedict Cumberbatch has added it to a whole new level. Incredible action scenes and awesome soundtrack. The entire film is just a visual marvel with heart and soul. A movie to watch from start to finish on multiple viewings.

Star Trek really got boosted on a new level, not comparable to the 20th century. It skips all what non-Trekkies made uninterested in the series and nevertheless it exceeds even the fans' expectations. Especially this movie makes the border between good and bad vanish. I never thought about story and character's motives so long as after seeing this movie in the theaters...

If you don't think this is the best movie of the year then you obviously haven't seen it. The fact that Man of Steel (Relentless action, Lois Lane always knows where Superman is, etc.) and Iron Man 3 (so many plot holes you couldn't fit a tooth pick through them) are higher than this is beyond me... I've lost faith in humanity..

Star Trek Into Darkness beats Star Trek 09 about lenghts, and that was allready awesome. I cannot remember any movie I watched that was as great as this.J.J. abrambs really did an amazing work. I just can hope that the series will be continued very soon.
Note: I wasn't Star-Trek-fan before the new movies, they made me!

12 The Wolverine The Wolverine Product Image

Simply amazing! Visually stunning, exciting, stylish and dark. The Wolverine at his best! Breathtaking action sequences (and there are plenty of them). Great story and pacing. Never a dull moment. Perfect direction and terrific acting. The dialogue is surprisingly very well done and they don't hold back on the action and violence. The soundtrack is awesome as well. Definitely one of the best films this year, can't wait to watch it again. The Wolverine fires on all cylinders!

Some good action sequences and as always a great performance out of Jackman but a generic, rushed love story with and an overly long middle sequence with a cartoonish finale leaves this film in tatters. There was potential here but overall it's basically a failure. 6/10.

Not the best X-Men movie but it had a great storyline and great special affects. X-Men origins wolverine has been the best one so far but when X-Men days of future past comes out, it will be a massive hit. CAN'T WAIT!

Fast 6 and conjuring are above this one? And even catching fire that haven't even released? You guys make me really laugh out loud! !

13 Pacific Rim Pacific Rim Product Image

A blockbuster masterpiece! Visually stunning and filled with astonishing action set-pieces. Extremely well-made and terrifically paced. I was thoroughly entertained and can watch it again and again. The soundtrack must be mentioned, it was amazing and just perfect. The chemistry between the characters works and the story is coherent. An epic thrill-ride of a movie that never ceased to amaze me. Love Pacific Rim!

Incredible art direction and spin on the giant monster movie. Best seen on a large screen... Some incredible visual effects and the acting was much better than most. They timed its release poorly would have done better if released in early August a few weeks after Despicable Me 2 as audiences have had a steady diet of actioners and superheroes all summer...waiting till just before school starts would have been a fiscally sound decision.

The giant fanbase and internet craze over this movie told me that this movie was something to watch. So I watched it. And it was ' awesome. Usually, movies with this theme have a poor storyline that falls apart in the first half. However, Pacific Rim managed to keep it, along with extreme action that makes you want to jump off your seat and start imitating the Gypsy.

Del Toro made this movie like a video game, Whether your opinion on that statement is +/-, To me it's a good thing. In the Bonus features, The Crew took time making this film, they even have an art book to prove it. The Kaiju (Monsters) were great, each having specific Cons and Pros, But the Jaegars (Robots) kinda got a beatdown, Except Gipsy Danger. Best movie I have seen! Pros: Great CGI, Orginality, Realistic Physics, Heavy Plot Cons: None (I'd like you to find one)

14 World War Z World War Z Product Image

Incredible movie! The most intense and exciting experience in a while. An absolute masterpiece of suspenseful entertainment. Loved everything about World War Z.
Excellent direction and great acting. Extremely well filmed, edited and paced. The soundtrack is terrific as well. An enthralling movie with substance. A definite favorite and I will surely watch it again and again. It's so damn great!

This is my favorite movie not only of the year, but also for Brad. He has really evolved from being big screen eye candy to a serious actor and this is one of his latest works to confirm it. It not only provides a new spin on the normal zombie fare, but also has a great message in how having courage and working together can help solve some of humanity's biggest problems.

I think there should be a sequel to it. That is how good this movie is. The sequel should be how they fight the plague bit by bit. They should also show where the plague had come from and who spread it.

What is awesomest then a zombie apocalypse movie that actually shows the beginning of an apocalypse with brad Pitt! Best zombie film and movie in 2013 ever!

15 The World's End The World's End Product Image

Not really the sort of movie I'd probably watch but I did watch it and it was great, it was funny and I a bit different, so this gets my vote.

Brilliant all around. Great characters, story, action & even some well written social commentary thrown in there for good measure. This for me is the best out of the Cornetto trilogy, simply because it is the most maturely written, and as such the drama & emotional stuff is the most authentic and works the best here.

Overindulgent trash like Wolf of Wall Street ahead of a Brit masterpiece like The World's End. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are comedy movie legends.

Underrated. Hilarious, great characters, epic action and more heart than you may expect. Certainly better than it's American counterpart, This Is The End

16 Captain Phillips Captain Phillips Product Image

Absolutely brilliant! Without a doubt one of the years best. Incredibly intense and exceptionally well-crafted. Excellent performances, especially from Tom Hanks giving one of his best portrayals in a while. The cinematography is terrific and the soundtrack is superb and captivating. Riveting from start to finish, and I will surely watch it many times to come. Exciting, suspenseful, entertaining and emotional. Captain Phillips will be a strong Oscar contender. Simply an amazing film.

The best movie I have seen in a long time. Definitely deseverses a high position rather than Iron Man 3 which was a terrible movie compared to others this year or even Iron Man 1. Captain Phillips was one of the greatest movies I have seen with awesome acting by Tom Hanks (as usual).

Explain something to me! How come iron man 3 is at number 2 and films like captain phillips and 12 years a slave are on 15th and 17th position? This world is full of stupid punks, I see! Disappointed of the choices you guys are making!

Let me start by saying iron man 3? Really? That I think was the worst movie of the franchise. you couldn't understand the story at all and all the comments say " cause the action scenes are cool." the action scenes were cool in star wars episode 1 but that was one of the worst movies made. we have an instant classic with captain phillips. tom hanks was superb. best movie this year. showed the lives of the men and the lives of the pirates side by side. a must see.

17 This Is the End This Is the End Product Image

I love this movie. Hilarious! The devil's dick get's chopped off. More funny than any other movie I've seen.

By far the most genuine and originally funny movie I've seen in a LONG time...

This movie is funny and scary one of the best movies I've seen in my life.

Funniest movie I have ever seen in my whole entire life! LMFAO the whole time

18 The Conjuring The Conjuring Product Image

Seriously, this movie should be definitely included in the top ten. I mean I love a couple of movies that are listed here, but this movie was what really struck me that it changed my outlook in life...and made me piss my pants and kept me up all night. It's a great horror movie not only because of the effects that would definitely make you crap bricks, but because it is based on a true story, which made it even a lot creepier.

I am a horror movie buff, and almost never scared, but this. movie. scared. me. It is so well done, well casted, well scripted, and SO creepy! I just got an icky feeling, that feeling that makes you sleep with the lights on, but still whispers to you that the light won't save you. The use of the hide and clap game is genius, if anyone ever really wanted to scare the daylights out of me, that is all they would have to do. I think this movie is an icon in the making. This will go down as one of the best horror films ever made.

The Conjuring. The movie that made me piss my own pants. If anyone is looking for a REALLY good horror movie that is better than Paranormal Activity, give this movie a try. It will surely keep you on the edge of your seats

The best and scariest movie I had ever watched in my life. Even though I had watch it about two months ago, I still feel scary when I think about it like suddenly your leg is pulled but there is no one there. SCARY but THRILLING!

19 Now You See Me Now You See Me Product Image

This film is AMAZING! Everything in the film happened for a reason and it truly leaves you guessing at every turn. Nothing ever happens as expected. Great effects and very clever plot too. I am so surprised it isn't higher, should be top 10! Watch this before you vote for another!

This movie is absolutely awesome. I could not help but smiling at the end then getting angry because it ended. They're making a second one that I'm unsure of. Let's face it you should never make a sequel to absolutely awesome movies like that. Can't wait to watch it though

Oh my god! I've watched this movie only a million times! Best movie right after The Princess Bride. Such amazing personalities that fit the characters. And such an unexpected ending. Love it!

I love this film, it is amazing like the second film. This movie is one of the best films of 2013, so is The Lone Ranger, Planes, Monsters University, and other good movies.

20 Her Her Product Image

I don't know if I care enough to be bothered that an outright masterpiece is ranked 44 spots below Iron Man 3 (considering I also love guilty pleasures like Iron Man 3 and Fast 6)... But I do know that you're all missing out on something staggeringly good. Don't do that to yourselves, folks. Watch Her. It's the best film of the year, hands down. It might be the best in as many years.

This movie is below Grown Ups 3? Oh god..

Please do yourselves a favor and watch Her. I came out overwhelmed, and couldn't stop crying. this movie is beautiful, and I feel like anyone who's been in love can relate to it and find beauty in it somewhere. It's art.

I can't believe Her is at 40th place! And Iron Man 3 is first! (Not that I don't love Iron Man. I do love it, but I love Her even more). There is NOT a BETTER STORY than Her. I haven't seen such an awesome and different movie in such a long long time. Sad that it is in 40th place. :(

It's really good! It's something fresh and new. People like to see the same things every year, but this was good. A little underrated.

21 Prisoners Prisoners Product Image

This film left me exhausted! Rarely does a thriller of this magnitude come along. I sat through the end credits in awe and I bought the blu-ray as soon as it came out. The performances are exceptional, just astonishing. The editing, soundtrack and the cinematography by Roger Deakins are absolutely stunning. The story is told masterfully. It's a dark, gritty, suspenseful, disturbing and incredibly immersive viewing experience. Gyllenhaal's detective character is one of the most fascinating of its kind and portrayed beautifully along with the rest of the cast. I couldn't find a single flaw in any of the performances. Superbly made and acted. Favorite film of the year for sure.

This list shouldn't exist yet because excellent films like Prisoners and Captain Phillips have just come out and wont get very high because they are so recent, anyway Prisoners was the best movie of the year so far because it was brutal and gritty and had brilliant acting like a British crime drama.

I take it that the only reason this is so far down is because it was only released one week ago. But honestly, as a man person who watches movies on a daily basis. This is the best movie you could ask to see all year! You won't regret watching it!

Movies like this one doesn't happen a lot, it's so unique. I have nothing to tell you about it better than go watch it yourself, then come and tell us what you think!

22 American Hustle American Hustle Product Image

Impeccably acted, gripping and immensely entertaining. American Hustle showcases great humor, terrific dialogue and a cameo that is absolutely perfect. Such a cool and stylish film. Consistently captivating with plenty of well-made and fascinating characters. And the soundtrack is just superb, it's perfect. American Hustle is of the highest quality on every level. A film I can't wait to watch again.

I watched this on the plane to New York so I didn't have the best experience watching this. But from what I watched and heard this is an brilliantly acted, amazingly written with a surprisingly funny script. Top marks to amy Adams, Bradley cooper and jennifer Lawrence, who gives such a brillant, funny and moving performance, easily stealing the show, as ever

Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Robert DeNiro, Louis C.K. This movie's cast alone should put it in the top 10! It's also a really good movie with a slow burn but awesome con-man ending.

This is a movie that doesn't sacrifice. It doesn't sacrifice characters for plot or vice versa, and it doesn't sacrifice intelligence for style or vice versa. It's nearly flawless.

23 Oz the Great and Powerful Oz the Great and Powerful Product Image

It's a great film, but let down by Mila munis ( pre witch ) Michelle Williams cheesiness ( but she was good) and a few script errors.

Its production design is awesome. And we can watch it for james franco and the visual effects are too good.

Oz the cheesy and boring

It was really good

24 Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Product Image

This film is just plain hilarious and got me laughing every minute. One of my favourite squeals.

One of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I had tears in my eyes watching it in the theater.

What the hell! Anchorman is... well Anchorman. I'm 12 and I know that.

Haven't seen it. And it's still the best.

25 Saving Mr. Banks

This was a very touching film that connects what we have in modern days and how it was puzzled together so many years ago.

I'm no fan of "Mary Poppins", but this was definitely the best film of 2013.
