Top 10 Best Movies of 2014

The Top Ten
1 Guardians of the Galaxy

I recently rewatched the first and second Guardians of the Galaxy films (not counting the third one, due to my relations with the MCU nowadays being at an all-time low). To be honest, they still hold up today, and both films have great soundtracks. I even had my very own "Awesome Mix" Spotify playlist consisting of music from the 70s.

"Hooked On A Feeling" by Blue Swede, "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes, "Southern Nights" by Glen Campbell, "Wham Bam Shang-A-Lang" by Silver - they're all on the soundtracks of both movies. My playlist had "Still The One" by Orleans, "Let Your Love Flow" by The Bellamy Brothers, "Brick House" by The Commodores, "Fox On The Run" by Sweet, and others. Peter Quill and Ron Burgundy introduced me to a lot of good music.

2 Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Without a doubt, the best movie Marvel has released in years - it even tops The Avengers! An awesome movie filled with action, drama, character development, and plenty of suspense! A thriller worth seeing a few times over!

Marvel is red hot right now, and 2014 was no exception. From Marvel's deal with Walt Disney Pictures alone, Marvel had Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Big Hero 6. Then there was Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past.

It shouldn't be so low. I loved Lego and GotG and Interstellar, but this is right up there with them as the best of 2014. I don't know anyone who doesn't like this movie. It totally changed up the Marvel universe in a new and exciting way. There's really no downside.

3 The Lego Movie

This is by far my favorite movie of all time! I really didn't think much of it from the first trailer, but this movie is amazing! Great characters, great animation, and it's very funny! Even if you're an adult, this isn't something you want to miss!

Totally loved this movie! I was determined not to like it at first (I'm a real wimp when it comes to new movies), but it had me laughing from the first line, "He is coming. Cover your butt." I died! Thumbs up for Emmet and the gang!

This movie brought me my favorite song. It's also perfect for boys who like to play with their Lego blocks. The Lego Movie helps kids improve their imaginations and makes them laugh themselves silly!

4 X-Men: Days of Future Past

This was a great year for movies, and I saw every movie on the top 10 except for The Fault in Our Stars. Even though each of these movies was awesome, no film gave me a better experience than this one. I was never a fan of the X-Men films before this. Watching this for the first time, I was so surprised by how good it was and how much I cared about the characters. Great movie!

An explosive burst of awesomeness! It manages to balance a great script with gorgeous special effects perfectly, which makes up for a highly compelling and entertaining blockbuster. Everyone's on their best, and it's an absolute treat watching the character interactions. A marvelous thrill ride from start to finish.

5 Interstellar

Despite the fact that it's a psychological tearjerker, it had blown me away. Wow. Pretty cool stuff. I kind of understand how black holes and wormholes work, just not entirely. Interstellar was thought-provoking on why the environment is being affected on Earth, and a few brave astronauts find a place to colonize on different moons. There was a drought, and not enough water to provide crops full of delicious corn and wheat. *laugh* Of course, we see Matthew McConaughey's character as a farm boy turned astronaut leave Earth with a few colleagues in a spaceship, and there are a few trials they had to face when they get there. I can't tell you what happens when they're on a planet different from Earth, or you'll be disappointed. So to sum it all up, no more spoilers! It was just great, but not the best movie of all time.

6 Big Hero 6

Why do people go for Boyhood, a boring-as-hell movie, when they could go for an absolute gem like Big Hero 6? Great animation, Baymax, the action of a Marvel movie, great voice acting, and the feels! I haven't gotten those feels since The Lion King. Although not my favorite movie of 2014 (that would be GOTG, pardon my Marvel fanboyism), this is another masterpiece, just as good as Wreck-it-Ralph, in my opinion.

Big Hero 6 is number 1 on my list. It is the best movie ever created by humans. The Lego Movie is lame. My whole family fell asleep during The Lego Movie.

7 Whiplash

Absolutely amazing. THAT ENDING left me sweating because of the absolute intensity of it. I loved every second of it. I've seen it three times and I don't look away once. Whenever I blink, I get a little sad because of it. Boyhood and Birdman are the other two films that I think should get first with The Lego Movie not far behind, but this one takes the cake. Absolutely amazing.

Whiplash deserves to be much higher, in my opinion! How is it lower than Godzilla and The Maze Runner? Stellar sound mixing, filming, editing, and directing, and JK Simmons was amazing. He totally deserved his Oscar. I think Miles Teller should have got more credit too. I think he's an amazing actor. Everything about this movie was wonderful, the best movie of 2014 in my opinion!

8 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Really? Hunger Games at #6? Come on, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was AMAZING! Best CGI EVER, stellar performances by Andy Serkis and Gary Oldman, an awesome plot, and epic action scenes all add up to this amazing film that put the Planet of the Apes franchise back in business. Guardians of the Galaxy was overrated.

Not to mention Andy Serkis' Batman impression as Caesar was cool. Not literally a Batman impression, but if you've seen the movie, you'll get what I mean...

I loved The Hobbit movie almost as much as this, but I decided on Planet of the Apes 2 because of how original it is - yes, I said it's original. The movie has nearly nothing to do with the old movies and has a much different tone than the first movie in the reboot series.

9 The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

The Lego Movie is good, but not as good as this. This is the better of the Hunger Games movies because of more action scenes and amazing acting from Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen).

And the Hanging Tree was on point!

Wow, just wow. It was depressing. I don't know if I like it or not. I'm usually not a big fan of intense movies like that, but I have to vote for this one. Amazing movie, great plot, etc. My favorite movie is the first one, but still, well done.

I almost voted for The Lego Movie because it had Legos in it, but I decided on The Hunger Games because it's awesome. Well, I guess the same goes for The Lego Movie, but The Hunger Games has Peeta in it. How can The Lego Movie beat it?

10 The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

I guess I'm biased because I'm from New Zealand (No, this movie did NOT come from Hollywood), but this movie took my breath away. Superior to its predecessors in every way, this movie truly captures the enticing magic of the even more amazing Lord of the Rings trilogy in a strange, morbidly epic fashion.

I cried twice just in the last 15 minutes before the credits. This movie may just be an ending to the trilogy, but it's an action-packed, emotional, and epic finale. The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings saga is henceforth the best movie franchise ever filmed.

Other honorable mentions:
Guardians of the Galaxy
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Edge of Tomorrow (or "Live. Die. Repeat." whatever)
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1
How to Train Your Dragon 2

Not-so-honorable mentions:
Transformers: Age of Extinction
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
The Legend of Hercules

The Contenders
11 Nightcrawler

This movie and Whiplash are underrated because blockbusters take their place. These movies should be in the top 5, and Hunger Games was bad.

Hands down the best movie of 2014! Nightcrawler for the win - you have to know good acting and storyline when you see it!

I don't think enough people have seen this one. Best crime thriller of the last decade. It looks great and has some killer acting in it.

12 Godzilla

This movie is amazing, probably the best Godzilla movie to date, and here's why.

1: Everyone complained about Cranston's character getting less screen time which was given to Aaron Taylor Johnson's character, but really think about this, almost all the greatest sci-fi/action movies had bland main characters and people never complained about those.

2: The MUTOs may have been in the movie more than Godzilla, but they were awesome, and the next reason will go into detail on that.

3: The sound mixing in this movie is beautiful. Every time I heard Godzilla or the MUTOs roar, I got chills.

13 Boyhood

The Fault in Our Stars? Mockingjay? Godzilla? What in the world is wrong with you, people? 2014 was such a stunning year for film and you guys decide to settle for such mediocrity. You are really missing out on some incredible works of art, such as Leviathan, Whiplash, Wild Tales, Ida, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Nightcrawler, Mommy, and, of course, Boyhood.

This film is a masterpiece. It is an utterly unique and absolutely satisfying experience you can't quite bottle. So, come on, guys. I know your high school mates want to see Transformers, but it doesn't kill to watch well-made films every once in a while. Go see Boyhood. I swear it will be worth it.

14 How to Train Your Dragon 2

Best animated movie of 2014. It develops the characters established in the first movie to whole new levels and deals with dark themes not often touched in a movie directed toward children. The only reason I think that it isn't in the top 10 is because not enough people have seen it.

Hey guys, this is the best animated movie this year. Full of entertainment, elation, and emotionally resonant. Certainly deserves a place in the top 5. Hiccup and Toothless are just great. Yes, certainly the first part is unparalleled. Its soundtrack was amazing. Waiting for the third movie.

15 Edge of Tomorrow

If a highly praised filmmaker like Christopher Nolan were attached to Edge of Tomorrow, it would have been the film of the year. Instead, Nolan turned to making "clever", overlong, complex, confident, and nonsensical yak-fest films which are praised because they are original and so complicated, viewers are transfixed into feeling they saw something magnificent, when in reality, it was just an unrefined mess. (Inception, Interstellar)

It was kind of hard for me to decide, as there were some pretty dang good movies in the year 2014. But upon contemplation, I've come to think that this has the best storyline and most ingenuity. Or at least it's in the top five in these departments. But hey, that's my opinion.

16 Birdman

Movies don't win Best Picture at the Oscars for nothing. Genius film - the music, the filming, and some of the scenes. It always kept you guessing but it was still easy to understand. Way better than Guardians of the Galaxy, The Fault in Our Stars, and pretty much every film on this list.

The part where the main character flies like a bird in New York is one of the best scenes in cinema history. I guess you haters should grow up and watch this masterpiece.

Probably the worst list ever. Haha, this is below Rio 2 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? This is a modern classic and is by far the best movie of the year.

17 Gone Girl

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time, with a plot that twists in the middle of the movie in an incredible and unpredictable way when you think you have it figured out. It did not get the attention it deserves because people would not give it a try, but this is a masterpiece.

I am not sure how all of the Hollywood fluff above beat out this movie. It was by far the best of the year! The direction, cinematography, acting, and musical score, everything about this movie was top-notch. It deserves to be much higher on this list!

18 22 Jump Street

Come on, the film is almost as funny as the first, was certainly one of the best comedies of the year, with a lot of hilarious quotes. It deserves a much better position, guys!

It's the end of 2014, and by now, I was definitely expecting one of the most intelligent, razor-sharp, witty comedies that I've seen to be in the top ten.

One of the few comedies that actually lived up to its expectations. I'd say this was even funnier than 21 Jump Street.

19 The Grand Budapest Hotel

Wes Anderson does it again! This artful roller coaster ride of a film is outrageously entertaining and superbly quirky with gorgeously dark undertones. Fascinating characters, incredible visuals, great soundtrack, terrific performances, and beautifully detailed. I need to see this film again!

Signature Wes Anderson, but I prefer most of his other films over this one any time. It felt rushed and chaotic, despite some great visually entertaining moments and a good cast. But it doesn't come close to Boyhood, Calvary, Interstellar, The Imitation Game, Mommy, or Birdman, in my opinion. Still, it's good fun though.

20 The Fault In Our Stars

I definitely loved the book and the movie. And I'm 40 years old. It is a wonderful movie about living and accepting life as it comes your way, may it be for the living or the dying. So what if it's cheesy? Still a good movie, nonetheless. I'd pick this over and over again rather than the usual superhero stuff.

It was proven that more popular equals more haters... What's wrong with you people?! This movie was great and one of my favorites. It never made me disappointed, even upon having trouble downloading the movie. All I can say is that it was a very good film, with an amazing plot and beautiful from start to end. A big GREAT to everyone!

21 The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Awesome film. I admired that film so much. I think the villains were great (Green Goblin, Electro, The Man in the Shadows), the plot was awesome too, the Easter eggs were clever, and also I think that some scenes were awesome, like, for example, the conversation between The Man in the Shadows and Harry Osborn about building the famous Sinister Six, which is possibly the best Easter egg in the film, as it referred to the novel "The Gathering of the Sinister Six." And SPOILERS for those who didn't read the credits, the credits revealed The Man in the Shadows to be Gustav Fiers, The Gentleman (who in the novel built another version of the Sinister Six), meaning that in the start, Sony may have wanted to build a bigger universe. I feel it's awful that there may be no Sinister Six movie or no Amazing Spider-Man 3 movie. I really hope that the new Tom Holland Spider-Man movies get to be even better, that there are even more movies in the MCU, and that they feature villains like Mysterio, Green Goblin, the Sinister Six, and Oscorp Industries.

22 The Maze Runner

This is absolutely one of the best movies I've ever seen. The casting is perfect, and the setting of The Glade is accurate, in my view. This movie is absolutely amazing. If you've read the books, you'll understand. If there are any hate comments under this movie, it's probably because you haven't read the books and don't have a good understanding. The books provide better detail, as any other book would. But I think this movie should be in the top ten!

I loved this movie! I did not read the first book, but I read the second one, "Scorch Trials." I am in the middle of the third one, "Death Cure." The book is so good... who wants a spoiler alert and a cliffhanger so you can be excited for the second movie! In the book, what happens is this: Thomas and all his friends weren't the only people who did the maze. Another group did. But they were all girls and one boy. The people who rescue Thomas and all of them also rescue "Group B," which comprises all the girls. Thomas and all of them are "Group A." They are separated for a long time. On the back neck of everybody in Thomas's group, Group A, Minho has the words "leader" on his. Thomas has the words "To be killed by Group B." Thomas also finds a paper that had Teresa's. Hers says "the betrayer." READ THE BOOK.

23 Divergent

I was pleasantly surprised. The book was decent, but the movie was far better. Better movie than the first Hunger Games, which was unpolished, in my opinion.

Best film I have ever seen. It's amazing. I recommend it to everyone.

One of the best movies, in my opinion, should be in the top ten.

24 Muppets Most Wanted

I have never watched The Muppets Show, but I liked this movie. Mostly because of the actors, though. Especially Ty Burrell. Tina Fey and Ricky were also funny.

25 Mr. Peabody & Sherman

Oh man, this movie was AWESOME! It's got time traveling! And alternate versions of characters!
