Movie Review - Cars 3

MegaSoulhero Kind of weird that Cars got two sequels before the Incredibles got one. When I first heard they were making a Cars 3, I wasn't too excited. I liked the first one but it wasn't Pixar quality. And Cars 2 is the worst Pixar movie ever made. Wow that movie was terrible. But the trailers for Cars 3 looked interesting. So I gave it a chance. And I'm gonna talk about it.

In this movie, Lightning McQueen has trouble competing in races due to a new generation of racecars. He wants to show that he still has what it takes to be a great racer. So he goes through training with the help of Cruz Ramirez so he could beat Jackson Storm in a race. This movie has gotten mixed reactions. But what did I think of it? I enjoyed it. It was a decent Pixar film. The great thing is, at least it's about racing again. No idea why Cars 2 had to be about spies. Speaking of which, if you hated that movie, Cars 3 makes NO reference to it whatsoever. It's as if it never happened. Even Mater's screen time has been decreased. He appears in a few scenes, but he's not heavily focused on. So it's great to see that Lightning is the main character again. And I felt like he got a lot more development. Doc Hudson is brought up a lot in this movie. Lightning is still shown to look up to him as not only a mentor, but a father figure as well. We even see him in some flashbacks. What's interesting is that they used unused audio from the first Cars movie for whenever Doc speaks in this movie. Considering Paul Newman passed away after the first film.

I thought the new characters that were introduced were pretty good. There's this one character named Sterling. At first I thought he was gonna be the villain, but he's more of a jerk than a villain. There actually isn't really a "villain" in this movie. I thought Jackson Storm was pretty cool. Although, I wished he appeared in the movie a little more. And I reallly like Cruz Ramirez. She tries her hardest to help Lightning train to become a better racer. I also thought she was pretty funny. She has the most character development in this movie. Although, there is one thing about her that I just can't stand. But I feel like it would be a spoiler if I told you what it was. So I won't tell you. Each voice actor in this movie does a great job. They really capture the emotions of the characters. We understand Lightning's struggles and Cruz's struggles as well. You can also tell that the animators stepped up their game. The visuals in this movie are amazing! Some of the settings in this movie look photo realistic. I'd even say it looks better than the Good Dinosaur.

My main problem, however, is that it takes a while for the movie to get fully interesting. It starts out very slow, but starts to get better as it goes along. The scene that takes place at the derby is when things really started to get interesting. Like I said before, Jackson Storm doesn't appear that much. Which is a shame because Armie Hammer's a great actor and his performance as this pompous racer really works well. I wish we got to see more of him. Chick Hicks is in the movie. He's the antagonist of the first movie. And apparently he's a talk show host now. My god! He sounds NOTHING like he did in the first movie! That's because he has a different voice actor. Michael Keaton didn't come back to do Chick Hick's voice. Most likely because he was too busy working on Spider-Man Homecoming. I don't understand why they decided to bring Chick Hicks back if they couldn't get someone better to replace Keaton. Before the movie even starts, you can already predict what's going to happen at the end. But as predictable as that ending was, it was pretty heartwarming. I thought the trailers for the movie were pretty misleading. It makes us think it's going to have a dark tone and go in this different direction, but it's still light-hearted like the first film. I was a little disappointed by that. Every Disney film that has come out this year has been disappointing to some extent. Dead Men Tell No Tales was okay at best, Guardians 2 wasn't as good as the first Guardians movie, and Beauty and the Beast was an insult to the original animated film. There hasn't been one this year that has really impressed me so far.

Cars 3 is a major improvement over Cars 2. It's not one of Pixar's best, but I still enjoyed it. Do I think it's better than the first one? I'm not sure yet. If you liked the first one, then you'll like this one. If you hate the Cars films, then you might not like this one. I'm sure kids will enjoy it. Speaking of which, join me in my next blog post in which I rant about parents with annoying kids in movie theaters. Also, I'm thinking about reviewing the Mummy this weekend. And I don't have a lot of nice things to say about that movie. So anyway, Cars 3 is definitely worth a watch.

Score: 7/10
