Movie Review - Power Rangers

MegaSoulhero I just saw the new Power Rangers movie! I should get this out of the way, I had very little knowledge about the Power Rangers before watching this movie. In fact, this was the first Power Rangers related thing I've watched. I've heard of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers show but I've never watched it. So I went into this movie not really knowing much about the source material. From the trailers, I was getting a Fant4stic vibe from it. So I thought this movie was going to suck. And to my surprise, it didn't suck! But I wouldn't exactly say it's good!

Basically, it's about 5 high school teenagers who find some rocks that give them super powers. And they need to use these powers and work together to stop an alien threat from destroying the world. These teenagers would eventually become the Power Rangers! Let me get to what I like most about this film. The acting! Each actor in this movie gives an excellent performance! The rangers themselves are awesome! They actually act like how real teenagers would behave! You could tell they were trying harder than Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast! Billy and Trini are my favorite characters in the film! I've never heard of RJ Cyler before this movie, but he was really funny! And Becky G definitely shows that she has talent in acting and not just in music! Elizabeth Banks plays the villain of the film, Rita Repulsa. She's good, but there are also times when I feel like she's over acting. I know she's supposed to be a silly and over the top villain, but sometimes it doesn't fit when the movie is trying to be serious. Seeing the origin of the Power Rangers and how they became a team is really interesting to watch! We get to see them bond and interact with each other! That scene where they get to know each other at the fire pit was very well done! This movie also has a very dark tone compared to Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers! Again, I haven't watched the show, but I've seen snippets of it.

As for negatives, there's actually quite a lot. Like I've stated before, the movie doesn't know if it wants to be serious or not. The rangers give very serious performances while Rita acts pretty silly most of the time. There's also quite a lot of humor in the movie. I did laugh a few times, but sometimes the humor would come in at the wrong times like during a serious moment. That's a problem that I also had with Doctor Strange. Also, the Rangers meet this robot named Alpha 5, voiced by Bill Hader, who basically helps them with training. I hate him! He's annoying! As for the CGI, probably the worst I've seen this year. But it's a Power Rangers film. I don't expect the effects to be groundbreaking. The climax was pretty disappointing. It was just one big CGI mess! And the rangers are somehow able to operate these vehicles that they've never used before. That was kind of a deus ex machina. And this movie also has the most unsubtle product placement ever! Krispy Kreme? Really?

I don't think this movie is as horrible as critics say it is. It's not great but it's not that bad either. It was ok. It was fun to watch. The actors were really good here and some of the jokes a pretty funny. But the CGI was a mess and there were problems with the story. I haven't seen the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, but maybe I will eventually. If you're a Power Rangers fan, chances are you might enjoy this movie more than I did! I'm just gonna give this movie the same score I gave Beauty and the Beast even though I thought this was slightly better. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna have some Krispy Kreme donuts! Delicious!

Score: 6/10

"You could tell they were trying harder than Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast! "

1. I personally didn't like the acting, but I respect your opinion.
2. I get that you didn't like Emma Watson, but can you please stop telling us? When I brought up La La Land, I was comparing it to another musical to show why one was better than the other in my opinion. Here you are simply bashing Emma Watson just for the sake of bashing Emma Watson. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just trying to give some helpful advice. I've learned that people get really annoyed when I constantly bring up and complaining about something I don't like, so I try to stop doing it. - DCfnaf

Thanks for the advice - MegaSoulhero

You're welcome. This is just help from critic to fellow critic. 🙂 - DCfnaf

I also wanted to bring it up because a user by the name of VideoGamefan5 got lots of hate from tons of TTT users for constantly hating on Zootopia. - DCfnaf

I watched this with my brother and it was great. - visitor

Anyways, commenting on the actual review itself, good job. I definitely agree with Rita Repulsa being such a lame villain. She reminded me of how lame the Enchantress was in Suicide Squad. And yes, why was the CG so tragically awful? Goldar looks...disgusting. - DCfnaf

I Found This Movie To Be Good, - VideoGamefan5
