Best Progressive Metal Albums

The Contenders: Page 7

121 The Great Misdirect - Between the Buried and Me

Regarded as their greatest album, alongside Colours, but every album of theirs is debatable because they're all so damn good. Probably the best band on the planet right now.

122 Energetic Disassembly - Watchtower
123 Ink Complete - Spastic Ink
124 The Thirteenth Step - a Perfect Circle

Some incredible tracks on here, but some patchy material as well. Mer De Noms owns it. Still good though.

125 Sound Awake - Karnivool

Yes, great Australian prog metal. World class.

Simply the perfect album.

126 Mabool - Orphaned Land

This is the best metal album ever recorded.. Don't believe me? Then go and listen for yourself

127 Deadwing - Porcupine Tree
128 Quiet World - Native Construct
129 The Perfect Element Part 1 - Pain of Salvation

Absurdly underrated- was ahead its time and sadly under appreciated back in 2000 and clearly that's still the case- Some of the best vocals and songwriting in all progressive rock/metal. - Orpheus

I wonder why this is not rated higher? This album is the pinnacle of PoS' progressive sound. Songwriting and performance this had a new and fresh sound back when it was released. This was mimicked by a lot of young bands. Bring this up the list people

130 Feed On Your Misery - Divided Multitude
131 Miss Machine - The Dillinger Escape Plan
132 Calculating Infinity - The Dillinger Escape Plan
133 The Inner Circle - Evergrey

True metal, my man. Is this progressive epic on your list? If not, why not? Chugging riffs, bluesy vocals, female backing vocals, keyboards, violinists, spoken word, immense sound. These guys are Queensryche with testicles - and they're not XXX waxed like Queensryche's either. The best progressive metal album I own, unless you count early Metallica.

134 One - Tesseract

Far heavier than Altered State, and is all the better for it. It also has their best line-up.

135 The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails

One of the most experimental industrial metal double albums ever made, and Reznor was killing it at this period of his career. He throws the kitchen sink at you, and it's a joy to listen to.

136 Disco Volante - MR, Bungle

My favourite Mr Bungle album due to its sheer craziness. It's Frank Zappa meets Slayer, and everything in between.

137 Mer de Noms - A Perfect Circle

From The Hollow, to Rose, to Judith, to 3 Libras, this album is a masterpiece.

138 Odyssey/Scala - Tesseract

An incredible live cd/dvd set with their reunited One line-up, this is heavy and epic.

139 Undertow - Tool

From Intolerance, to Prison Sex, to Sober, to Disgustipated, this is the album that blew people's minds apart as to how emotive and heavy and great progressive rock could be. The young Maynard James Keenan was criticised at the time for his nasally vocal style and high literature lyrics, but history has spoken about how great both the band and Maynard are. It was very reminiscent of the release of Metallica's Kill 'em All...very few people understood it, but Undertow didn't leave my player for months, just like every other Tool release.

140 Promised Land - Queensryche

The last truly great Queensryche album, this one drops the commerciality of Empire and goes with in a whole new direction. All of their great albums did...
