The Contenders: Page 4
One of the top 10 horses of all time. Barely beaten by Swaps in the Kentucky Derby but far and away the better horse as his winning times in the Preakness and Belmonst attest to.
From memory never run in the cox So you think would be a better choice
Still racing but problem one of the best if not the best two mile chasers of all time, his cruising speed second to none.
One of my favourite Horses going over the big fences, clears them with so little effort
Best looker in the world and best jumper ever
What a machineV 5 Comments
Another z mare who is so amazing.because she is from France, that made her unpopural.
UNDEFEATED ; WON THE ARC 2008 ; EuropeAN CHAMPION 3-YR-OLD FILLY 2008 ; EuropeAN HORSE OF THE YEAR 2008.
Would people please stop saying that he was the one that killed Ruffian, he was just a horse listening to what his rider told him and doing was he was breed to do. He had no concept of what was happening and it was by no means his fault.
What he did was foolish
He was the one that pushed ruffin to hard he is really the one who killed her
IT IS NOT RUFFISN ITS RUFFIAN GET IT RIGHT. - GatsbyV 1 Comment
Certainly a great champ of his era -- his record winning margin will be hard to beat.
Won the first and second Melbourne cups
Not only did he win the first and second Melbourne Cup but he also won the second Cup by the longest winning margine in the Melbourne Cup (8 lengths)
Best horse ever. what a fighter
Probably the best middle distance horse in the southern hemisphere. New Zealand bred mare feared no challengers.
Toughest horse ever period!
Top class filly/mare who remained unbeaten in her career in NZ. Mostly raced in the tougher Australian races where she won 2 Cox Plates & 2 Doncasters, among her many race wins. Won the Grp1 Hong Kong Mile beating Hong Kong superstar Fairy King Prawn and was also placed in the Dubai Duty Free.
Sunline was Northerly's Bitch!V 1 Comment
The great thing about the Rock was his capably to run so well in any condition, hard ground soft ground, didn't matter!
Best horse ever. Seen him numerous of times. Never bored always amazed.
Swaps was better on three legs than most of the other horses during his time. He held more world,American and track records than any horse when he retired, before or since. If he had had better management and not had an injured hoof,it would be frightening to think of great he could have been. If you compare Swaps times to Secretariats, you would see that he bested Secretariats times at most distances. Maybe the critics are biased because his owner was from California and was not a part of the racing fraternity elite.
If you compare The BLOOD-Horses number 3 and number 4 horses of the 20th Century with Swaps, at the same tracks WHERE THEY ALL RACED AT, Swaps out raced both CITATION AND KELSO. Swaps is a clear winner. Swaps is argubly the greatest horse ever, along with Man o'War and Secretariat, NO Horse ever ran so fast, so easy, and under 130 pounds time and time again as sWAPS DID.
They have Barbaro at #8 and not Swaps above him, for goodness sake, what is going on with this poll? Outrageous.
Only Man o War won races as easily as Swaps. His winning percentage carrying 130# was 88%(7 out of 8). When he retired,he held more records than any other with four of them being world records. When he was healthy,he never had to run all out because he had the race won 10 lengths from the finish.V 5 Comments
TOMMY SMITH TRAINED THIS NEW ZEALAND BREED CHAMPION.
IF ANYONE BOTHERS TO CHECK OUT HIS RECORD YOU WOULD BE
ASTONISHED.THE HORSE GOT ILL AND CAME CLOSE TO DEATH, WITH THE TRAINER TOMMY SMITH SLEEPING AT HIS SIDE, UNTIL THE GREAT HORSE PULLED THROUGH.BECAUSE OF THIS
THE HORSE WAS UNABLE TO RACE FOR ONE YEAR, BUT RETURNED IN DEVASTATING FORM. ARGUABLY ON FORM AS GOOD AS OR BETTER THAN PHAR-LAP.IF YOU don't AGREE AT LEAST CHECK OUT
HIS RACE HISTORY. I LOVE THIS PLAIN SWAY BACKED GELDING, CHAMPION HORSE, CHAMPION AUSTRALIAN TRAINER.NEW ZEALAND BRED JUST LIKE PHAR LAP.
To be ranked so low at 77 is an insult to an extraordinary horse as is the incorrect spelling of his name. In my books he is number one and should at least be in the top three. For a race horse to win the races that he had, then to survive a close to death illness of colic, return to racing after twelve months and continue winning major races over all distances speaks for itself. A true champion in all aspects of the word.
This horse was certainly (with illness included) Australia's BEST
This champion's name was Tulloch. No doubt was the best 3yo in the world winning 12 Group1 races in his 3yo year alone incl. Australia's big 3 Derby's and Australia's premier 2400m race against the older horses in a world record time on turf. Missed his entire 4yo and most of his 5yo year, likely his best racing years, due to an illness that almost claimed his life. Came back and resumed winning some of Australia's biggest races incl. Australia's championship 2000m WFA race the WS Cox Plate. Once unplaced in 53 starts (36 wins) when poorly ridden and asked to burden the massive weight of 10 stone 1 over 2 miles. A leviathan of the Australian turf trained by champion trainer TJ Smith (282 Group1 wins) and sits comfortably alongside Phar Lap as the greatest horse to ever race in Australia.V 5 Comments
Charismatic won the derby an preakness and was in front in the final sixteenth of the belmont when he fractured his leg and finished third he never raced again
That was a great horse! Should be top 20
Incredible race horse. He went into the Kentucky Derby undefeated and won by one of the fastest recorded (the fastest in 13 years. Nyquist ran three more times that same year, but didn't capture another win and was retired. At retirement he had undergone colic surgery where it was discovered he had a twist in his intestines. I trust history will be kind to him.
Dan Patch has had more movies and books written about him than any other racehorse.
In the broadway show the "Music Man" the lyrics say:
Not a wholesome trottin' race, but a race where they set down right on the horse! Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy sittin' on Dan Patch? Make your blood boil? Well, I should say!
Crowds of 100, 000 turned out for a glimpse of the horse, which possessed an unusually gentle temperament yet radiated charisma. Dwight Eisenhower lined up with his parents at the 1904 Kansas State Fair to see him, and Harry Truman recalled that as a boy he had written a fan letter to the horse.
He never lost a race and held records that lasted for up to 50 years.
More famous than any other horse. The whole decade was about Dan Patch. He was certainly more famous in his day than Secretariat was. It is like comparing Caruso with Pavarotti. One is a legend. The other looks up to the legend. - swanning
Perhaps not the greatest racehorse ever, but certainly, he should be higher on this list than 66.
He should be 3million times higher than thisV 1 Comment
Canonero II was an under appreciated horse. He won the Kentucky Derby in near record time. He easily won the Preakness. He lost the Belmont due to an injury. A 1971 Sports Illustrated article detailed why Canonero should not have even run in the Belmont due to that same injury. Add this horse to the list of "almost greats".
To compare American style of racing to Europe is silly, would anyone compare
Steve Prefontaine (spelling) to Bob Hayes you can't. so split it up. In American racing, the Triple Crown in particular, one would have to put Canonero II would be in the top 15 easily.
