Best Race Horses of All Time

The Contenders: Page 5

81 Nyquist

Incredible race horse. He went into the Kentucky Derby undefeated and won by one of the fastest recorded (the fastest in 13 years. Nyquist ran three more times that same year, but didn't capture another win and was retired. At retirement he had undergone colic surgery where it was discovered he had a twist in his intestines. I trust history will be kind to him.

82 Canonero II

Canonero II was an under appreciated horse. He won the Kentucky Derby in near record time. He easily won the Preakness. He lost the Belmont due to an injury. A 1971 Sports Illustrated article detailed why Canonero should not have even run in the Belmont due to that same injury. Add this horse to the list of "almost greats".

To compare American style of racing to Europe is silly, would anyone compare
Steve Prefontaine (spelling) to Bob Hayes you can't. so split it up. In American racing, the Triple Crown in particular, one would have to put Canonero II would be in the top 15 easily.

83 Easy Goer

Fastest Mile by a 3 year old ever. Second fastest Belmont ever. Five Grade 1's in a row in the summer of 89 against all ages. If not for two terrible rides from Pat Day this horse is top ten, and right there with Man o war and Secretariat. Been a racing fan for 30 years and he is the best I ever saw.

Like his dad Alydar Easy Goer choked when it mattered most. He deserves his spot which would be under Sunday Silence.

It's a crime that he is ranked higher than Sunday Silence. Sunday beat him three times out of four

85 Treve

The way she won the Arc was simply stunning. Time will tell if she earns a place among the all-time greats

Greatest filly ever and top 5 greatest horse ever, no horse has ever ran for a triple arc crown

I think she will earn her place amongst the elite. Two Arc wins ranks her up with the best

Favourite for third Arc in October. Now that would be an acheivement

88 Exterminator

This horse was called "Old Bones" because when he started racing it was very later at age 7 years as a starter. He was lanky and had a large head. He was discovered in an unusual place as a cart horse. He had personality too and heart to run. I read a book about him when I was a child. His name speaks that he was unbelievable for his time.

89 Risen Star

Son of Secretariat. Ran the Belmont just like his father, would've won the triple crown if it weren't for the traffic in the Derby. Great racehorse.

Very good horse, way better than much horses ranked in better position

99 Overdose

best ever

Bred in GB, sold for 2000 gns because of his crooked legs, raced for Hungary. Undefeated in his first 14 races. Won his first race by 18 lenghts. Won two G2 in Germany and came 4th in the King's Stand (G1) in GB after fatal injuries. Would have won the Abbaye (G1) in Paris if the race hadn't been annulled. Set many new track records.
Overdose was the embodiment of hope for the Hungarians.
