Jimmy The Rev Sullivan
James Owen Sullivan, professionally known by his stage name The Rev, was an American musician, composer and songwriter, best known as the drummer, composer, songwriter, co-lead vocalist and founding member for the American heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold.
The Rev is the FASTEST and I mean fastest at drumming. He is very creative and likes to use the entire drum set in a single song. And seriously, Danny Carey only at 11?! WTF OK!? That guy is the most spiritual and creative Drummer ever! Sorry Danny I was gonna vote for ya but I thought I was able to vote twice. And really John Dolmayan at 32?! You people don't know what skill truly is!
Really, 30StM is not that good at all... "He Is Soul of the Drum", Umm no Danny Carey is. Tre Cool is okay I guess, wouldn't put him at the top 3 but oh well. Neil Peart is a very talented drummer as well. And seriously for the guy supporting Neil saying the Rev isn't good, just shut up... And Yoshiki is a genius at drumming! First time I saw him I was like "DAYUM". Joey Jordinson, You still amaze me when you play UPSIDE DOWN at your concerts! John Bonham's best song is "Moby Dick" without a doubt. R.I.P Lars Ulrich, your a VERY talented drummer but seriously lose ...more
The Rev and Mike Portnoy are two of my favorite drummers. 1 thing I don't like about this site is how many people are just picking favorite bands and not knowing anything about the actual drummer. If Shannon Leto was so good why didn't he get A SINGLE award for any of their albums? No cymbals named after him? No signature snares? Really? That must mean that he hasn't done anything ground breaking or really amazing. Mike Portnoy has won DOZENS of awards, and Jimmy has won several awards himself. I have seen Shannon Leto and his drum style is so boring and exactly the same every concert. He's a decent drummer but no where near the best. His stage presence is pitiful and people above are giving some ridiculously easy songs I used to cover right when I started drumming a while back. Its been several years and I still can't touch half of Mike Portnoys drumming or 50% of Jimmy's. People need to stop picking favorites, its really starting to piss me off
A legend that will never fully be appreciated. Avenged Sevenfold's first three albums really show his talent and creativity. From the raw awkwardly timed, lightning fast, drum fills galore "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet" to the masterfully timed and polished while still remaining raw "Waking the Fallen" and even more refined while still retaining his creativity "City of Evil".
These three albums really show off the maturing style that is unmistakably Jimmy's. In my opinion this was lost a bit in their self titled release with their focus much too strongly on creating a mainstream sound and completely lost without him in the terrible last offering "Nightmare". Mike Portney while obviously trying to imitate just cannot do "The Rev" justice.
Avenged died to me when Jimmy lost his life; at the very least we got three absolutely amazing, epic, perfect albums from them before one of the best modern drummers to grace this earth ...more
Jimmy was nuts. Best drummer, period. Just listen to the double bass pedals at the end of Unholy Confessions - INSANE! And he's only gotten better! How can anyone else even compare? They can't. Whether Jimmy wins this contest or not, he's the best in my eyes. Rest in Peace, Rat Head.
Man the rev... What can I say he's the best his drumming is completely UN-paralelled to anything I have ever heard or seen and the loss of him is the worst thing ever to happen in music and drumming history to lose someone that talented and that gifted is just a tragedy his work in "A little Piece of Heaven" and "Fiction" and lets not forget his work in "Afterlife" was pure and beautiful and as I type this up I'm listening to his work and I will never forget those sweet drum beats for he and his music with go and live on through all of us for as long as we live and let us pass that on through each and every one of us R.I.P. Rev and god bless your soul may you forever rock on and bring the sweet sound of avenged sevenfold to those up there with you god bless you and avenged sevenfold
Not only was he the best drummer he was one of the greatest musicians he played piano, sang in a lot of a7x songs wrote guitar part using his knowledge of music and also played in a avante garde metal band pinkly smooth on the side. Man when he passed on people who didn't like a7x weren't bad mouthing him but paying their respects because regardless who your favorite band is jimmy the rev sullivan is the best drummer of all time and he will live on in our memories.
it's awesome. I'm completely consent with the above.
The Rev is the best modern day drummer. He is like Jesus, but in the form of a drummer. Unlike other heavy metal drummers, he doesn't just do the same double bass beat over and over again. He uses his hands and feet to make the song insane. Listen to Darkness Surrounding, the drum solo is incredible, and he is changing the beat constantly, that's what makes him great. I am a huge Avenged Sevenfold fan, and have all of their albums, and I am drummer myself, and the Rev is my idol. He should definitely be ahead of Joey Jordinson, and half the people on this list. - a7xpwns84
Have been looking at a number of "Best Drummer" lists and sadly, the Rev isn't listed on any of them. This is a tragedy! His drumming, IMHO is pure genius, easily as good as Neil Peart (who is usually listed as the number one best drummer) and I feel that is only because of the Rev's untimely death that his talent and genius will never be fully appreciated, particularly by those who have no taste for A7X's music. The Rev is, indeed one of the best, if not THE best drummer I have ever heard and listening to his rhythms, solos and the complexity of his playing is music in itself even without the rest of the band's accompanyment.
Yea he can play anything his double bass beats are like no other he makes me strive to be a better drummer myself his quickness is unbelievable his rolls are like lightening he has blazing speed like there's a lot of drummers that play the double bass great but "The Rev" he can play the rest of the set I can say confidently better than any other drummer I have ever heard so maybe people should start listening to him then you'll see "The Rev is the Best"
A.W.E.S.O.M. E I have been looking at a number of "Best Drummer" lists and sadly, the Rev isn't listed on any of them. This is a tragedy! His drumming, in my humble opinion is pure genius, easily as good as Neil Peart (who is usually listed as the number one best drummer) and I feel that is only because of the Rev's untimely death that his talent and genius will never be fully appreciated, particularly by those who have no taste for A7X's music. Jimmy is amazing. The stuff that he can produce with two feet and two hands is amazing. Yes, he deserves to be number one. If you see him in a live show. You'd know why he should be number one. He adds things into the song during concerts that simply blows my mind. His blast beats are wicked and he's ALWAYS moving. Even if Avenged isn't doing a song during concert, he's doing drum solos. When they came to Chicago, he must've smoked something before he got here, he was simply a god.
An all-around talented musician. Backed-up M. Shadows on vocals in Avenged, and also was the lead singer in Pinkly Smooth. He played piano in a number of songs as well. And I'm not even to his main instrument yet! One of the most skilled drummers I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. He knew what he was doing, and loved doing it, and he only did it because he loved it. That's pure talent right there. Stacked up against some of the greats of all-time, I'm not sure he deserves the number 1 spot (he idolized Mike Portnoy for a reason, guys) but he has definitely earned a right to be in the discussion.
Honestly no one can play like The Rev. And to tell you the truth I can't listen to any other music besides A7x 's first albums, and that's just to listen to the Rev because his style amazes me and one day HOPEFULLY (along with long hours/years of practice) some of that amazingness will rub off on me. Jimmy is my inspiration to always keep practicing the drums. I listen to him play everyday on my way to work, lunch, and way back home blasting some Sounding the seventh trumpet songs or anything with the Rev, Just to hear how awesome he makes the band sound. I don't know I know everyone has their personal opinion but you don't need to be a A7x fan to say the rev is a great drummer/singer (his voice is flippin amazing! )/pianist, that just shines out naturally from him when he performs. All in all I do believe James Sullivan is number 1 on this list and I will always regret not ever getting to meet the one drummer I fell in love with.
I've looked at the comments with Shannon Leto. Nobody has any actual reason why he's so good. I've never heard Shannon Leto play a tricky beat. Let's hear him play Scream. Can he do that? I bet not. The Rev is a complete drummer. Capable of play hardcore/screamo music, alternative metal, and avant-garde metal. Shannon Leto just makes extremely simple beats. I've listened to his music. Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, John Bonhom, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, and Danny Carey should all be above this newbie

REV FOR NUMBER ONE!
He was so creative, such a great drummer, such a great musician. He could play the bass, the electric guitar and piano as well as writing lyrics and composing string sections for Avenged Sevenfold. I fell he is such a great drummer as he can fit any style, for example he can do fast double bass techniques like Beast and the Harlot and he can do more melodic pieces in Seize the day. Not to mention his work with Pinkly Smooth was just genius - he really deserves to get more credit. FoREVer
I've been listening to A7X for a while now, and recently I've found my self admiring the Rev's drumming and in doing so I've been wanting to see just where he stands in the drumming community. I was sure I'd find a best drummer list as I'd expect him to be one of if not the best drummer of all time. Jimmy's talent with this drums deserves nothing less than 1st place in my opinion. His drumming inspired many people and man did he rock the drums.
-RIP Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan-
James Sullivan is truly a genius. He is by far the best drummer from our generation. He never copied anything he has done but simply continued to make more. He is the inspiration for so many people who are musicians or dream to one day be. You will always hear people talking about how amazing he is. Go on a marine base and you will find plenty of hardcore avenged sevenfold fans. RIP James Sullivan "The Rev" you left too soon - AvengedLover4591
Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan wasn't just a drummer, he was a drummer with skill. He was a GOD at the double-bass. I don't think anyone can replace this genius. He was the one who wrote "Almost Easy", all the guitar riffs, singing, and drumming. That's amazing for a drummer to do that. Long live the GOD of drums. May "The Rev" forever rest in peace. - bruceee15
Now I love this guy, he was amazing and had a great presence. Listening to his drumming, you already know that he had amazing talent as a drummer. And not only was he drummer, he was a vocalist of another band (Pinkly Smooth) and sang a lot of parts of Avenged Sevenfold's songs as well. So you can see he is also well rounded. However, I would just like to say that Mike Portnoy was his idol for a reason... - xSpartanXx
He was the best person in the whole world! He was not just a drummer, but he played the piano, the guitars, he knew how to sing (and his voice was so beautiful! ) and lot of other stuff. And, he was not just Avenged Sevenfold drummer, he and the guys were best friends, like brothers. So.. I think Jimmy deserves this more then anyone.
Jimmy is my hero and he will always be. I love him with all my heart and I admire him. He put everything he had into his drumming, and he's without doubt the best drummer in history. No one can top him. He will always be my favorite, he will always be my hero and he will always be in my heart. He deserves to win this.
I love you, James Owen Sullivan, foREVer.
The Rev was a genius. He wasn't just a drummer. He wrote songs, he had an awesome voice, he played also piano and bass. Most people know him from Avenged Sevenfold, but he also played in band Pinkly Smooth, where he was a drummer and a lead vocalist. Songs like Afterlife, Almost Easy or A Little Piece of Heaven are amazing. For me Jimmy is the most inspirational and talented drummer of all time. RIP The Rev.
god I love this guy he is the best drumer ever came on earth if he wasnt dead right now and if he continued to play drums I thing he could be well now he is also a legend but if he continued playing he would be even better! he was so talented... we will miss you jimmy... I wish god gave us back the rev and we would give him justin bieber...!
jimmy was something unique, that's the only word. he was my inspiration, my roll model. he is the reason I want play the drums, my motivation. he is simply special. when he plays he simply blows my mind completely. he doen't play the same stuff over and over again, he always coms up with new stuff. he definitely deserves first place no doubt abou it. - xXeLiAzXx
