Biggest Canadian Sporting Events of the 1990s

The biggest events of the 1990s in major league and world sports to happen to Canada or Canadian Teams or Athletes.

1 1996 - Donovan Bailey wins Gold in the 100m sprint. (Summer Olympics)

Bailey won the Gold Medal at the Atlanta Games, setting a new world record (at the time) of 9.84 seconds.

2 1992 - The Toronto Blue Jays win their 1st World Series (MLB)

Toronto becomes the first Canadian and non-American franchise to win the World Championship title in Baseball. (Remember the up-side-down Canada Flag in Atlanta?)

3 1993 - The Montreal Canadiens win the Stanley Cup (NHL)

The last Canadian team to win Stanley Cup and they did it against Wayne Gretzkys L.A. Kings. Montreal also wins an NHL record 24th Championship.

4 1993 - The Toronto Blue Jays win their 2nd World Series (MLB

They repeat as champions. This was the series won by Joe Carters game winning homerun.

5 1990 - The Edmonton Oilers win the Stanley Cup (NHL)

After trading away Wayne Gretzky, no body thought the team would be able to compete at the same level. Under the leadership of Mark Messier they won anyways.

Wayne Gretzky wasn't as good without his old team.

6 1994 - Wayne Gretzky scores his record breaking 802nd goal (NHL)

Breaking his idol Gordie Howes long time record of 801.

7 1995 - The Toronto Raptors & Vancouver Grizzlies debut (NBA)

Canada has their first two NBA franchises since the 1947 Toronto Huskies.

8 1997 - Jacques Villeneuve wins the F1 Drivers Championship

Villeneuve became the first and only Canadian driver to date to lead F1 in Driver Points with 81. He won 7 races and 10 poles.

9 1998 - Ross Rebagliati wins Gold Medal in snowboarding. (Winter Olympics)

Ross was awarded the Gold Medal in snowboardings first appearance at the Winter Olympic. There was a bit of a scandal; his Medal was taken away, then given back despite testing positive for THC (The chemical in Marijuana).

10 1992 - Canada takes home 4 Gold Medals and 1 Bronze in Rowing (Summer Olympics)

Having tons of rivers and lakes finally pays off!

11 1996 - Team USA beats Teams Canada in first World Cup of Hockey.

The United States upset the heavy favorite to win the tournament and they did in on Canadian soil. This was the start of a beautiful rivalry. Canada took revenge at the Salt Lake City Olympics.
