The Contenders: Page 2
Played by a very young Clint Eastwood.
A grouchy, serious, straight-laced sheriff henpecked by his wife and married to his job, poor Edward doesn't catch a break in this movie, being robbed, sent falling through a bridge and, like all of Eli Wallach's other Spaghetti Western characters, nearly hanged.
Wallach's keen turn as the sheriff is a welcome break from typecasting as the lovable outlaw type and shows his versatility as an actor.
A cunning and crafty outlaw of Swiss-Italian descent.
He's an underrated fellow, probably because he's just a retread of another character, Tuco Ramirez. To an extent, that's true. But Caco is slightly smarter, has a craftier look in his eye, and is kinder, gentler and quirkier than his counterpart. He has more weight and sadness in his eyes, but still a lot of charm.
A really cool character we honestly could have gotten to know more about.
Sorry, Dollars Trilogy fans... I kinda like him better than Blondie. His story is the same a s Blondie's. He comes into a town and gets rid of the corruption by pitting the two gangs against each other. He's much more interesting in that he's more or less friends with one of the gangs, and that he actually gets something close to a love interest. Blondie/Joe expressed some attraction towards Marisol, but when he found she was married with a child, he viewed her a bit more platonically. We haven't seen him with any romantic interest in women.
It's implied with Django that he had someone, but he'd "lost her forever", and is about to do so with the woman in this film. So his situation affects him much more personally.
Also, he's a former Union soldier. You don't get cooler than that.
Friendly, sharp and charismatic. A rare heroic role from Christoph Waltz.
While Tuco had as much screentime as he pleased to develop into a fully-rounded, compelling, interesting character, the Union Captain, played by Aldo Giuffre only needed one scene. He went from comic drunk to tragic and desperate figure in less than twenty minutes.V 1 Comment
Just as bad morally as the other characters in the film, yet somehow she's so much more likable. Maybe because she's constantly beaten up by the other characters so it's hard not to feel sorry for her.
