In 1932, he replaced Rogers Hornsby and became temporary manager of the team, but that would change as he led the team to a 37-18 finish and won 90 games and won the National League pennant and in the process became a pernament manager of the team, and before his manager career ended, he led the Cubs to 2 more pennants and a place in Chicago lore.

A right handed pitcher, won 239 games during major league career that also included St. Louis and Cincinnati N.L. and clubs in F.L. First major leaguer to pitch four consecutive shutouts, achieving this feat on June 15, June 25, July 2 and July 4 in 1908.

Won 328 games lost 175 pct .652 led league with 55 victories in 1885 (Including 10 shutouts) 38 in 1887, 49 in 1888 and 49 in 1889. Had 2013 strikeouts in 4514 innings.
