The Contenders: Page 2

21 Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
22 Forever and Ever, Amen - Randy Travis
23 Jambalaya (On the Bayou) - Hank Williams
24 Hey Won't You Play Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song - B.J. Thomas
25 Coat of Many Colors - Dolly Parton

You said you couldn't decide between this and I Will Always Love You. Why not have both? Anyway, this is a lovely song which I very much doubt would sound right by any other artist. - Britgirl

I couldn't agree more. These songs are great to me, and that so many seem oblivious to them only serves to bring them up in my view. I would also agree Country has largely became something other than the music we respect. There are a few exceptions, but they are too few. I'm going to maybe go outside the parameters I originally intended for this list and add a couple songs that came later, but I feel the artists tried to stay true to the origins of Country. By the way, I think Randy Travis is a great example of this. - Ned964

You're right, this song just wouldn't sound right to me coming from anybody else. If memory serves, I believe Dolly wrote this because her Mother actually did make her a "Coat of Many Colors", and if that's right, what a wonderful look into Dolly' s life... - Ned964

26 Good Hearted Woman - Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson

Willie, Waylon and this song... What's not to love? - Britgirl

27 A Boy Named Sue - Johnny Cash

Of course. Why didn't I think of this - Ned964

28 On the Road Again - Willie Nelson
29 Coal Miner's Daughter - Loretta Lynn

Some nice additions T. I will go with this one today, but it's close... - Ned964

30 I Recall a Gypsy Woman - Don Williams

So many wonderful songs to choose from by one of my favourite country singers. I chose this one because it was playing when I learned he'd passed away. I still miss him. - Britgirl

31 Heroes and Friends - Randy Travis

@Ned964 re your comment about Randy Travis: Exactly a reason I chose this man. He's one of the few "modern" country artists who actually 'keeps it Country' Heroes and Friends is my favourite by him. Beautifully sung with simple, meaningful lyrics. - Britgirl

So are you, D. So are you. - Britgirl

32 Wabash Cannonball - Boxcar Willie
33 Harper Valley P.T.A. - Jeannie C. Riley
34 Snowbird - Anne Murray
35 Ain't Nothing to Me - Johnny Winter

I had to go listen to this, and realized I had somehow never heard it before. I'm so glad you posted it, it's really really good. I was expecting something in the vein of Edgar Winter, who I'm fairly familiar with. Not at all, this is great Country... I always, try to keep an open mind, because it's people like you that brighten up my day by leading me to music I never would have heard otherwise. I've long since learned the benefits of keeping an open mind, especially with music. - Ned964

36 Lovesick Blues - Hank Williams
37 Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell
38 My Maria - B.W. Stevenson
39 El Paso - Marty Robbins
40 500 Miles Away from Home - Bobby Bare

Hardly anyone mentions Bobby Bare. So...I love this by him. - Britgirl
