Top Ten Comic Book Superheroes

"A superhero is a fictional character who is noted for feats of courage and nobility and who usually has a colorful name and costume which serve to conceal their true identity, and abilities beyond those of normal human beings.

The word superhero originated with Superman, who debuted in 1938, and the stories of superheroes - ranging from episodic adventures to decades-long sagas - have become an entire genre of fiction that has dominated American comic books and crossed over into several other media." This is a list of the most popular comic book superheroes.
The Top Ten
1 Batman Batman aka Bruce Wayne is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, and first appeared in Detective Comics #27. In film, he has been portrayed by Lewis Wilson, Robert Lowery, Adam West, Michael... read more

I think Batman is one of the two superheroes (Spider-Man being the other) who have the most compelling stories of why they became crime fighters. Young Bruce Wayne saw his parents killed right before his eyes because of a dysfunctional law and order system. He became the Dark Knight of Gotham to fill in that void and to make sure that there wouldn't be another child in Gotham losing a mother or father. Both his and Spider-Man's stories are deeply personal and thus relate to many who want to make a difference in a dysfunctional world.

2 Spider-Man Spider-Man is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics existing in its shared universe. The character was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and writer-artist Steve Ditko, and first appeared in the anthology comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962) in the... read more

Peter is a boy with a good heart. He is one of the most emotional characters of all time and always blames himself for the death of his uncle. He is smart and has a strong heart. People like J.J. Jameson declare him as hideous and negative all the time, but he doesn't care. All he knows is that he must help anyone who is helpless and innocent.

I really liked an issue where he doesn't catch an old thief simply because the thief reminded him of his Uncle Ben. He truly loves his Uncle Ben and his Aunt May. Even when he's fighting criminals, he still manages to find the closest phone booth to call Aunt May. That's our beloved Peter Parker - the boy next door.

3 Superman Superman is a comic character. And probably the first powerful superhero in the fictional world. The character was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, high school students living in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1933. It was published by DC comics. The first animated superhero movie was superman... read more

Superman is the best hero ever. He is the face of the Justice League and its strength. All members have accepted the fact that without Superman, there would be no Justice League. Once, when Superman wanted to quit the Justice League, Green Arrow on behalf of the entire team said, "The world needs the Justice League, and the Justice League needs you, SUPERMAN." Every other hero, including Batman, has an ego problem, but Superman is far from any such feeling. He always fights for the truth. He is a true personality to learn from. Without a doubt, Superman is the first and best superhero ever.

4 Wolverine Wolverine is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, commonly associated with the X-Men. His powers and abilities include a healing factor and his signature adamantium claws and adamantium skeleton.

Wolverine is one of the most unique superheroes of all time. I mean, come on, this guy should be second on the list. He isn't the joking type like Spider-Man, and he isn't a cheesy type like Superman or Captain America. This is the guy who comes to a fight with his claws OUT. And he's older than Xavier, has healed back from the point of death about a thousand times, and his bones are coated in indestructible metal. Did I forget to mention that?

Maybe he isn't the best ever, but he definitely deserves to be above SUPERMAN. Superman is a boring superhero because he has no dark side, he's too OP, and he isn't interesting to read about because he has no depth. He's just one-dimensional. So maybe Wolverine doesn't deserve to be number one, but there's no way we can let him be below Superman.

5 Iron Man Iron Man is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, as well as its associated media. The character was created by writer and editor Stan Lee, developed by scripter Larry Lieber, and designed by artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby. He made his first appearance... read more

His extreme intelligence and mastery of war strategies make him epic. He stands out as a superhero because someone like him is the least likely to become one. Typically, rich and cool people don't become heroes. Yet, this guy is an exception. He's stronger than most of the Avengers, with the exceptions being Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Doctor Strange. However, with his entire collection of armors, he surpasses them all. Although many of them were destroyed in Iron Man 3, he has the potential to rebuild. He also mentored Spider-Man, who is second on this list. He is truly an exceptional hero.

6 Captain America Captain Steven Grant Rogers, most known as Steve Rogers or Captain America, is a fictional superhero appearing in the American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He was a World War II veteran and is known as the world's first superhero. The character was created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon and... read more

Captain America is the hero that makes Superman look weak. First, Steve Rogers has a personality and limits, making him more interesting than many DC characters. He was the First Avenger, and he deserves that title. Steve sacrificed himself to save America, and more broadly, the world. He never anticipated being put into hibernation. He faced it with dignity. He DOES NOT rank below Batman, who merely possesses wealth and gadgets. While Superman continually saves the same woman and derives his power from the sun and other similar stars, Steve knows he is mortal, yet he continues to fight.

7 The Hulk Robert Bruce Banner, also known as The Hulk or Bruce Banner, is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and was portrayed by Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Hulk is the strongest one there is. This is because as a fight progresses, he never gets tired, and his strength increases as he gets angrier. Essentially, Hulk's power is unlimited. I've never seen any being quite like him, and I've been a fan for 18 years now. He is, and always will be, "The Strongest One There Is!"

Storylines are important, and Hulk's storyline is off the charts. Hulk has character and can display it when necessary. He is strong and incredibly brave. Hulk would never back down from a fight. His strength is so immense that it's almost frightening.

8 The Flash The Flash is the name of several superheroes appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert, the original Flash first appeared in Flash Comics #1.

I appreciate the Flash, whether it's Barry Allen or Wally West, not just for their speed, brains, or quips (though those are all admittedly great). I like them for who they are at their core. They're among the friendliest, nicest, and most polite superheroes, second only to perhaps Superman and Captain America. I'm not referring to the new TV show since it has altered his personality. I'm talking about the comics. Barry is thoughtful and genuinely loves people. He's affected deeply when anyone dies, regardless of how well he knew them. That's what makes him a hero. He continually strives to be better.

9 Green Lantern Green Lantern is the name of a number of superheroes appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics.

One of my favorite heroes is not just great because he can glow, fly, and defeat villains using his imagination - although that is certainly appealing. What draws me to Hal, Kilowag, Guy, John, Kyle, and the rest of the Corps is what they stand for. They serve as cosmic law enforcement, protecting as many beings as possible, often at great personal cost. If you've read any of their comics, you'll see that they face almost as many challenges as the Bat-Family. They are in charge of an aspect of the emotional spectrum and yet answer to the Guardians, beings who neither believe in nor condone emotion.

Hal frequently takes the brunt of the damage for whatever team he's on, whether it's the Justice League or the Corps. Kyle had the enormous task of pulling the entire Corps out of its low point, largely on his own. John and Guy have made significant sacrifices as well, including giving up loved ones and even becoming members of the Red Lantern Corps. Then there are the numerous other sacrifices: Coast City was destroyed, Parallax shattered lives, Kilowag tested Hal's readiness by forcing him to nearly beat him to death, John was compelled to kill another Lantern named Mogo, and Kyle was willing to die to protect the universe but ended up sacrificing all the entities of the emotional spectrum to rejuvenate it. These sacrifices make the Green Lantern Corps one of the most respected and awe-inspiring organizations in comic book history.

Even if you're not a fan, you have to acknowledge their merits. They're not just stubborn. They're genuinely admirable. If you haven't given them a chance yet, I highly recommend that you do. They're worth your time and respect. And if you can, try to overlook the unsuccessful movie adaptation. Instead, watch one of the cartoons or read JL8. You'll come to love the characters soon enough.

10 Thor Thor Odinson is a fictional superhero appearing in the American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character, based on the Norse mythological deity of the same name, is the Asgardian god of thunder and possesses the enchanted hammer Mjolnir, which grants him the ability of flight and weather... read more

Thor is by far better than most of the heroes before him, including Batman, Superman, Cap, Iron Man, Green Lantern, the two Indian heroes, and the Hulk. He should at least be in the top 10. He's so awesome and can beat the Hulk any day.

Thor is incredible. He's powerful and unique among other heroes. It's extremely fascinating and intriguing that no other physical human being can lift his hammer. It's just awe-inspiring.

Look him up if you don't know him. Thor has been a very well-rounded character. You can't even explain the power and depth of character he possesses.

The Contenders
11 Wonder Woman Wonder Woman is a fictional superhero created by William Moulton Marston and Harry G. Peter, appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character is a founding member of the Justice League, a goddess, and Ambassador-at-Large of the Amazon people. In her homeland, the island nation... read more

None of the above can kick her @$$ - quite the opposite. She could beat all of them without much effort, Superman, Thor, Hulk excepted, but she could take them, too. She is a demi-god, daughter of Zeus and Hippolyta. Her lasso is indestructible and capable of mind control. If anyone is ensnared, they're done.

Wonder Woman has to be the best superhero because she's so different from all the other superheroes. First off, she is bisexual, which makes her stand out from the others. Next, she is made of clay, so she's not a real human.

12 Deadpool Deadpool is a fictional antihero created by Marvel who appears in their comics. Deadpool's first appearance was in New Mutants #98 by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza in February of 1991. His powers include self-healing and super strength. He is regarded as one of the funniest characters in comics due... read more

He's the best: the funniest hero, and he can't die. He's cursed from death and often breaks the fourth wall. No one tops Deadpool. The only ones who even come close are Batman, Hulk, and Green Arrow.

You've never heard of Deadpool? That's surprising. Some people can't determine whether his powers are for good or evil, or even understand his motivations. It's worth discovering more about him.

He messes with the minds of his enemies as much as he does with his allies. When paired with Alex Hayden, you're in for a whirlwind of nonsense and mayhem.

13 Goku Son Goku (Kakarrot) is the main protagonist in Dragon Ball franchise created by Akira Toriyama in 1984. He has many abilities like, super strength, utilization of ki, flight, teleportation, super speed, enhanced reflexes, and Super Saiyan transformation that increase strength, speed, and durability... read more

Goku can not only destroy planets but also the entire universe. When he was fighting with God Beerus, everyone said that they would destroy the universe if they continued to fight. His instant transmission arguably makes him the fastest superhero. Even Flash might not beat him in speed. He could use this technique to defeat Superman in seconds, taking him near a red sun, at which point the game would be over for Superman. His Spirit Bomb, drawing power from all of nature, is perhaps the strongest attack. There seems to be no limit to a Saiyan's power. In fact, he is a Super Saiyan God! And let's not forget the Kamehameha. The only one who might have an upper hand against Goku could be Galactus. But Goku held his own against the God of Destruction, Beerus, who might defeat Galactus. When considering only superheroes, Goku seems unbeatable.

14 Green Arrow Green Arrow is a fictional superhero who appears in comic books published by DC Comics. Created by Morton Weisinger and designed by George Papp, he first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 in November 1941. His real name is Oliver Queen, a billionaire businessman and owner of Queen Industries, also a well-known... read more

Oliver Queen should be in the top five. He is better than any other powerless superhero and is even better than some powered superheroes.

You must watch the Arrow T.V. Show, and then you should think about which superhero you will vote for.

He's the best archer in comics! A modern Robin Hood, an emerald archer, and the best battling bowman, he's the Green Arrow!

15 Rorschach Rorschach is a fictional anti-hero who appears in American comic books published by DC Comics. He first debuted in the graphic novel Watchmen, published from 1986-1987. Rorschach was created by writer Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

He's a truly unique and dynamic character. His morals are unlike any other comic book hero. Seeing the contrast in his behavior with Daniel compared to everyone else is so interesting. His one rule is another thing that makes him stand out from all other heroes. It isn't based off warped self-righteousness like Batman's. He even chose to die rather than stray from his one rule.

He's the best hero, with a real conscience. So much so that even in the face of death (he eventually died), he had the courage to stand up against his old friends. Standing up against your enemies is one thing, but standing up against your friends takes another level of conviction.

16 Nightwing Dick Grayson is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, commonly in association with Batman.

Nightwing should rank higher. He's an intriguing character who we've had the pleasure to watch evolve from an orphaned nine-year-old to the incredible character we now recognize as Nightwing. He's Batman's oldest and most loyal ally and even took up the mantle when Bruce was missing. His impressive acrobatics and light-hearted way of fighting are a joy to watch. Not to mention, his on-again/off-again relationship with Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) is another significant aspect of the character. Nightwing is exceptional and deserves a higher spot on this list.

17 Punisher The Punisher is a fictional antihero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by writer Gerry Conway and artist John Romita, Sr., with publisher Stan Lee green-lighting the name.

When you need someone to get the job done, you call the Punisher. Most superheroes will imprison the villains or send them to some other fantastical place from which they'll inevitably escape. Therefore, a straightforward kill is often the most effective solution.

The salesperson says, "If you need to punish your kids, Punisher can do the job! Just call 466-1905 and Punisher will come the next day! But you might want to be in a different room. It can get messy." The crowd backs away in fear and runs away screaming when Punisher steps out. "Ah! LOL!" Though that would be funny, it would never happen. Nor would I let Punisher even touch my two beautiful children. ~Ravenwing. P.S. Punisher is not bad at all, just... rough. He's boss.

18 Daredevil Daredevil is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Daredevil was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett, with an unspecified amount of input from Jack Kirby... read more

Deadpool is a good superhero because, unlike Superman and Vision, he is actually human and can get hurt. Therefore, he is more relatable than an actual god.

Daredevil is good, especially Frank Miller's run. It needs a movie.

He beats thugs constantly, not even looking at the target!

19 Spawn Spawn is a fictional character, an antihero and hellish Superhero that appears in a monthly comic book of the same name published by American company Image Comics.

Spawn is a favorite. Kudos to Image Comics. He's the superhero I turn to every time.

Spawn is exceptional, especially since he is self-reliant in defeating evil, and being Canadian, which is a rarity.

Spawn was granted his powers by the devil and uses them to fight evil. Badass!

20 Aquaman Aquaman is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, the character debuted in More Fun Comics #73.

Nobody cares about Aquaman. Or should I say, KING Aquaman. Who can have a pleasant conversation with a great white shark without getting torn to pieces? Let's face it, can you breathe underwater or control the seas? Most likely not. Also, a whole team came together, The Others, consisting of allies of Aquaman. I hope at least someone reads this. Of course, this is just my opinion, and you do not have to agree. But does Iron Man or the Hulk have a water-blasting trident? Methinks not.

Aquaman is the quintessential underrated superhero. He does much more than just communicate with fish. He's both the guardian and the king of the entire sea. Moreover, his strength is comparable to Superman's, and he has a notable set of allies, including his sidekick Aqualad, his wife Mera, the Justice League, and, of course, his pet walrus, Tusky.

21 Human Torch The Human Torch is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.
22 Robin Robin is the name of several fictional superheroes appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was originally created by Bob Kane, Bill Finger, and Jerry Robinson, to serve as a junior counterpart to the superhero Batman.

Guys! Why did you put Robin here? He is pretty awesome and cool. He is the only sidekick in comic books that never fails.

He's the sidekick of Batman, The Boy Wonder. Also home to 5 regular people.

He needs to be ranked higher. There's no way Beast Boy and Raven are ahead of him.

23 Vegeta Vegeta is an anime fictional character from the anime series, Dragon Ball Z, created by Akira Toriyama.

Vegeta is badass. Goku is the strongest, and Vegeta has beaten him before.

24 Doctor Strange Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange, best known under his alias Doctor Strange, is a fictional superhero created by artist Steve Ditko and writer Stan Lee appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Doctor Strange serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical... read more

Doctor Strange needs to be ranked higher. He's super cool.

25 Ghost Rider Ghost Rider is the name of several fictional supernatural antiheroes appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

He is as strong as Deadpool and Wolverine because he is also immortal like them. However, the difference between them is his speed, which comes from his impressive motorcycle. He has a chain that he uses as a weapon and can burn people's souls. He deserves a higher ranking than 30th place.

The most badass-looking superhero EVER? A flaming skull, leather jacket, motorcycle with wheels on fire, plus god-like powers? You can't top any of that.

This guy can match up with most superheroes. Vote for him or face the Penance Stare!
