There is no denial, that Sweden and Finland have to be at the Top of this list. They've put out the greatest melodic death metal bands, while I think Swedens MDM bands are more essential. From Blackened MDM to Progressive MDM Sweden has everywhere one of the best MDM bands in my opinion.

The United States have the greatest Old-School Death Metal bands in my opinion, but what about Melodic Death? Well.. its actually not that bad there. There are quite a lot good bands, they aren't that popular though.

Yes, I agree - Quo Vadis is my favorite, too, because they put some technical elements.
Also Into Eternity, especially their Stu Block era - Timeless Winter, Severe Emotional Distress, Tides of Blood, Time Immemorial, Pain Through Breathing.

Canada also some great gems in its Melodic Death Metal scene. Especially "Quo Vadis" is an hell of a band.

After Sweden and Finland its very difficult to pick a 3rd favorite.. but I decided to go with Japan. Rather little known, but the Melodic Death Metal scene isn't that small actually and it has some really great gems! There is a slightly different vibe to the sound than in european or american MDM, what I really appreciate.

Of course Carcass is one of the biggest names in MDM, but don't hesitate to check further. Bands like Bloodshot Dawn are incredible!

Bratwurst, Kraut and Melodic Death Metal. The metal scene in Germany is one of the biggest in the world and the melodic death metal outputs are also pretty neat.
