There is no denial, that Sweden and Finland have to be at the Top of this list. They've put out the greatest melodic death metal bands, while I think Swedens MDM bands are more essential. From Blackened MDM to Progressive MDM Sweden has everywhere one of the best MDM bands in my opinion.

Finland is my uncontested number 2 here. For fans of more power metal influenced melodic death metal this might choice number 1. Also Doom influence is more present than in Sweden, I guess.

The others are very good, too.

The United States have the greatest Old-School Death Metal bands in my opinion, but what about Melodic Death? Well.. its actually not that bad there. There are quite a lot good bands, they aren't that popular though.

After Sweden and Finland its very difficult to pick a 3rd favorite.. but I decided to go with Japan. Rather little known, but the Melodic Death Metal scene isn't that small actually and it has some really great gems! There is a slightly different vibe to the sound than in european or american MDM, what I really appreciate.
