Top 10 Cover Songs Better Than the Original

201 When the Indians Cry - Vanilla Ninja

The original song is a ballad by British singer Chris Norman from his 2001 album "Breathe Me In". This song never was a hit anywhere in the world and was more like a filler song on the album. It sounds rather corny and cheesy to be honest with an unintentionally racist title. It tries so hard to be a heartbreaking ballad, that it eventually turns out cheap.
Vanilla Ninja's 2004 reincarnation was a single from their album "Traces of Sadness" and a big hit in some European countries. It turns the cheesy pop ballad into a folk inspired stripped down piece that gets more intense and rock-ish as it goes on. In the beginning the guitar takes up most of the song's instrumental. Later, more and more instruments get added, first soft percussion such as shakers, then more dominant drums, ultimately electric guitars including a solo. And of course Lenna Kuurma's and Maarja Kivi's wonderfully rough voices that make this sound more honest than the original. - Martin_Canine
