@visitor - I had in mind the heavier/harder sounding spectrum of rock music! I would like to add that Ritchie started the relevant experiments in bands before Deep Purple.

Things are logical though: Ritchie Blackmore was a Jeff Beck fan and Yardbirds fan. I know that Ritchie did at least 3 different cover versions of Still I'm Sad by Yardbirds. And while the original isn't metal, Ritchie's instrumental cover is (he did it with Rainbow). Ritchie didn't only make the sound heavier but he also removed the blues elements from the original. The Rainbow versions with both Dio and D. White on vox are pretty cool, too. - Metal_Treasure

The guy from Deep Purple who started writing heavier sounding rock songs based on classical music, now known as heavy metal. Everybody else with more or less heavy sound wrote rock songs based on blues (circa 1970). So Ritchie Blackmore changed revolutionary the rock music paradigm in its heavier spectrum as well as the stylistic origins of hard/heavy rock music by adding classical music. In terms of creativity, he is #1 for me and will always be. - Metal_Treasure

Incorrect, Justin Hayward and John Lodge were including classical at least 3 years before that in 1967 for the Moody Blues, and it could be argued that huge classical fan Jeff Beck started including it in Yardbirds work as early as 1965.
