Top 10 Death Note characters who where against Kira / Light Yagami. Note that during the period Light had no memory of him being Kira, he began helping L to pursue Kira, so at that brief time the characters who were/and supported Kira (Higuchi and the Yotsuba Group) were the antagonists instead of the protagonists.

Though this is one thing awesome about death note. Unlike the crappy moral stories we are fed all the time, here protagonist does not equal good guy, and antagonist does not equal bad guy. In fact, that distinction of 'good' and 'bad' is made blurred throughout the series (Though I've only yet made it till episode 23 by now. You may say why the hell am I voting for L when I haven't even seen the other characters. Truth is, nothing can be better than L. Its not for anything he's considered one of the greatest anime characters of all time)

Being the antagonist doesn't mean you're the bad guy, your just fighting against the main character! And by the way L is my favourite character.
Technically everyone aside from Light, Ryuk, Misa, Takada and Mikami are antagonists in the anime.

Nate River, exclusively known by the mononym Near, is a fictional character in the manga series Death Note, created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. I like L but I do not relate to him as much as I do with Near. Near is my favorite characters (besides Light) because he is so interesting to watch - from his analytical skills, strange thinking-methods and habits, or just his philosophy and wisdom. Near is extremely serious, unlike most children, yet he still plays with toys (in a stimulating way of coarse). I can't exactly describe what I like about Near but I can describe him as being an old child in a teens body.
I never liked L as much as the other fans did but I did really like Near. Near was a very serious-looking analytical character. Thanks to him (and Mello) they revealed and killed Kira. Although, I do think Mello is a bit useless, he did contribute a few of his skills.
Top antagonist (against Light) because he actually managed to get Light and get him killed (curses to you Near! I hope you died a painful death! )
