He was killed in an accident while leading the 1994 San Marino Grand more.

At the time of his death, he was found with an Austrian flag, which he had planned to fly (against the rules, too) to honor the life of Roland Ratzenberger, who died the previous day (22 years ago TODAY based upon when I've written this comment)
