Top 10 Greatest Decades for Rock MusicTimTamTheTurtleMan Rock music is one of the most popular forms of music of the 20th and 21st century. Many great and inspirational artists/bands have came and gone, shaping the world of rock music as we know it. Question is, what decade gave birth to the greatest artists?
The Top Ten
I was split between 1970s and 1980s and I do think classic rock was at a peak through them both, but the 1980s also brought with it a lot of rap and synth-pop crap. Some notable songs from this era:
Stairway to Heaven
We Will Rock You
Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way
Man On the Silver Mountain
Don't Fear the Reaper
Need I list more? Because it only goes on...
Between the likes of Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and Styx releasing some of their best material, it's hard to imagine a better decade for the rock and roll scene than this one.
This was the classic time for classic rock. There wasn't one mediocre year for rock in the whole decade. Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd led the way while older artists, like the Rolling Stones and the Who, hit their peaks. The decade almost became synonymous with good rock. - TangyTiger

Ever heard of Grunge?
Most of my favorite bands either formed out or hit their peaks in this decade. These bands include Nirvana, RATM, RHCP, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, you get the idea.
U2, Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses, you get the idea. Older bands like The Rolling Stones still put out top tier rock music (“Start Me Up”). Although Zep wasn’t around, you still have great rock with U2 leading the way.
About half the bands listed as 70's bands are actually 60's bands, and as the title line says, the 60's "gave birth to" Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, etc, etc, and they were extremely popular then. But they were all overshadowed by the Beatles, and no other band was going to be "biggest in the world" as long as they were together. The 60's ruled by far.
Yes, but for all the bands listed in the 70s, they belong in the 70s because that was when they were in their PRIME. They were only getting started in the 60s. - TimTamTheTurtleMan
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, the Yardbirds, Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Elvis Presley [started in 50's], The Who, Janis Joplin, the Moody Blues, Creedence Clearwater, many, many more. It's not close.
My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, Coheed and Cambria, Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, and a ton of other bands made this one of the best decades for rock music.
Emo, Scene & Goth!
The start of rock n roll and the best!
Come on, this should be higher. The fifties is the decade where rock started, exploded worldwide, when Rock was rebellious, dangerous etc..
Seriously? Remove it right now.
