Most Depressing Albums

Throughout history some of the greatest art has been inspired by tragedy, hardship, sorrow and loss. This is a list of such albums. Which "dark" album is your favorite?

The Top Ten

1 The Wall - Pink Floyd The Wall - Pink Floyd Product Image

This album is just so depressing. It starts off bad with hearing the plane crashing at the end of the first song, signifying the death of Pink's father and it all just goes downhill from there. And being that this album is at least partially based on Rodger Water's life, it just makes the first few songs all worse. And near the end, Pink becomes a leader of an organization resembling the force that destroyed his father and 80 million other lives. Sure, Pink may have knocked down his wall but nothing can undo the people he has harmed.

Just the thought of Pink growing up to gain fame and fortune, but is not able to enjoy any of it. He isolates himself from society and his life falls apart. He starts a riot and hurts so many people.

This album can really bring you down. It contains some of Pink Floyd's greatest songs. I kind of like the album because of its brilliant material but if you want to get into it, don't listen to it every day or you will begin to feel like the main character Pink.

Ok Computer can get enough votes to pass this up but there is no denying that this album is the best. It actually has a main character, the story flows together extremely well that none of the songs are good alone. Top that Radiohead!

2 The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails Product Image

Trust me. I've gone through a downward spiral for four years! And I some how survived...

The Downward Spiral is the darkest thing I've ever heard.

Haha This album is a good introduction to astronomy

This album and it's name pretty much describes my life.

3 OK Computer - Radiohead OK Computer - Radiohead Product Image

Ok, I went to far on my comment on the wall. I didn't really like this album until I listened to it again this afternoon. Then I saw it's true brilliance. There isn't a single week spot on this album. It also has a very comforting feel to it. Perfect to listen to to bed. It's also a very exhausting listen. I felt like a whole long day had gone by but really, it had just been about 50 minutes! By the time I got to the last couple of tracks, I felt like I could doze off. It's s brilliant, beautiful, yet desperately sad masterpiece. After that, I probably can't listen to this for another year.

Beautifully melancholy piece of work.

Needs to be higher

4 Dirt - Alice In Chains Dirt - Alice In Chains Product Image

How is this not in the top 10?

5 In Utero - Nirvana In Utero - Nirvana Product Image

By depressing, do you mean beautiful?

6 Back to Black - Amy Winehouse Back to Black - Amy Winehouse Product Image

Some tracks aren't that dark but the whole atmosphere of the album is deeply sad. Anyway, the album is a masterpiece!

7 Violator - Depeche Mode Violator - Depeche Mode Product Image

Deep and original lyrics made it all!

8 Alice in Chains - Alice in Chains Alice in Chains - Alice in Chains Product Image

Dirt is pretty depressing, but there are rays of sunshine every now and then. With this album it's all storm clouds. Can't believe I had to add it.

This album is great, but extremely dark. That's what makes it awesome though

9 Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) - Marilyn Manson Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) - Marilyn Manson Product Image
10 Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath Product Image

The Contenders

11 Demons & Wizards - Demons & Wizards Demons & Wizards - Demons & Wizards Product Image
12 Antichrist Superstar - Marilyn Manson Antichrist Superstar - Marilyn Manson Product Image
13 Epicus Doomicus Metallicus - Candlemass Epicus Doomicus Metallicus - Candlemass Product Image
14 Superunknown - Soundgarden Superunknown - Soundgarden Product Image

I mean, one of the songs (the best on the album actually) is called "The Day I Tried to Live", for crying out loud.

15 Mechanical Animals - Marilyn Manson Mechanical Animals - Marilyn Manson Product Image
16 21 - Adele 21 - Adele Product Image
17 Kid A - Radiohead Kid A - Radiohead Product Image

This is the most depressing album of all time for sure. I don't even think its close. I have depression and no other form of music comes close to depicting the terrible feelings of depression. This album is a free form album which is extremely experimental but every song is so heartbreaking and sad that this is definitely the most depressing album of all time. This album is not one to help someone get through depression though, it kind of shoves you back down into depression. Coldplay is better for healing depression as far as music goes as well as Twenty One Pilots. I still love Radiohead and it is my favorite band even though they are the most depressing band of all time.

I love this album! It was created to welcome us into the 21st century. It introduced new electronic elements that will influence artists all through the century. The whole album is bleak, sad, dystopian, and dark. This isn't the type of album to listen to on your Monday to start the day. Or even everyday listening. It's an album to reflect upon, and go to every once and a while. If you hadn't listened to Kid A, make sure you do before 2100. Hopefully then, we will get Another Kid A, and hopefully another Radiohead.

18 Dummy - Portishead Dummy - Portishead Product Image

Dark... But still one of the greatest albums ever!

19 Boys for Pele - Tori Amos Boys for Pele - Tori Amos Product Image
20 The Marshall Mathers LP - Eminem The Marshall Mathers LP - Eminem Product Image

Eh it has its dark passages but not all tracks are depressing.

21 A Crow Looked at Me - Mount Eerie A Crow Looked at Me - Mount Eerie Product Image

This, Giles Corey and Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness should be in the top 3. This list is just full of mainstream albums that are somewhat melancholic

You Will Never Hear Anything This Raw and Emotional Than This Beautiful, Stripped Down Album. A True Masterpiece

22 Korn - Korn Korn - Korn Product Image
23 Blue - Joni Mitchell Blue - Joni Mitchell Product Image

Master-work of the 70's. Joni released many great albums but this one is her main trophy!

24 Low - David Bowie Low - David Bowie Product Image

What can I say? This album is a masterpiece!

25 Hospice - The Antlers Hospice - The Antlers Product Image

I'm glad I found it on this list. This is the most depressing album I know. It still breaks my heart

The only time I've actually cried from music
