Most Depressing Albums

Throughout history some of the greatest art has been inspired by tragedy, hardship, sorrow and loss. This is a list of such albums. Which "dark" album is your favorite?

The Top Ten

1 The Wall - Pink Floyd

This album can really bring you down. It contains some of Pink Floyd's greatest songs. I kind of like the album because of its brilliant material but if you want to get into it, don't listen to it every day or you will begin to feel like the main character Pink.

2 OK Computer - Radiohead

Beautifully melancholy piece of work. - Alexandr

Needs to be higher

3 The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails

Trust me. I've gone through a downward spiral for four years! And I some how survived...

Haha This album is a good introduction to astronomy - Alexandr

The Downward Spiral is the darkest thing I've ever heard.

Story of my life...

4 Back to Black - Amy Winehouse

Some tracks aren't that dark but the whole atmosphere of the album is deeply sad. Anyway, the album is a masterpiece! - Alexandr

5 Violator - Depeche Mode

Deep and original lyrics made it all! - Alexandr

6 In Utero - Nirvana

By depressing, do you mean beautiful?

7 Dirt - Alice In Chains

How is this not in the top 10? - Alpha101

8 Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) - Marilyn Manson
9 Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
10 Demons & Wizards - Demons & Wizards

The Contenders

11 Alice in Chains - Alice in Chains

Dirt is pretty depressing, but there are rays of sunshine every now and then. With this album it's all storm clouds. Can't believe I had to add it. - IronSabbathPriest

12 Dummy - Portishead

Dark... But still one of the greatest albums ever! - Alexandr

13 Epicus Doomicus Metallicus - Candlemass
14 Blue - Joni Mitchell

Master-work of the 70's. Joni released many great albums but this one is her main trophy! - Alexandr

15 Antichrist Superstar - Marilyn Manson
16 Mechanical Animals - Marilyn Manson
17 Superunknown - Soundgarden
18 Boys for Pele - Tori Amos
19 21 - Adele
20 The Marshall Mathers LP - Eminem
21 Low - David Bowie

What can I say? This album is a masterpiece! - Alexandr

22 Kid A - Radiohead

This is the most depressing album of all time for sure. I don't even think its close. I have depression and no other form of music comes close to depicting the terrible feelings of depression. This album is a free form album which is extremely experimental but every song is so heartbreaking and sad that this is definitely the most depressing album of all time. This album is not one to help someone get through depression though, it kind of shoves you back down into depression. Coldplay is better for healing depression as far as music goes as well as Twenty One Pilots. I still love Radiohead and it is my favorite band even though they are the most depressing band of all time.

23 Korn - Korn
24 The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance

Super depressing

25 In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel

The best album of all time. - kanoife

26 Rubber Soul - The Beatles
27 Innuendo - Queen

Seriously? Black Sabbath? Rubber Soul? None of those albums are depressing in the least. (Except for "In My Life" but the rest of the album's pretty upbeat). This on the other hand, is the laments, life questions, and final hurrahs of a man dying of AIDS. How can anything be more depressing than that?

28 Animals - Pink Floyd

If you listen to just one song on this album, it isn't depressing at all. But, if you listen to the entire thing, you get a cold dark feel which makes this a pretty depressing album. I would say this is tied with The Wall (In my opinion).

My father had this album on 8 track and he listened to it quite a bit. But he was depressed for some reason and he found out, it was by listening to Animals so he quit listening to it and he felt better.

It really depends on how you interpret this album. The whole album wasn't that bad but Dogs was kind of heavy. After hearing Dogs, the feeling I got was carried on through the entire album. But like I said, it depends on the person. Some people really like this album. Either way, it's a masterpeice.

29 Hospice - The Antlers

The only time I've actually cried from music

30 Giles Corey - Giles Corey

While Dan Barrett's other popular project, Have A Nice Life, has some pretty depressing albums under their belt, this is his saddest yet. Incredibly slow, dirge-like songs with heavily reverbed vocals singing about death and the afterlife lead this singer/songwriter album down an incredibly dark path. The fact that the project name is based off of Giles Corey, the man during the Salem witch trials who didn't plead and, as a result, was executed by pressing, doesn't help.

31 Berlin - Lou Reed

This list would be empty without this album - Alexandr

32 Revolutionary Vol.1 - Immortal Technique
33 Closer

I find it completely insulting that a Beatles album is above this beautiful but wonderfully depressing album. The Beatles have depressing songs, but none of them can rival this album as a whole. - JudgmentOfTheSun

34 The Glow, Pt. 2 - The Microphones
35 Adore - The Smashing Pumpkins
36 Ten - Pearl Jam
37 American Life - Madonna
38 Seventeen Seconds - The Cure
39 The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails
40 Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

WHAT? No, Wish you Were here is not deppressing.

41 The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash
42 The Velvet Rope - Janet Jackson
43 Tidal - Fiona Apple

Her greatest and the most depressing album! - Alexandr

44 To the Faithful Departed - The Cranberries
45 No Angel - Dido
46 Year Zero - Nine Inch Nails

Another dark album by NIN - Alexandr

47 Begin to Hope - Regina Spektor
48 Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette
49 Bury the Hatchet - The Cranberries
50 Come Away With Me - Norah Jones
