Most Depressing AlbumsThroughout history some of the greatest art has been inspired by tragedy, hardship, sorrow and loss. This is a list of such albums. Which "dark" album is your favorite?
The Top Ten
Just the thought of Pink growing up to gain fame and fortune, but is not able to enjoy any of it. He isolates himself from society and his life falls apart. He starts a riot and hurts so many people.
This album can really bring you down. It contains some of Pink Floyd's greatest songs. I kind of like the album because of its brilliant material but if you want to get into it, don't listen to it every day or you will begin to feel like the main character Pink.
Ok Computer can get enough votes to pass this up but there is no denying that this album is the best. It actually has a main character, the story flows together extremely well that none of the songs are good alone. Top that Radiohead! - Slipperyjack40
Trust me. I've gone through a downward spiral for four years! And I some how survived...
Haha This album is a good introduction to astronomy - Alexandr
The Downward Spiral is the darkest thing I've ever heard.
Story of my life...
Ok, I went to far on my comment on the wall. I didn't really like this album until I listened to it again this afternoon. Then I saw it's true brilliance. There isn't a single week spot on this album. It also has a very comforting feel to it. Perfect to listen to to bed. It's also a very exhausting listen. I felt like a whole long day had gone by but really, it had just been about 50 minutes! By the time I got to the last couple of tracks, I felt like I could doze off. It's s brilliant, beautiful, yet desperately sad masterpiece. After that, I probably can't listen to this for another year. - Slipperyjack40
Beautifully melancholy piece of work. - Alexandr
Needs to be higher
How is this not in the top 10? - Alpha101
By depressing, do you mean beautiful?
Some tracks aren't that dark but the whole atmosphere of the album is deeply sad. Anyway, the album is a masterpiece! - Alexandr
Deep and original lyrics made it all! - Alexandr
This album is great, but extremely dark. That's what makes it awesome though
Dirt is pretty depressing, but there are rays of sunshine every now and then. With this album it's all storm clouds. Can't believe I had to add it. - IronSabbathPriest
I mean, one of the songs (the best on the album actually) is called "The Day I Tried to Live", for crying out loud. - truckturner
This is the most depressing album of all time for sure. I don't even think its close. I have depression and no other form of music comes close to depicting the terrible feelings of depression. This album is a free form album which is extremely experimental but every song is so heartbreaking and sad that this is definitely the most depressing album of all time. This album is not one to help someone get through depression though, it kind of shoves you back down into depression. Coldplay is better for healing depression as far as music goes as well as Twenty One Pilots. I still love Radiohead and it is my favorite band even though they are the most depressing band of all time.
I love this album! It was created to welcome us into the 21st century. It introduced new electronic elements that will influence artists all through the century. The whole album is bleak, sad, dystopian, and dark. This isn't the type of album to listen to on your Monday to start the day. Or even everyday listening. It's an album to reflect upon, and go to every once and a while. If you hadn't listened to Kid A, make sure you do before 2100. Hopefully then, we will get Another Kid A, and hopefully another Radiohead. - Slipperyjack40
Dark... But still one of the greatest albums ever! - Alexandr
Eh it has its dark passages but not all tracks are depressing. - JoLeKosovo
This, Giles Corey and Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness should be in the top 3. This list is just full of mainstream albums that are somewhat melancholic
You Will Never Hear Anything This Raw and Emotional Than This Beautiful, Stripped Down Album. A True Masterpiece
Master-work of the 70's. Joni released many great albums but this one is her main trophy! - Alexandr
What can I say? This album is a masterpiece! - Alexandr
I'm glad I found it on this list. This is the most depressing album I know. It still breaks my heart
The only time I've actually cried from music
While Dan Barrett's other popular project, Have A Nice Life, has some pretty depressing albums under their belt, this is his saddest yet. Incredibly slow, dirge-like songs with heavily reverbed vocals singing about death and the afterlife lead this singer/songwriter album down an incredibly dark path. The fact that the project name is based off of Giles Corey, the man during the Salem witch trials who didn't plead and, as a result, was executed by pressing, doesn't help.
I find it completely insulting that a Beatles album is above this beautiful but wonderfully depressing album. The Beatles have depressing songs, but none of them can rival this album as a whole. - JudgmentOfTheSun
The best album of all time. - kanoife
If you listen to just one song on this album, it isn't depressing at all. But, if you listen to the entire thing, you get a cold dark feel which makes this a pretty depressing album. I would say this is tied with The Wall (In my opinion).
My father had this album on 8 track and he listened to it quite a bit. But he was depressed for some reason and he found out, it was by listening to Animals so he quit listening to it and he felt better.
It really depends on how you interpret this album. The whole album wasn't that bad but Dogs was kind of heavy. After hearing Dogs, the feeling I got was carried on through the entire album. But like I said, it depends on the person. Some people really like this album. Either way, it's a masterpeice.
Your not goth if you don't cry while listening to this album
Seriously? Black Sabbath? Rubber Soul? None of those albums are depressing in the least. (Except for "In My Life" but the rest of the album's pretty upbeat). This on the other hand, is the laments, life questions, and final hurrahs of a man dying of AIDS. How can anything be more depressing than that?
This list would be empty without this album - Alexandr
THIS is the most depressing Radiohead album without doubt. Its opener contains the essence of this entire psychotic album. Even the cover is depressing!
WHAT? No, Wish you Were here is not deppressing.
How is this not in the top ten? This truly is the saddest album I've ever heard.
At least put it at number 11.
Most of the songs on here were inspired when Adam was arrested for Oxycontin addiction.
One of the greatest albums ever..
This should absolutely be higher. - Soulstealer
This is depression utterly captured. Nothing bright. Nothing pleasant. It's just purely gloomy. The epitome of a "depressing album".
Can't connect with it though because I'm a super happy guy yet I wis Earl well. - JoLeKosovo
