Top 10 Most Depressing Albums

Throughout history some of the greatest art has been inspired by tragedy, hardship, sorrow and loss. This is a list of such albums. Which "dark" album is your favorite?
The Top Ten
1 The Wall - Pink Floyd

This album is just so depressing. It starts off badly with the sound of a plane crashing at the end of the first song, signifying the death of Pink's father, and it all just goes downhill from there. Being that this album is at least partially based on Roger Waters' life, it just makes the first few songs all the worse. Near the end, Pink becomes the leader of an organization resembling the force that destroyed his father and 80 million other lives. Sure, Pink may have knocked down his wall, but nothing can undo the harm he has caused to people.

2 The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails

A mostly violent and disturbing album that tells a very sad story of someone's rapid decline. The end track is a contender for the saddest song I've heard given the album's events.

Trust me, I've gone through a downward spiral for four years! And I somehow survived...

The Downward Spiral is the darkest thing I've ever heard.

3 Dirt - Alice In Chains
4 Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) - Marilyn Manson
5 Back to Black - Amy Winehouse

Some tracks aren't that dark, but the whole atmosphere of the album is deeply sad. Anyway, the album is a masterpiece!

6 OK Computer - Radiohead

Ok, I went too far in my comment on The Wall. I didn't really like this album until I listened to it again this afternoon. Then, I saw its true brilliance. There isn't a single weak spot on this album. It also has a very comforting feel to it, perfect to listen to before bed. It's also a very exhausting listen. I felt like a whole long day had gone by, but really, it had just been about 50 minutes! By the time I got to the last couple of tracks, I felt like I could doze off. It's a brilliant, beautiful, yet desperately sad masterpiece. After that, I probably can't listen to this for another year.

7 Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
8 Violator - Depeche Mode

Deep and original lyrics make it all!

9 Antichrist Superstar - Marilyn Manson
10 Demons & Wizards - Demons & Wizards
The Contenders
11 In Utero - Nirvana

By depressing, do you mean beautiful?

12 Mechanical Animals - Marilyn Manson
13 Kid A - Radiohead

This is the most depressing album of all time, for sure. I don't even think it's close. I have depression, and no other form of music comes close to depicting the terrible feelings of depression. This album is a free-form album, which is extremely experimental, but every song is so heartbreaking and sad that this is definitely the most depressing album of all time. This album is not one to help someone get through depression, though. It kind of shoves you back down into depression. Coldplay is better for healing depression, as far as music goes, as well as Twenty One Pilots. I still love Radiohead, and they are my favorite band even though they are the most depressing band of all time.

14 Spiderland - Slint
15 The Marshall Mathers LP - Eminem
16 Boys for Pele - Tori Amos
17 The Glow, Pt. 2 - The Microphones
18 Jar of Flies - Alice in Chains
19 In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
20 Dummy - Portishead

Dark... but still one of the greatest albums ever!

21 21 - Adele
22 A Crow Looked at Me - Mount Eerie

You will never hear anything this raw and emotional than this beautiful, stripped-down album. A true masterpiece.

This, Giles Corey, and Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness should be in the top 3. This list is just full of mainstream albums that are somewhat melancholic.

23 Adore - The Smashing Pumpkins
24 Rubber Soul - The Beatles
25 Blue - Joni Mitchell

Masterwork of the 70s. Joni released many great albums, but this one is her main trophy!
