Top 10 Drummer Showdowns

The Top Ten

1 Mike Portnoy vs Mike Mangini Michael Portnoy is an American drummer primarily known as the former drummer, backing vocalist, and a co-founder of the progressive metal/rock band Dream Theater. Known for his technical skill as a drummer, Portnoy has won 30 awards from the Modern Drummer magazine.

Portnoy is my favourite drummer of all time! And when he left Dream Theater, they chose an excellent replacement with Mangini. This would be interesting! - IronSabbathPriest

I'd love to see that. Great drummers. I personally think Mike Mangini wins by a tiny bit. - Metal_Treasure

Portnoy is the best Prog Metal Composer ever

2 John Bonham vs Neil Peart

In terms of technical skill, Peart wins. In terms of being able to hit the right notes at the right time, Bonham wins. Both drummers are awesome! - IronSabbathPriest

Can play bonham with relative ease. Very groove based and repetitive.. Peart is much harder for me to copy

Definitely Neil Peart.

@IronSabbathPriest - I'm afraid I don't understand something: What does it mean Bohnam is 'able to hit the right notes at the right time'?

You think Neil Peart doesn't hit the right notes at the right time? Bad timing? - Metal_Treasure

3 Nicko McBrain vs Travis Scott Michael Henry "Nicko" McBrain is an English musician, best known as the drummer of the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, which he joined in 1982.

Two talented drummers in two of the most successful british bands of all time. I'd love to see this. - IronSabbathPriest

4 Dave Lombardo vs Lars Ulrich

The godfather of the double bass drum VS one of the main songwriters in Metallica? This should be interesting. - IronSabbathPriest

5 Nick Menza vs Shawn Drover

Nick hangs down

Two of the drummers in Megadeth. Nick Menza was awesome, and I wish Shawn Drover and Chris Broderick didn't have to leave the band. - IronSabbathPriest

6 Vinny Appice vs Bill Ward

Both drummers are instantly recognisable, and were both in the first heavy metal band, our very own Black Sabbath! - IronSabbathPriest

7 George Kollias vs Francesco Paoli

I wanna see some really crazy metal drumming and the guys who play like that:

George Kollias: Nile - The Essential Salts
Francesco Paoli: Fleshgod Apocalypse - The Violation - Metal_Treasure

8 Dave Lombardo vs Jürgen Reil
9 Gene Hoglan vs Igor Cavalera

Love individual thought patterns.. He is the first drummer I heard using his feet like hands.. Switching between triplet and 32nd notes midstream

10 Nick Mason vs Bill Bruford

King Crimson make the list yet again! And Pink Floyd simply NEED to be on any rock band list. Both drummers are quite underrated in the bands they are/were in. - IronSabbathPriest

The Contenders

11 Dave Lombardo vs Paul Bostaph
12 Dave Grouhl vs Phil Campbell

I don't know who would win this. Dave Grouhl says that Motorhead are the coolest band ever. Which they are. But Dave's performing in Nirvana and QOTSA is exceptional. - IronSabbathPriest

Maybe you wanted to say Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor and not Phil Campbell, who is a guitarist in Motorhead.
And Phil Taylor wins. Dave Grohl is quite overrated, to be honest. - Metal_Treasure

13 Joey Jordison vs the Rev

Although I have no respect for Avenged Sevenfold, I have respect for The Rev. And I won't say I'm glad that he died. Jordison is still better though. - IronSabbathPriest

14 Bill Ward vs Ian Paice
15 Vinnie Paul Abbot vs Simon Wright

Run out of ideas again. Both great drummers. - IronSabbathPriest
