Top Ten Questions About Electronic Music to Ask People

Electronic music spans a lot of styles and expressions, from the bone-chilling basslines of chillstep to the heavy and rapid dance vibes of psytrance; from the heartfelt mourning of Sleep Alone to the empowering reflections of Blind Faith. Within the electronic culture, there are a lot of things that people love or hate, as there are so many things that inspire them and motivate them. So let's give a comparison of these types in the questions below.
The Top Ten
1 Skrillex or Deadmau5?

These are two world-recognised DJs, and I see them compared all the time. I, for one, don't see why. Their musical styles are little alike, and they have very different personalities. But if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. So I say, deadmau5 wins, hands down. I more than respect deadmau5 for his music, I adore it. He commits more to making new styles of music with every album, often using elements that rarely go together, and the lyrics to his pieces are often thought-provoking, from the detraction from reality and widespread loss of human nature in both Ghosts n' Stuff and Professional Griefers to the empowering and effective attitudes to tackling hardships in both I Remember and Seeya. Deadmau5 is one of the most inventive and authentic musicians of today. Skrillex, however, I dislike. He dissolves the diversity of the genre of dubstep, and generalises it in the media. To most, dubstep equals the repetitive and bland sound that Skrillex has made global. To those who are only familiar ...more

I obviously pick deadmau5, only because he's my favorite electronic artist. And he's a great musician. Shrillex, eh, I'm not a fan of him.

Very difficult choice, but I'll have to go with Deadmau5.

No doubt skrillex is best than deadmau5

2 Mainstream or Underground Dubstep?

Please, please, PLEASE SAY THE LATTER. Mainstream dubstep deforms the idea of dubstep, often to the point of it being separate from music. Dubstep started as very diverse and unique, and it still is, but the lowest point of it has been popularised, generalised and broken. If you focus instead on Electus, Au5, Gemini, Bassnectar, Rogue and several others, your view of what dubstep can be is bound to be different. These musicians do a lot that's different from the mainstream scene. Electus is one who is repeatedly outdoing himself, with some cinematic elements in some places, some downtempo elements in another. This is the kind of dubstep I appreciate.

Depends on your definition of Mainstream. I suppose that means a Skrillex level of popularity, so I guess I choose underground. As people have already mentioned in the comments here, melodic dubstep producers like Au5, Seven Lions, Illenium, Said the Sky, etc. are amazing.

Underground Dubstep. Mainstream Dubstep is just generic made just to make money. A tragedy for the whole Dubstep scene. Benga, Horsepower Productions, Skream, Distance, D1, Cotti, ClueKid, Horsepower Productions, Ghost, Digital Mystikz, Caspa, Rusko, old Loefah and Skream among many others are the real.

Underground of course. Illenium's melodic dubstep is quite good. Other than that, Seven Lions and Au5 are also producers to give a chance to!

3 Tiësto or Armin van Buuren?

Two prominent figures on the trance scene, each much larger than life. I really like them both, so this is a very difficult decision to make for any fan of trance. But my mind is set on Armin. Tiësto has done a lot to impress me, with a huge range of rapid and addictive beats that keep me coming back, and has done some very fine collaborations with artists outside of his box, and has made some unlikely but highly recommended remixes. It was his remix of Moby's We Are All Made of Stars, an original favourite of mine, that got me into trance music. But Armin van Buuren is just something else. Armin is much more diverse when it comes to his music, from the mind-numbing beat of Full Focus to the psychedelic earthquake of Save My Night. I often find that the lyrics to his songs have kept me going when I'm down, as well. What's more, Armin extends into more subgenres of trance altogether, and does a lot to promote more diverse aspects of the genre, including some artists that few know. ...more

I think I slightly prefer Armin.

4 Moby or Röyksopp?

Their musical styles are vastly different: Moby focuses on downtempo and ambient, but also techno; Röyksopp focus on IDM and chillout synth music. They each strive to make authentic and soulful sounds in large quantity, and never fail to meet their standards. But it's more than that. It's the fact that these people are poets in music, making heartfelt and poignant pieces. They have each written pieces about questioning our origins, gambling with death, losing rights to war and to love. Their music often makes you stop and think about your life, and I have learned a lot from both of these artists. I adore Röyksopp, especially for outdoing themselves with The Inevitable End, but not even they connect with me like Moby does. Moby's music gives happiness in despair, in a fashion that is solely a quality of Moby. There is no artist that gives me the same feeling, let alone consistently, and I cannot stress that enough. Not to mention, even some of his unreleased tracks are masterpieces.

Moby, by a narrow margin.

I'll have to pick Moby.

5 Random Album Title or For Lack of a Better Name?

Ignoring the bizarre titles, these are each legendary albums by the mighty deadmau5, which have formed the popular joint album: For Lack of a Better Album Title. I'm listening to the latter as I type this list, and I'm loving the contrasts from Ghosts n' Stuff to Strobe. But I prefer Random Album Title, for the progressive house vibe of I Remember, the electrohouse beat of Not Exactly, the trance tune of Faxing Berlin, and I find that I come back to this album for the shuffled thrills more often.

While FLoaBN has Ghosts n' Stuff and Strobe, RAT feels like the better complete album to me, along with having I Remember.

6 Electrohouse or Progressive House?

House music spans a lot of subgenres, and some are soppy and poppy, like acid and deep house, but a lot of it is fantastic, and these are the two subgenres which I adore the most. Progressive house is radical; a powerful, melodic, rapid beat that spans deadmau5 to Morgan Page, but I prefer electrohouse; whether it's for a funky and sudden tempo change or a beautifully executed bass line and drop, it pulls me further into house music as a whole.

I like progressive house slightly more

7 Wait For Me or Destroyed?

Both are highly underrated Moby albums, even amongst fans of Moby. Wait For Me is an album which I find to be built on the feel of isolation, from the heartfelt Pale Horses that considers how the lives of many are frequently turned upside down, to the loss of love and pleasure in Mistake. Destroyed has similar sounds, but I find its content to be yet more striking. Instead of originating and remaining in this stance, it breaks it down, and leaves the feeling barren and taken aback. Destroyed also has a larger range of music, being both upbeat and atmospheric, and the video for Lie Down In Darkness is easily the most surreal music video that I have seen. I'm not just saying that. Thus, I choose Destroyed.

8 Dubstep or Drum & Bass?

The two forms of electronic bass music that are progressive, fluctuative and heavy. I enjoy many sounds from both of these genres. Drum n' Bass is something which I find to be more quick-paced, and is good for exercise, but the underground dubstep which I listen to is more surprising, more dynamic and more energising, contrasting with the deep feeling and prosperity obtained from chillstep. Thus, I choose dubstep.

I personally like dubstep better. The dnb kick snare pattern usually distracts me, although I'd listen to it sometimes because of the energy it gives you.

9 Industrial or Techno?
10 Electronic Rock or Industrial Rock?
The Contenders
11 Bleed or Strobe?

These two deadmau5 songs have been tagged as the most beautiful pieces of electronic music in the media. Strobe was at the top since its release, but Bleed came out recently and challenged that. But truth is, they're very different. Strobe has a calm synth, a melodic trance and prog-house mix, and echoing transactions between these phases. Bleed has a calm bass and an eerie, trickling sound that gets under you and lifts your stress from you. It's a tough call, but I find that it depends on my mood. Strobe is perfect for getting me ready when I'm exhausted, and calming myself when I'm crazy; Bleed is ideal for chilling out and getting me to sleep. Each one is a priceless piece of my collection.

Bleed in my opinion.

12 Is it Good or Bad?

I feel like this is a double edged sword cause, in my opinion, Electronic music takes the least amount of effort to make but on the bright side, some of it sounds awesome

It depends on what you're listening to. Some, like Brian Eno's ambient, is incredible. But then you get Skrillex's "Bangarang".

Yes. Electronic music is such a broad umbrella of unique genres that there is bound to be something for everyone.

It's good, if you can find them.

13 Daft Punk or The Prodigy?
14 Downtempo or Ambient?

These are very similar chillout genres. Ambient music is good for creating an entirely new atmosphere, often dark and haunting, but also mind-soothing and soporific. Downtempo adds more of a rhythm to ambient, and it too works wonders in a similar fashion, but it has the ability to be lyrical without compromising its tone, and it was downtempo that made me love electronic music. I think I've made my preference clear.

I think with the definitions that PositronWildhawk gave, I prefer downtempo.

15 Muse or Nine Inch Nails?
16 Skinny Puppy or Front Line Assembly?
17 Zedd or Calvin Harris?

I'll take Zedd any day over Calvin Harris, even after Zedd sold out.

18 Kraftwerk or Brian Eno?

I'd have to say Kraftwerk. They were originators, on a whole new level.

19 Jean-Jacques Perrey or Daft Punk?
20 Brostep or Glitchstep?

Glitchstep. Brostep is good but gets really repetitive while glitchstep tends to be really creative.

21 Leftims or Shaking the Habitual?
22 Lean On or Hey Mama?

That would be like saying if poop is better than vomit.

23 Orchestrion 1805 or Helmholtz Sound Synthesizer C. 1890?

I would answer this question if I knew anything about analog synth models.

24 Feed Me or Knife Party?
25 Deadmau5 or David Guetta?
