Overview of My Time on TheTopTens in 2017

Well, since the year is coming to a close, I thought I'd share with all my friends and followers a little overview of my time on this site during 2017. I talked somewhat of my experience on TheTopTens in another post called "TheTopTens: My Story," but here I'm going to go more in detail about what this year has been like for me, as well as talk about what I wish to accomplish in 2018. Without further ado, let me recap my time on this site for 2017.

I joined TheTopTens in late July of 2016. Prior to that, I was a member of the site WDWMagic named Kate F, and the first half of the year, I was incredibly active on the site. However, for whatever reasons, I gradually started to become less active and came upon TheTopTens, a site I'd come across multiple before but never thought to join. I started thinking about all the lists I could make and then I ultimately the decision to become a user. I had a few accomplishments in 2016, but I didn't really stick out too much overall and not very many people messaged me or anything like that. I was just kind of a user that was "there," but wasn't anything special. 2017 was a better year for me as a user in pretty much every aspect.

I didn't accomplish as much as I wanted to this year, I had a lot of things planned out that never happened, both in real life and online, but sticking with online, I wanted to make more lists and posts than I did and I ended up procrastinating. Of course, being in college, I'm also busy during certain times of the year, but I think I could have squeezed in a few more lists/posts if I utilized my free time wisely. I know I don't have a ton of content, but this year I've really started to care about the quality of my lists and to me, it feels better to put out a list I worked really hard on than just making a list of 10 items and throwing it out there like I used to do. So while I don't have a lot, I want what I do have to be good. Sometimes it pays off, such as my first ever featured list, Top 10 Worst Rides at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando. It was about a topic I really enjoy, I worked extremely hard on it, and it became a huge hit that people really appreciated. Other times, content I worked hard on goes virtually unnoticed and makes me wonder if it was even worth the time and effort to make it. That aside, I've still made it a personal goal to make sure the content I'm putting out is quality even if it ends up under the radar, and I plan to carry this goal with me into 2018.

This year was a big year for me as far as community goes. Before 2017, I only talked with a few users and most people didn't really know me all that much. Early this year, however, I became more acquainted with this site's users and even made some new friends, such as DCfnaf. I don't really have any close friends in real life and am incredibly unsocial, so it was really nice having some people to chat with. The biggest thing that got me more involved with the community would have to be BAND. Even though a lot of nasty drama went down on there, I probably wouldn't be as close with some users if I never joined and it made me feel like I was truly part of the community. I now have people I message on a regular basis and have become really good friends with, something I never thought would happen in my first few months on the site. While the community has some bad eggs of course, there are a lot of good eggs to counteract the bad, and overall, I have to say that I enjoy being a part of the TTT community.

This site had a few major changes in 2017 and my opinions on them vary. I'm a big fan of the notifications under the messages, it is very convenient and was by far the best change to the site this year if you ask me. My least favorite change would probably have to be disabling thumbs down for comments. It's not that big of a deal to me overall, but to me, it's just going a bit overboard in trying to keep the site perfectly positive. I won't go into much detail on that though. The biggest change was the change to the profiles, which I'm really mixed on honestly. I don't really like the new update photo feature or the overall layout, but it is easier to find what you're looking for, such as old comments and posts. I don't know, I just find the change unnecessary as a whole and think it was fine the way it was before, but that's just me.

I started a post series this year in which I review Disney and Universal rides, of which I only managed to get two posts completed, even though I planned to have one weekly, it just didn't happen. I'm going to continue it again real soon, and I plan for 2018 to be a very post-heavy year for me. One of my favorite things to talk about is travel and vacationing, and we're taking a trip out to Orlando next year, last trip there was in 2015, so I'll probably want to write about it here, as well as any other trips we decide to take. I also think I might start another post series sometime next year, but I'll go into more detail about it when the time comes.

Overall, 2017 has been an interesting year for me as a user and I'm curious as to what 2018 has in store. As much as I think this was a good year for me, I think I could have done a bit better, and I hope to be much more productive next year. Maybe it could be a breakout year for me, who knows?
