Top Ten Fantasy Book Series

The Top Ten

1 Harry Potter - JK Rowling

Yes. Harry Potter's the greatest fantasy story ever told. It has dragons, hippogriffs, unicorns, three-headed dogs, werewolves, vampires, and much more. My seven favorite Harry Potter characters are Hermione Granger, Rubeus Hagrid, Severus Snape, Luna Lovegood, Minerva McGonagall, Nymphadora Tonks, and Ginny Weasley.

Hermione's great because she's compassionate, loyal, independent, super duper smart, and brave. She may seem like a bossy know-it-all at first, but Hermione proves to be much more than that. She turns into a beautiful, amazing witch. Hermione's also a female and a main character, which makes me love her even more. She is my idol. Tons of times, Hermione saved Harry and Ron from danger. Without her, Buckbeak the hippogriff would've been murdered, Harry and Ron would have suffocated in the Devil's Snare, and Sirius Black would have been thought still a murderer. So Hermione is just plain awesome.

I like Hagrid because he's one of the most kind-hearted and ...more

Ha no crap Harry Potter wins, best series of all time an the most profitable. Jk Rowling sure knows how to write a good book without making it seem ridiculous. Lord of the rings is a very close second, I think they should tie actually. The writing is complex for some people in LOTR, but I love it - dragonfly99

Harry potter winns

There is no competition. Although Artemis Fowl is pretty awesome too, and Rick Riordian's books too.

2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien

I was split between this and Harry Potter, but what made me choose this is that this made a fantasy story span over the course of thousands of years, while with Harry Potter the timeline stretches about 50 years, I'm not saying Harry Potter is bad,(In fact, it excels in pacing sometimes) but The Lord of the Rings is a massive influence to all fantasy series being released today. While Harry Potter does a good job telling the story about a secret wizarding world, this series creates new races, new languages, and told an incredible story, Harry Potter is still amazing but it dwarfs in comparison to the world created by JRR Tolkien.

Although Harry potter and the others are great as well, I feel as if this book has a sort of magical feeling to it- a feeling I have never felt while reading any other book. Its beauty, its wonder... As I read I felt as though J.R.R. Tolkien poured his entire soul into this, and that the words he had written were straight from the heart. It is so simple, yet so complex at the same time and that often leaves me once again entranced by its beauty. I understand that for some it is a little difficult to read, and I felt that way as well at the beginning. But a few chapters in I found I could not put the book down- it had simply mesmerized me with the imagery, the voice, the tone, the characters and the beauty of all that is Middle-Earth. This book is, in simplest terms, beautiful. I have fallen in love with everything about it, I have felt the love Tolkien put into it. It is one of my biggest inspirations. This elegant fantasy will forever have a place in my heart- it changed me. It ...more

In my Opinion, this should be number one, not Harry Potter (but Harry Potter would deserve a place as number two). Tolkien did not only create a completely new world, but new races, languages and the most wonderful story I have ever seen in my life. Harry Potter is great also, but I am sorry to say, it's nothing compared to Lord of the Rings. - Cookies

These books are what made the future of modern fantasy literature.

3 A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin

This is one of the best fantasy series! The storyline is enormous and intriguing! Once you start reading you can never stop! It has everything.. Dragons, wars, twists and turns and Sex! The characters are well built and you can imagine the picture in your head as you read the book

The masterpiece of masterpieces, a truly extravagant book series, the magnum opus of fantasy novels. Realistic characters, astounding details, and plot arcs that will forever leave you guessing. It rivals, perhaps surpasses such series as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Need I say more?

This Series wins out because of the characters. When you read the specific chapters even though you're reading through Cersei's twisted vision George makes you understand her mentality, he justifies the evil the characters do to the point where you start nodding along and whispering 'Okay I might do the same thing. '

Fantasy for grown-ups. Almost all others in the list are for kids...

4 Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan

The Percy Jackson series is one of the most readable fantasy book out there and is great for both children, young adults and even adults. It not only includes laugh out loud humour but also is a book you can learn a lot from. Personally I learnt a lot about the ancient Greek mythology.

Awesome for all ages! And it was really useful to help me learn about all the Greek mythology for my module on Ancient Greece.

Every turn of the page brought us a new view of the life of the new demigod who discovers his life will forever be a challenge wonderful adventures trials to overcome and excitement at every turn

I love all of Rick Riordans series, they are amazing! This one is my favorite, but the Kane Cronicles and the Hero’s of Olympus are also very good! This book series is so good. I love J.K Rowling to, but RR is way better (in my opinion).

5 The Heroes of Olympus - Rick Riordan

I loved the books so much and I really all rick riordan books the writer is really creative and really did great I really wish he would write about percy going to Egypt since I am an Egyptian thank you so much for putting your time and effort in writing this book
All the love and support from Egypt

The entire Percy Jackson series is better than any book series ever... ! And the Heroes of Olympus is much better than The Olympians, so this should be first and The Olympians second!

The sequel series to Percy Jackson. New characters, new writing style, Greeks & Romans included. Maybe not as good as the first series, but still a good read. I'm waiting to get my hands on the latest book!

I love this book so much! I don’t even know how it’s not first, it’s just so readable and the storyline is so great. You guys actually do not understand how much I love this book I would read it over and over and over again until I die and that is how good it is. You may think I am overreacting a bit but when you read it you will agree! Uncle rick’s books are the best, no doubt. I love Percy Jackson and heroes of Olympus so much there is no better book. But of course Harry Potter has to come first. It’s good but too overrated in my opinion. I think PJO and HOO are under appreciated and you guys should definitely read them! The movies may not be great but the books are 10000000000000000000000000X better. Trust me. Have a good day y’all, and make sure you read this book (the best series of all time)

6 Inheritance Cycle - Christopher Paolini

All the characters are so deeply developed and woven into the amazingly interesting story.

The series has incredible descriptions that make you feel like you're there. A must read series for sure.

One of the greatest books of all times. Deserves to be number1

What? This is one of the worst books ever. He ripped off from lord of the rings and star wars. The only reason he's famous is because of his young age

7 The Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis

I love The Chronicles of Narnia. I cannot believe it is only number seven. Me and my mom began reading the Lion, The With, and The Wardrobe first. It is an amazing book. My favorite character might be Lucy or the White Witch. When we finished that amazing book, we watched the movie, and then we read the Magician's Nephew! I am ten, and these books are so awesome.

They seem like books for little kids, but dig deeper and you'll find lots of profound meaning.

I absolutely love The Chronicles of Narnia! I'm just finishing up The Silver Chair, The NEED to make a movie of that. And soon!

Why is this below inheritance cycle? Chronicles of Narnia is way better then that garbage

8 Fablehaven - Brandon Mull

9 The Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss

Intriguing, captivating, and endearing. You won't be able to put it down.

It's such a great book series. I recommend everyone to read it. Even though the books are thick, you seriously won't be able to put it down. Read it.

Some of the best books I've ever read, and by far my favorite fantasy series.

Captivating and the magic system is great... Everyone loves Kvothe

10 The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

This is Science Fiction or Dystopian Future, not Fantasy.

I agree, Google classifies it as fantasy but I think it's pretty clear it's not. - pandagirl

Not fantasy, good books but not better then any other classics

Brave brilliant darkly beautiful futuristic story of survival loved it

This should be second, after Harry Potter

The Contenders

11 His Dark Materials - Phillip Pullman

If you haven't read these, you're missing out.

Voted here to say THEY ARE MAKING A T.V. SERIES OF THIS IT WILL BE ON THE BBC

12 The Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan

Half the books above this aren't even real fantasy. Jordan created an enormous and beautiful world with this series, and it should go down as one of the classics. I think the only reason it's not higher is because the public's attention spans have dissolved. Most people don't have the patience to read a 14 book series, and it doesn't have a dumbed-down television show or movie

The only reason this is sixteen is because not enough people have read this series.

Why isn't this higher up? - Themattster12

By far the best book series I've ever read. Can't believe it's so low on this list. Hunger games and divergent aren't even fantasy as much as sci-fi/dystopia.

13 Divergent Trilogy - Veronica Roth

This is like one of the best series I ever read in life. Once I started reading the book, I can't let go. I just had to find out what's gonna happen next. This series is like I don't even know what to say it's just so amazing and thrilling.

In my opinion it's better than the hunger games

Divergent was good, Insurgent was boring, and Allegiant just sucked (and not because Tris died). The characters were boring, underdeveloped, and annoying, and although the idea was interesting, the series was not written that great.

Better than the movies

14 The Dark Tower - Stephen King

Why isn't this higher? In fact, why isn't this in the top 5?

Top 3 without any doubt, too many young people missed this series. - ChrisPaulMVP

I have absolutely no idea how this wasn't on here already. - Yoshilord

The best book series ever!

15 Warriors - Erin Hunter

It is amazing! A story that warms your heart with their loyalty for each other. They die for love! They fight, side by side, for what they believe in. Through all the betrayals, they never give up! Beautiful storyline and wording. A work of art. More than just a book. An experience

Just Read it. It's my favorite series of all time and that says a lot since I've read literally thousands of books

Warriors will probably always be my number one favorite book series, I love it SO MUCH

That's amazing series! I love it!
Soon I will read the 6th book.
My favourite characters are Darkstripe (Dunkelstreif), Cinderpelt (Rußpelz), Ravenpaw (Rabenpfote), Brightheart (Lichtherz), Longtail (Langschweif), Mousefur (Mausefell) and Sandstorm (Sandstorm).
"Warrior Cats" is very underrated, but has amazing story, made for cat lovers!

16 The Inkheart Trilogy - Cornelia Funke

Spellbinding series about stories coming to life. Originally written in German.

Spellbinding.

17 Dune - Frank and Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson
18 The Mortal Instruments - Cassandra Clare

This book series should definitely be higher up on the list. It is funny and action packed with unexpected twists and turns. One of my favorite series!

Why is it number seventeen! This is the best book series that I have ever read I couldn't put these books down. It deserves to be much higher on the list!

Why is this series so far down in this series

I'm a HUGE harry potter fan- I mean I've been reading and rereading it since I was seven- so I think saying TMI should be second on the list might be a bit biased of of me.. but it really should. I mean, I got to live the lives of these characters and they became so dear to me that I was literally lost by the time I was done with the series.

19 Seven Realms Saga - Cinda Williams Chima

A wonderful series of magic mystery and love set it a magical world of fantasy a great read epic story line

20 The Door Within - Wayne Thomas Batson
21 The Stormlight Archive - Brandon Sanderson

This is honestly some of the best written fantasy I've ever read. And I've read a good amount. The world and lore is so intriguing and the characters have really good development. You should definitely give these books a shot.

22 Discworld - Terry Pratchett

I love terry pratchett's series! One of the few books that can authentically make me laugh. Very witty humour with very humane themes throughout. Also has the greatest portrayal of Death.

Also, you think Harry potter was the first series to introduce a magical school of wizards? Terry did it way before Rowling, with his Unseen University.

23 The Lost Years of Merlin - TA Barron

Very creative. I heard there's a movie coming out someday soon.

24 The Malazan Book of the Fallen - Steven Erikson

If you have voted for anything else here and haven't read this then read it next.

Maybe not the best ever, but better than the Inheritance Cycle and Twilight. Interweaving plots and mutiple worlds beat cliche dragons and gay vampires.

25 Demon Cycle - Peter V. Brett
26 The Riftwar Cycle - Raymond E. Feist
27 Mistborn Series - Brandon Sanderson

Wonderful author, well thought out story components. He always has very well conceived magical elements. In this series, it focuses on the ability of characters to ingest bits of metal and use them for special powers

28 The Witcher - Andrzej Sapkowski
29 The First Law - Joe Abercrombie
30 Artemis Fowl - Eoin Colfer
31 Ranger's Apprentice - John Flanagan

So much military strategies, accuracy of weapon use, realistic situations, these books are actually believable. Lovable characters like the the kind Will Treaty, Erak the noble viking, Halt the grim ranger and the list goes on. These books are amazing and bring up a new adventure every time that keep you on the edge of your seat. In my opinion, they are tied with Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire. These books deserve to be higher. Please read them if you haven't

How is this 12. Deserves 1 for sure!

I only read one, and I loved it

32 Wings of Fire - Tui T. Sutherland

This is actually what inspired me to write. Therefore, this holds a special place in my heart, and probably always will. - Cyri

My cousin likes Redwall more, but I have the controls, so...bwahaha...WINGS OF FIRE IS AMAZING! ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT! (Harry Potter is better, but it already has enough votes, so...) YEAH! DRAGONS! HILARIOUS! (I totally have no strong opinions, but my cousin does...)

Oh these are wonderful! The plot is amazing, the characters are awesome. Read this saga/series!

Love tsunami and glory

33 The Maze Runners - James Dashner

This series is amazing. I'm readings The Death cure right now

This series's is amazing. I'm reading The Death Cure right now.

Newt is perfect.

34 Redwall - Brian Jacques

This was my intro to fantasy as a kid, and they still haven't lost their charm when I go back and read them now. Each one is an adventure worth taking.

35 The Saga of Darren Shan - Darren Shan

These were the books that marked my teenage years. I've read and re-read them several times

36 The Belgariad - David Eddings

One of the greatest series I have ever read, couldn't put it down

37 The Kane Chronicles - Rick Riordan

Riordan Rocks!

Riordan - Orlemley

38 The Farseer Trilogy - Robin Hobb

One of the most underrated novel ever!

39 The Spooks - Joseph Delaney
40 Bone - Jeff Smith
41 Earthsea - Ursula Le Guin

Loved these books as a young teenager. Much easier to read then some of her other books (such as The Left Hand of Darkness).

This was Harry Potter before Harry Potter, it deserves to be top 10-15 - Eorel

42 Hush Hush - Becca Fitzpatrick
43 The Sword of Shannara - Terry Brooks

Classic high fantasy

44 The Black Company - Glen Cook

Deserves to be higher, this is a great series, the first 5 books or so are very good. - Element119

45 The Dark Elf Trilogy - R.A. Salvatore
46 Dragonlance Legends - Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman

Seriously!? Terrible

47 The Once and Future King - T.H. White
48 The Bartimaeus Sequence - Jonathan Stroud
49 The Dresden Files - Jim Butcher
50 Guardians of Ga'hoole - Kathryn Lasky

I didn't really like this that much. I liked it, but I just liked Warriors and Harry Potter more. I'll try reading further, and I might change my opinion, but for now, Firestar Forever!
