Top Ten Fantasy Book Series

The Top Ten

1 Harry Potter - JK Rowling

Yes. Harry Potter's the greatest fantasy story ever told. It has dragons, hippogriffs, unicorns, three-headed dogs, werewolves, vampires, and much more. My seven favorite Harry Potter characters are Hermione Granger, Rubeus Hagrid, Severus Snape, Luna Lovegood, Minerva McGonagall, Nymphadora Tonks, and Ginny Weasley.

Hermione's great because she's compassionate, loyal, independent, super duper smart, and brave. She may seem like a bossy know-it-all at first, but Hermione proves to be much more than that. She turns into a beautiful, amazing witch. Hermione's also a female and a main character, which makes me love her even more. She is my idol. Tons of times, Hermione saved Harry and Ron from danger. Without her, Buckbeak the hippogriff would've been murdered, Harry and Ron would have suffocated in the Devil's Snare, and Sirius Black would have been thought still a murderer. So Hermione is just plain awesome.

I like Hagrid because he's one of the most kind-hearted and ...more

Makes you brain say LUMOS

There's no competition really, Harry Potter is just so much above everything else

Definitely the best! Everything that you'd expect from a fantasy book is in here. Made up animals (hippogriffs, for example.) Also, there is a lot of magic in this and I appreciate that J.K. Rowling has spent some time thinking about magic spells and creatues. Overall, you should definitely read this at least once in your life as it as an amazing book. And, if you don't like reading, there's always the movie version, starring even Emma Watson! definitely a must read. - kittygirl2

2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien

It's the inspiration for every fantasy series after it including Harry Potter. To not give Tolkien the respect he deserves for this book is baffling. It, not Harry Potter, is the 3rd bestselling book of all time. It, not Harry Potter, created the High Fantasy genre. It, not Harry Potter, is the one fantasy series to rule them all.

Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, they all EXIST because of The Lord Of The Rings.
The One To Rule Them All.

Lol wow LOTR is thousands more complicated that Harry Potter made for children... not even close - BallBall11

Lord is the best

3 A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin

This is one of the best fantasy series! The storyline is enormous and intriguing! Once you start reading you can never stop! It has everything.. Dragons, wars, twists and turns and Sex! The characters are well built and you can imagine the picture in your head as you read the book

The masterpiece of masterpieces, a truly extravagant book series, the magnum opus of fantasy novels. Realistic characters, astounding details, and plot arcs that will forever leave you guessing. It rivals, perhaps surpasses such series as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Need I say more?

This Series wins out because of the characters. When you read the specific chapters even though you're reading through Cersei's twisted vision George makes you understand her mentality, he justifies the evil the characters do to the point where you start nodding along and whispering 'Okay I might do the same thing. '

This is ranked 12 as of April 2013, but in 5 years time it will be number 1. Harry Potter is good, but nothing is more amazing than reading about the Game of Thrones.

4 Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan

Definitely will end up as a classic for years to come. We all Laughed and Cried with these Characters. They made me feel more confident in myself, find the hero inside me, and maybe a tint of romance. These books made me wonder what life would be like as a demigod for me. I know kinda weird, but that's just me.

AMAZING

Why isn't this #1

THIS BOOK IS EPIC IT SHOULD BE number 1 - chubbypanda394

5 The Heroes of Olympus - Rick Riordan

I loved the books so much and I really all rick riordan books the writer is really creative and really did great I really wish he would write about percy going to Egypt since I am an Egyptian thank you so much for putting your time and effort in writing this book
All the love and support from Egypt

The lost hero should be first"!

The entire Percy Jackson series is better than any book series ever... ! And the Heroes of Olympus is much better than The Olympians, so this should be first and The Olympians second!

The sequel series to Percy Jackson. New characters, new writing style, Greeks & Romans included. Maybe not as good as the first series, but still a good read. I'm waiting to get my hands on the latest book!

6 The Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis

I love The Chronicles of Narnia. I cannot believe it is only number seven. Me and my mom began reading the Lion, The With, and The Wardrobe first. It is an amazing book. My favorite character might be Lucy or the White Witch. When we finished that amazing book, we watched the movie, and then we read the Magician's Nephew! I am ten, and these books are so awesome.

Why is this below inheritance cycle? Chronicles of Narnia is way better then that garbage

Narnia gave me a new reason and opened my eyes
For me it’s on the top of the world

They seem like books for little kids, but dig deeper and you'll find lots of profound meaning.

7 Inheritance Cycle - Christopher Paolini

I love these books. Must read!

What? This is one of the worst books ever. He ripped off from lord of the rings and star wars. The only reason he's famous is because of his young age

This is the best siries I read in my life

Deserves first, other than warriors, my fave - Swiftdawn

8 Fablehaven - Brandon Mull

Amazing, such a good story and plot, looove raxtus

Fun fantasy filled with magic I enjoy the whole series wonderful descriptive action packed wished for more

BEST SERIES EVER! Brandon Mull is amazing!

Great series, have read it 5 times

9 The Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss

My favourite book series ever

Captivating and the magic system is great... Everyone loves Kvothe

Intriguing, captivating, and endearing. You won't be able to put it down.

It's such a great book series. I recommend everyone to read it. Even though the books are thick, you seriously won't be able to put it down. Read it.

10 The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

This is Science Fiction or Dystopian Future, not Fantasy.

I agree, Google classifies it as fantasy but I think it's pretty clear it's not. - pandagirl

Not fantasy, good books but not better then any other classics

Brave brilliant darkly beautiful futuristic story of survival loved it

What?! This shouldn't be on the list - Nayan2003

The Contenders

11 His Dark Materials - Phillip Pullman

If you haven't read these, you're missing out.

Voted here to say THEY ARE MAKING A T.V. SERIES OF THIS IT WILL BE ON THE BBC

12 The Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan

Half the books above this aren't even real fantasy. Jordan created an enormous and beautiful world with this series, and it should go down as one of the classics. I think the only reason it's not higher is because the public's attention spans have dissolved. Most people don't have the patience to read a 14 book series, and it doesn't have a dumbed-down television show or movie

It's good

By far the best book series I've ever read. Can't believe it's so low on this list. Hunger games and divergent aren't even fantasy as much as sci-fi/dystopia.

This series should be number One! It is so expansive and itg reaches such a wide audience. More people need to give it a chance and not be intimidated by it's size and scope.

13 Warriors - Erin Hunter

A-ma-zing! Never gets boring and has one of the best stories ever told! It should be at least number 5. It is NOT a children's book- way too advanced. You have to be older to understand the true story behind it. My favorite author by far- I recommend her other series too. - pandaluver3009

"The first two series are good but then it gets pretty bad."
My friend must have been talking about the wrong book series.
I am on the last book of the third series and I absolutely love it. You should read it if you have nothing else to read. Even cat-haters will adore it.

Warriors is amazing! The Erins are so dedicated to doing this book series as it has been going on since 2003! (and still making books to this day) I would rate this series 12+ though as it can get pretty graphic and 100s of deaths happen. You will also not be waiting for the next book to come out since there are 80+ books. I love Harry Potter and all, but I think it's a little overrated. Warriors needs some attention! ( Fun fact: My elementary/ middle school banned warriors for being too gory ) - _IvystarOf_Mistclan_ - XxIvystarxX

I remember a long time ago, in the fourth grade (I was about 9 years old.) Where I picked up "Into The Wild" from our classroom bookshelf. I looked at it. It looked so long! And boring. But then I glanced at the book AGAIN. I saw a light shining down the crack of overshadowing trees, on a ginger cat and smiled. I have always loved cats, cats are my favorite animals. I read the first chapter and pro-log or whatever. Kind of bored, kind of tempted to read more. I read more and more. I absolutely fell IN LOVE with the characters from JUST THE FIRST BOOK. Spottedleaf, Rusty/Firepaw/Fireheart/star, Graypaw/Graystripe,Bluestar, Yellowfang amazing!

14 Divergent Trilogy - Veronica Roth

This is like one of the best series I ever read in life. Once I started reading the book, I can't let go. I just had to find out what's gonna happen next. This series is like I don't even know what to say it's just so amazing and thrilling.

Divergent was good, Insurgent was boring, and Allegiant just sucked (and not because Tris died). The characters were boring, underdeveloped, and annoying, and although the idea was interesting, the series was not written that great.

In my opinion it's better than the hunger games

Better than the movies

15 The Dark Tower - Stephen King

Top 3 without any doubt, too many young people missed this series. - ChrisPaulMVP

Why isn't this higher? In fact, why isn't this in the top 5?

I have absolutely no idea how this wasn't on here already. - Yoshilord

The best book series ever!

16 Dune - Frank and Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson
17 The Inkheart Trilogy - Cornelia Funke

Spellbinding series about stories coming to life. Originally written in German.

Spellbinding.

18 Mistborn Series - Brandon Sanderson

Love all of Sanderson's stuff (haven't read stormlight) but Mistborn is so good
Can't wait for Wax & Wayne 4

Wonderful author, well thought out story components. He always has very well conceived magical elements. In this series, it focuses on the ability of characters to ingest bits of metal and use them for special powers

19 The Mortal Instruments - Cassandra Clare

I mean jace is enough for this to be number one, I mean he would argue himself if he was here.

THIS BOOK SERIES IS AMAZING! It deserves to being the top 5! It has a MUCH complex plot and twists that Harry Potter as well!

This book series should definitely be higher up on the list. It is funny and action packed with unexpected twists and turns. One of my favorite series!

Why is it number seventeen! This is the best book series that I have ever read I couldn't put these books down. It deserves to be much higher on the list!

20 Seven Realms Saga - Cinda Williams Chima

A wonderful series of magic mystery and love set it a magical world of fantasy a great read epic story line

21 Discworld - Terry Pratchett

I love terry pratchett's series! One of the few books that can authentically make me laugh. Very witty humour with very humane themes throughout. Also has the greatest portrayal of Death.

Also, you think Harry potter was the first series to introduce a magical school of wizards? Terry did it way before Rowling, with his Unseen University.

22 The Door Within - Wayne Thomas Batson

Very well written, the plot comes together beautifully altogether. The characters are likable and not at all overpowered. It does a good job with suspense in the book itself but not for coming books. It is however, a huge cliche and thankfully got a little more original in books two and three.

23 The Lost Years of Merlin - TA Barron

Very creative. I heard there's a movie coming out someday soon.

24 Demon Cycle - Peter V. Brett

Peter V. Brett created a beautifully designed world with this series. He proceeded to develop several major characters and societies, then merged them together over the course of five books wonderfully. Besides that, it is full of gore, excitement, and great plotting. One of my favourite series for sure.

25 The Malazan Book of the Fallen - Steven Erikson

If you didn't vote for this, it's probably because you have read this.

If you have voted for anything else here and haven't read this then read it next.

Maybe not the best ever, but better than the Inheritance Cycle and Twilight. Interweaving plots and mutiple worlds beat cliche dragons and gay vampires.

26 The Riftwar Cycle - Raymond E. Feist

I read these a long time ago, by they’re always books I’m able to pick up at any time in my life. All of Feist’s books are set in the same world, spanning about 80 years, so the places he describes, Midkemia especially, are very familiar to me.

27 The Stormlight Archive - Brandon Sanderson

This is honestly some of the best written fantasy I've ever read. And I've read a good amount. The world and lore is so intriguing and the characters have really good development. You should definitely give these books a shot.

28 The Witcher - Andrzej Sapkowski
29 Wings of Fire - Tui T. Sutherland

I never read it but I really want to.

This is actually what inspired me to write. Therefore, this holds a special place in my heart, and probably always will. - Cyri

My cousin likes Redwall more, but I have the controls, so...bwahaha...WINGS OF FIRE IS AMAZING! ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT! (Harry Potter is better, but it already has enough votes, so...) YEAH! DRAGONS! HILARIOUS! (I totally have no strong opinions, but my cousin does...)

This series is the best I've ever read yet. It has action, adventure, and even space for some humor. Not mentioning its also filled with suspense at all times. Even the insults are funny(ex:You frog faced blob of camel spit). It also has many books to keep suspense going. If you didn't read it yet, well, you should. In my oppinion this should be #1. by the way,yes I did read SOME,harry potter, but this is better.

30 The First Law - Joe Abercrombie
31 Ranger's Apprentice - John Flanagan

So much military strategies, accuracy of weapon use, realistic situations, these books are actually believable. Lovable characters like the the kind Will Treaty, Erak the noble viking, Halt the grim ranger and the list goes on. These books are amazing and bring up a new adventure every time that keep you on the edge of your seat. In my opinion, they are tied with Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire. These books deserve to be higher. Please read them if you haven't

How is this 12. Deserves 1 for sure!

I only read one, and I loved it

32 The Maze Runners - James Dashner

This series is amazing. I'm readings The Death cure right now

This series's is amazing. I'm reading The Death Cure right now.

Newt is perfect.

33 Artemis Fowl - Eoin Colfer
34 Redwall - Brian Jacques

This was my intro to fantasy as a kid, and they still haven't lost their charm when I go back and read them now. Each one is an adventure worth taking.

35 The Saga of Darren Shan - Darren Shan

These were the books that marked my teenage years. I've read and re-read them several times

36 The Belgariad - David Eddings

One of the greatest series I have ever read, couldn't put it down

37 Throne of Glass - Sarah J. Maas

Why isn't this in the top 10?

This book is so good. I mean seriously! Its kinda like a young version of GOT and its really twisted. You will laugh, cry and scream all through out the series. The plot, the characters, the action, romance everything is AMAZING.
Seriously just buy this book and read it right now.

38 The Bartimaeus Sequence - Jonathan Stroud
39 The Farseer Trilogy - Robin Hobb

One of the most underrated novel ever!

40 Guardians of Ga'hoole - Kathryn Lasky

I like this book series a lot. I think it’s really underrated, and more people should read it. (I tried staring a book club in my school in order to make this a little less underrated, but people who went to elementary school with me apparently don’t realize that I do indeed have book standards, and warned people against joining the book club.) This is a really cool book. It deserves to be higher than 51.

I didn't really like this that much. I liked it, but I just liked Warriors and Harry Potter more. I'll try reading further, and I might change my opinion, but for now, Firestar Forever!

41 The Spooks - Joseph Delaney
42 Bone - Jeff Smith

YEP

43 Earthsea - Ursula Le Guin

Loved these books as a young teenager. Much easier to read then some of her other books (such as The Left Hand of Darkness).

This was Harry Potter before Harry Potter, it deserves to be top 10-15 - Eorel

44 The Kane Chronicles - Rick Riordan

Riordan Rocks!

Riordan - Orlemley

45 The Once and Future King - T.H. White
46 Hush Hush - Becca Fitzpatrick
47 The Sword of Shannara - Terry Brooks

Classic high fantasy

48 The Black Company - Glen Cook

Deserves to be higher, this is a great series, the first 5 books or so are very good. - Element119

50 The Dark Elf Trilogy - R.A. Salvatore
