Top Ten Fantasy Book Series

The Top Ten

1 Harry Potter - JK Rowling Harry Potter - JK Rowling Product Image

Lord of the Rings is also really good - just not as good as Harry Potter of course!

This series is undeniably one of the most popular fantasy/adventure books in the world. However, this series isn't really for me. Although the storyline revolves around a boy named Harry Potter who attends Hogwarts for wizardry and magic, it kind of confuses me. But that's just my opinion. The plots and scenes are great and I would rate this an 8/10.

I can not express my love for HP if you know me than I am probably the most obsessed person you know I love it 2948384959356828/10

I love Harry Potter! AWESOME! JK you awesome lol I haven't read ALL the books yet though.

2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien Product Image

The Lord of the Rings has the best writing, plot, characters, complexity, and worldbuilding of any book ever written. It is both epic and realistic, both light and dark. It, and The Silmarillion, are the pinnacle of Fantasy. It deserves the #1 spot! The only reason it is second instead of first is because it's actually art, which is harder for big companies to get money from than cheap made-for-merchandise children's books, and it therefore is less often advertised.

what people, harry potter ahead of this?! god, I'm losing faith in humanity

Best series of all time
The Tolkien world is just beautiful told in many other books too like the hobbit or the silmarillion

It is always hard to choose my favorite fantasy book, it's simply my favorite genre. But I thought, well, why not give the crown to the one that started it all? I own, and I have read the series so many times, and my girlfriend was the one who really got me into this one. So now, we both have them almost memorized by heart. I can never say how great they are, it is pretty much inexpressible. It's just SO GREAT!

3 A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin

This is one of the best fantasy series! The storyline is enormous and intriguing! Once you start reading you can never stop! It has everything.. Dragons, wars, twists and turns and Sex! The characters are well built and you can imagine the picture in your head as you read the book

The masterpiece of masterpieces, a truly extravagant book series, the magnum opus of fantasy novels. Realistic characters, astounding details, and plot arcs that will forever leave you guessing. It rivals, perhaps surpasses such series as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Need I say more?

This Series wins out because of the characters. When you read the specific chapters even though you're reading through Cersei's twisted vision George makes you understand her mentality, he justifies the evil the characters do to the point where you start nodding along and whispering 'Okay I might do the same thing. '

This is ranked 12 as of April 2013, but in 5 years time it will be number 1. Harry Potter is good, but nothing is more amazing than reading about the Game of Thrones.

4 Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan Product Image

Great worldbuilding
Likeable characters
Very well written (I love Rick Riordan)
Cool story
I really love the comedy spin-off 'Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods' where Percy explains the Greek myths
In my to five fantasy book series

I have not read this book series, but I have heard of it. And it seems like a good book.

My 4th fave series only after LOTR Harry Potter and wings of fire

I had a friend who liked Harry Potter so much. I told him that Percy Jackson was way better. He didn't believe me. I made him read The Lightning Thief. Now he is the deputy of my Percy Jackson Empire at my school.

5 The Heroes of Olympus - Rick Riordan The Heroes of Olympus - Rick Riordan Product Image

This is my favorite book series, how is it not first? Really all of Rick Riordan's books are my favorites. I think this is better than Harry Potter, and even better than the original Percy Jackson series, because you get introduced to so many new characters, as well as old ones.

I loved the books so much and I really all rick riordan books the writer is really creative and really did great I really wish he would write about percy going to Egypt since I am an Egyptian thank you so much for putting your time and effort in writing this book
All the love and support from Egypt

The entire Percy Jackson series is better than any book series ever... ! And the Heroes of Olympus is much better than The Olympians, so this should be first and The Olympians second!

The sequel series to Percy Jackson. New characters, new writing style, Greeks & Romans included. Maybe not as good as the first series, but still a good read. I'm waiting to get my hands on the latest book!

6 The Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis Product Image

The best low-fantasy series. It's remarkably beautiful, useful, and fun!

This series does an excellent job on its’ spiritual themes and Christian parallels.

I love The Chronicles of Narnia. I cannot believe it is only number seven. Me and my mom began reading the Lion, The With, and The Wardrobe first. It is an amazing book. My favorite character might be Lucy or the White Witch. When we finished that amazing book, we watched the movie, and then we read the Magician's Nephew! I am ten, and these books are so awesome.

They seem like books for little kids, but dig deeper and you'll find lots of profound meaning.

7 Inheritance Cycle - Christopher Paolini

The series has incredible descriptions that make you feel like you're there. A must read series for sure.

All the characters are so deeply developed and woven into the amazingly interesting story.

One of the greatest books of all times. Deserves to be number1

What? This is one of the worst books ever. He ripped off from lord of the rings and star wars. The only reason he's famous is because of his young age

8 Fablehaven - Brandon Mull Fablehaven - Brandon Mull Product Image

Fun fantasy filled with magic I enjoy the whole series wonderful descriptive action packed wished for more

BEST SERIES EVER! Brandon Mull is amazing!

Great series, have read it 5 times

Best series, like, ever

9 The Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss The Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss Product Image

Intriguing, captivating, and endearing. You won't be able to put it down.

It's such a great book series. I recommend everyone to read it. Even though the books are thick, you seriously won't be able to put it down. Read it.

Some of the best books I've ever read, and by far my favorite fantasy series.

It's by far the best epic fantasy books

10 The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins Product Image

I have saw some of these movies, but I like more of a magical fantasy book. This is still a good series though.

I love the Hunger Games! I personally think that it's better than Harry Potter, although I'd have to say that this is tied with PJO and HoO. The Hunger Games is just such a great story and one of my favorite books of all time.

This is Science Fiction or Dystopian Future, not Fantasy.

I agree, Google classifies it as fantasy but I think it's pretty clear it's not. - pandagirl

Not fantasy, good books but not better then any other classics

The Contenders

11 Warriors - Erin Hunter Warriors - Erin Hunter Product Image

sure! for one number be should It best! the is This warriors! Yes

This is the best, why is it not even at least not a contender! I will murder any warrior haters!

I found my warroir family and never letting go of my family this series is the best and I cannot wait for the movie in 2024

What? * coughs...* What kind of * coughs..* books * cough, wheeze* are these?! warriors is the best SERIES IN THE INFINITY OF THE WORLD! this should be #1 Right now!

12 His Dark Materials - Phillip Pullman His Dark Materials - Phillip Pullman Product Image

If you haven't read these, you're missing out.

I love this kind of thing.

13 The Dark Tower - Stephen King The Dark Tower - Stephen King Product Image

Why isn't this higher? In fact, why isn't this in the top 5?

Top 3 without any doubt, too many young people missed this series.

I have absolutely no idea how this wasn't on here already.

The best book series ever!

14 The Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan

Most of the other stuff on this list is not even proper fantasy

Half the books above this aren't even real fantasy. Jordan created an enormous and beautiful world with this series, and it should go down as one of the classics. I think the only reason it's not higher is because the public's attention spans have dissolved. Most people don't have the patience to read a 14 book series, and it doesn't have a dumbed-down television show or movie

The only reason this is sixteen is because not enough people have read this series.

Why isn't this higher up?

15 Divergent Trilogy - Veronica Roth Divergent Trilogy - Veronica Roth Product Image

This is like one of the best series I ever read in life. Once I started reading the book, I can't let go. I just had to find out what's gonna happen next. This series is like I don't even know what to say it's just so amazing and thrilling.

Divergent was good, Insurgent was boring, and Allegiant just sucked (and not because Tris died). The characters were boring, underdeveloped, and annoying, and although the idea was interesting, the series was not written that great.

In my opinion it's better than the hunger games

Better than the movies

16 Dune - Frank and Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson
17 The Inkheart Trilogy - Cornelia Funke The Inkheart Trilogy - Cornelia Funke Product Image

Spellbinding series about stories coming to life. Originally written in German.

18 Mistborn Series - Brandon Sanderson

Reading this series almost sent me into a state of shock and draws such emotion from me. Plus the magic system is great and understandable, unlike anything I've seen before. And yeah, I've read Harry Potter.

Wonderful author, well thought out story components. He always has very well conceived magical elements. In this series, it focuses on the ability of characters to ingest bits of metal and use them for special powers

Love all of Sanderson's stuff (haven't read stormlight) but Mistborn is so good
Can't wait for Wax & Wayne 4

19 The Mortal Instruments - Cassandra Clare The Mortal Instruments - Cassandra Clare Product Image

This book series should definitely be higher up on the list. It is funny and action packed with unexpected twists and turns. One of my favorite series!

Why is it number seventeen! This is the best book series that I have ever read I couldn't put these books down. It deserves to be much higher on the list!

THIS BOOK SERIES IS AMAZING! It deserves to being the top 5! It has a MUCH complex plot and twists that Harry Potter as well!

Why is this series so far down in this series

20 Seven Realms Saga - Cinda Williams Chima

A wonderful series of magic mystery and love set it a magical world of fantasy a great read epic story line

21 Wings of Fire - Tui T. Sutherland Wings of Fire - Tui T. Sutherland Product Image

My absolute favourite book ever if you have not read it you should it is the BEST book ever. I have read it a billion time #wof

I love the fact that dragons rule the land and not people. there are mystery's around every corner in this book series

Honestly, the only books on here I like are Harry Potter, Fablehaven, and of course, Wings Of Fire. Like who doesn't love a good book about dragons!?

I like dragon wars. I think this is a creative book. (only read the graphic novels)

22 Discworld - Terry Pratchett

This should be top 10 surely! Richly intertwined fantasy comedy with series within a series! The city watch books alone are top 10 material!

I love terry pratchett's series! One of the few books that can authentically make me laugh. Very witty humour with very humane themes throughout. Also has the greatest portrayal of Death.

Also, you think Harry potter was the first series to introduce a magical school of wizards? Terry did it way before Rowling, with his Unseen University.

23 The Door Within - Wayne Thomas Batson The Door Within - Wayne Thomas Batson Product Image

Very well written, the plot comes together beautifully altogether. The characters are likable and not at all overpowered. It does a good job with suspense in the book itself but not for coming books. It is however, a huge cliche and thankfully got a little more original in books two and three.

24 The First Law - Joe Abercrombie The First Law - Joe Abercrombie Product Image
25 The Lost Years of Merlin - TA Barron The Lost Years of Merlin - TA Barron Product Image

Very creative. I heard there's a movie coming out someday soon.
