Top 10 Best Fantasy Book Series

The Top Ten
1 Harry Potter - JK Rowling Harry Potter - JK Rowling Product Image

I loved this series. It had everything, the creatures, the characters, the magic, the battles. I wish this series could go on forever. It is definitely one of the greatest books out there.

Great story. Author diminished series by getting into too many awkward discussions on social media and with the Press regarding the characters.

Harry Potter taught me so many things. It has to be the best, all characters, plots, magic beasts, all of them. Thank you j.k Rowling. You have let me have the time of my lives. Harry Potter every one! Vote for Harry Potter! If any of you crazy Potterheads like me watched Harry Potter tribute: time of our lives you have to be crying your heart out. After philosophers stone I knew that I would always have most of this magical series but now after deathly hallows I knew there was nothing to look forward to anymore. It has truly been the time of my life. I am sobbing as I write this. So emotional. You get attached to this character and they die. So heartbreaking

I absolutely just cannot imagine life with out Harry James potter with me. Ever since the first book he was where ever I was. Like I best friend I never had one before he came and I cannot describe the book series in words. It's too much. The main character isn't perfect which is why I love Harry so much. Ginny taught me ...more

Harry Potter was such an amazing series I just wanted to read more and more. It had so many amazing characters and also characters that are just fun to hate. JK Rowling is an amazing author and I wish she had written more books. I can not put into words how amazing the series was. The series gave you characters to look up to and valuable lessons.

2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien Product Image

Harry Potter is also hood, but now it's little childish for me. Lord of the rings is the best. It isn't childish, and just.. magnificent. I only watched a movie because this book might be bored, but heard that main storyline is same. The best fantasy ever. Anyway, Joan Rowling also referred this book's universe writing harry potter

Although Harry potter and the others are great as well, I feel as if this book has a sort of magical feeling to it- a feeling I have never felt while reading any other book. Its beauty, its wonder... As I read I felt as though J.R.R. Tolkien poured his entire soul into this, and that the words he had written were straight from the heart. It is so simple, yet so complex at the same time and that often leaves me once again entranced by its beauty. I understand that for some it is a little difficult to read, and I felt that way as well at the beginning. But a few chapters in I found I could not put the book down- it had simply mesmerized me with the imagery, the voice, the tone, the characters and the beauty of all that is Middle-Earth. This book is, in simplest terms, beautiful. I have fallen in love with everything about it, I have felt the love Tolkien put into it. It is one of my biggest inspirations. This elegant fantasy will forever have a place in my heart- it changed me. It ...more

Established the rules of the fantasy world vis a vis the various races usually included in any subsequent tales. In addition, written in classic English prose with complex descriptions interspersed with detailed action-oriented segments. I will say the final battle in Harry Potter came close to the emotional content of the battle of Minus Tirith, but only close, not equal or superior to. And, the final segment of the Lord of the Rings in which the band of Hobbits must retake their homeland and the ring bearers depart Middle Earth has no parallel in Harry Potter.

If this book had never been written there may not be the fantasy we know so well today. This book which was later broken up into three different parts but made none the less epic, and I must say that even though John Ronald Ruel Tolkien passed away around fifty years ago, his fame still lives in every single book I pick up. I have to say all of the books on this list are great, but this book stands out to me a lot. I never have trouble finding it either in the library or the bookstore, so I say here and nw that this books deserves first place next to Harry Potter. The Lord Of The Rings is EPIC!

3 Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan Product Image

This book series doesn't have any direct point when it comes to it but the plot and story is good. It comes into play as the original Greek fantasy.

The BEST. It doesn't need a film adaption to become popular. I mean, I read Harry Potter only because of films and also read many other books like that, Maze Runner, Narnia, etc. But Percy Jackson doesn't have such film adaptations(Those stupid movies doesn't count, okay? If anything, they DEFAMED Percy Jackson. I HATE them)

Definitely will end up as a classic for years to come. We all Laughed and Cried with these Characters. They made me feel more confident in myself, find the hero inside me, and maybe a tint of romance. These books made me wonder what life would be like as a demigod for me. I know kinda weird, but that's just me.

The Percy Jackson series is one of the most readable fantasy book out there and is great for both children, young adults and even adults. It not only includes laugh out loud humour but also is a book you can learn a lot from. Personally I learnt a lot about the ancient Greek mythology.

4 A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin

The masterpiece of masterpieces, a truly extravagant book series, the magnum opus of fantasy novels. Realistic characters, astounding details, and plot arcs that will forever leave you guessing. It rivals, perhaps surpasses such series as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Need I say more?

Any Percy Jackson series in the top ten fantasy book series is only due to bastard children voting stupidly. What about the Kingkiller Chronilce, the Malazan series, just to name a few. I think ASOIAf should be first or second, followed by LOTR, then Harry Potter, then the other ones I mentioned. There are a plethora of series out there that top anything written by Rick Riordan easily.

This Series wins out because of the characters. When you read the specific chapters even though you're reading through Cersei's twisted vision George makes you understand her mentality, he justifies the evil the characters do to the point where you start nodding along and whispering 'Okay I might do the same thing. '

This is one of the best fantasy series! The storyline is enormous and intriguing! Once you start reading you can never stop! It has everything.. Dragons, wars, twists and turns and Sex! The characters are well built and you can imagine the picture in your head as you read the book

5 The Heroes of Olympus - Rick Riordan The Heroes of Olympus - Rick Riordan Product Image

The Heroes of Olympus is really just a better spin off of Percy Jackson. It really does an amazing job of putting action and mystery, 2 great plot points, together.

This is my favorite book series, how is it not first? Really all of Rick Riordan's books are my favorites. I think this is better than Harry Potter, and even better than the original Percy Jackson series, because you get introduced to so many new characters, as well as old ones.

Looking back, this series wasn't that great. Riordan's writing style does not work nearly as well in 3rd person, there were too many characters to focus on, and The Blood of Olympus ended really anticlimactically. Percy Jackson was good though.

The entire Percy Jackson series is better than any book series ever... ! And the Heroes of Olympus is much better than The Olympians, so this should be first and The Olympians second!

6 The Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis Product Image

The chronicles of Narnia was the first fantasy book I ever read, or watched. It was the thing that inspired me to read more of the great fantasy books and movies.

These are awesome! My favorite one is Prince Caspian, but they're all great. It's such a magical world, and he makes you believe that you're really there in Narnia.

I love The Chronicles of Narnia. I cannot believe it is only number seven. Me and my mom began reading the Lion, The With, and The Wardrobe first. It is an amazing book. My favorite character might be Lucy or the White Witch. When we finished that amazing book, we watched the movie, and then we read the Magician's Nephew! I am ten, and these books are so awesome.

I absolutely love The Chronicles of Narnia! I'm just finishing up The Silver Chair, The NEED to make a movie of that. And soon!

7 The Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan

Half the books above this aren't even real fantasy. Jordan created an enormous and beautiful world with this series, and it should go down as one of the classics. I think the only reason it's not higher is because the public's attention spans have dissolved. Most people don't have the patience to read a 14 book series, and it doesn't have a dumbed-down television show or movie

Utterly amazing!
All the characters are very likable. Moiraine is fascinating and manipulative, and Rand is tragic and heroic. Those two are my personal favorite characters.
The mythology is great. The villaisn are despicable- especially the White Cloaks.
I have finished the first five, and can't wait for more.
Other great fantasy series are Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games, Twilight, His Dark Materials, all of the Rick Riordans (Percy Jackson, Red Pyramid, Roman), Fablehaven, Redwall, and Ranger's Apprentice. I'm too young to read G.R.R. Martin's series, but it sounds great. However, I was seriously dissapointed by Narnia. The movies are better.

Y'all know that I love the Wheel of Time. Sure, it's slow at times (*Cough* Sea Folk, Rodel Ituralde *Cough*) but 95% of the time you're captivated by it. There are times when you want to say, "That did not just happen! " or where you just sit there asking the air "why? " You'll cry, you'll ponder, you'll laugh, and quite often. You might come up with how the story might progress, though it won't be what you expect. There's romance, battle, comedy, everything! You find yourself liking characters that you didn't like at first. By the last couple books, you'll think of them as friends. 14 books really makes a bond, although not a Warder's.(Kudos to anyone who gets it! ) Sometimes, you don't realize something until later, and you can't believe that you missed it. (Book 13- Aludra's dragons are cannons! ) Don't be afraid of the last 3 books, Brandon Sanderson does a nice job of continuing the story.
Brown Ajah for life!

I've read the whole series 4 times. I can't get enough of it. Great fantasy series and deserves to be ranked higher than 14. The audiobook is great as well. I'm so addicted to it, it's my favorite drug!
Peace, you bloody goat lickers!

8 The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins Product Image

I love the Hunger Games! I personally think that it's better than Harry Potter, although I'd have to say that this is tied with PJO and HoO. The Hunger Games is just such a great story and one of my favorite books of all time.

I have saw some of these movies, but I like more of a magical fantasy book. This is still a good series though.

I've heard they are amazing, and they are.

What?! This shouldn't be on the list

9 Warriors - Erin Hunter Warriors - Erin Hunter Product Image

How is Warriors only #9? It should be way higher! The Erin team is great at writing these books, and I hope the series continues forever!

I can see how this is barely within the top ten, at number 9, but it's storyline is amazing and makes me want to cry, it leans a bit to much toward action, for a dark forest with 4 clans fighting, but it's still really good.

Warriors, Harry Potter, and Wings of Fire my absolute favorite series! Warriors is a book series about cats who live in rival clans. There's Thunderclan, Riverclan, Windclan, Shadowclan, and Skyclan. In this series we see cats chose between doing what they think is right, or what the code they follow says is right. We see forbidden romance, how greed can change someone, and all kinds of thrilling plots. There are different arcs in the series, seven, to be exact, and they all show different perspectives. We have the arc that shows how the clans began, Dawn of the Clans, the first arc, The prophecy's begin, followed by The new Prophecy, The power of Three, Omen of the Stars, A Vision of Shadows, and the newest, The Broken Code. They also have Super editions that show the life of different cats, and novella's, short stories about a certain event in a characters life. Lastly, they have a few graphic novels. I totally recommend this series!

Warriors is the best series I know! I was reading some of the reviews for this, and it's true. Warriors should be number 1! Although you should be a avid reader to be able to understand these books correctly. The character development is great and I fall in love with each character. I love the warriors series so much, it has become my life! By the way Harry Potter is so overrated. Warriors is the number 1 series! Highly recommended. Enough said.

10 Wings of Fire - Tui T. Sutherland Wings of Fire - Tui T. Sutherland Product Image

Tui is such a good writer. The idea of what's going on changes from dragon to dragon in each book, it has a few more mistakes than something like Harry Potter, buts it's personally the best book series I have ever read.

I LOVE the Wings of Fire books . It has more of my type of taste. Adventurous, mysterious, filled with action ,and finally romantic. Honestly , the should make a movie about this splendid series.

This series is awesome. The characters are cool, the plot is amazing, and I love dragons so this is probably my favourite book series!

- Goldsun the Sandwing/skywing

This series is amazing. I loved seeing the story from the dragon's point of view and I love the plot. One of the best series for me.

The Contenders
11 Fablehaven - Brandon Mull Fablehaven - Brandon Mull Product Image

Its one of the few book series I can read over and over again, and I never get tired of the charecters, imagery, and the great story lines.

Best series, like, ever

Gonna read it soon

12 Inheritance Cycle - Christopher Paolini Inheritance Cycle - Christopher Paolini Product Image

Maybe a ripoff of the lord of the rings and star wars, but still it is still a great series.
And if we consider that the author was 15 when he wrote eragon, I would forgive him for the ripping. After all, I would never write such a masterpiece.
But sorry guys. This series will never be a legend because it isn't original enough.

This series was a great one! It has almost everything I want in a book. Tons of action and a great storyline. If you have not read this series READ IT NOW!

Such an intricate world, you really get lost in the pages. If you know the film then read the book because unlike the film you won't be disappointed!

What? This is one of the worst books ever. He ripped off from lord of the rings and star wars. The only reason he's famous is because of his young age

13 The Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss The Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss Product Image

It's such a great book series. I recommend everyone to read it. Even though the books are thick, you seriously won't be able to put it down. Read it.

Some of the best books I've ever read, and by far my favorite fantasy series.

Intriguing, captivating, and endearing. You won't be able to put it down.

Amazing! I couldn't put it down.

14 His Dark Materials - Phillip Pullman His Dark Materials - Phillip Pullman Product Image

If you haven't read these, you're missing out.

I love this kind of thing.

15 The Dark Tower - Stephen King The Dark Tower - Stephen King Product Image

Top 3 without any doubt, too many young people missed this series.

I have absolutely no idea how this wasn't on here already.

Why isn't this higher? In fact, why isn't this in the top 5?

Great story! Best ending ever!

16 Dune - Frank and Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson

Great story, Heavy duty politics.

17 Mistborn Series - Brandon Sanderson

Reading this series almost sent me into a state of shock and draws such emotion from me. Plus the magic system is great and understandable, unlike anything I've seen before. And yeah, I've read Harry Potter.

Wonderful author, well thought out story components. He always has very well conceived magical elements. In this series, it focuses on the ability of characters to ingest bits of metal and use them for special powers

Great story. Heavy on "magic".

18 The Inkheart Trilogy - Cornelia Funke The Inkheart Trilogy - Cornelia Funke Product Image

Spellbinding series about stories coming to life. Originally written in German.

19 The Mortal Instruments - Cassandra Clare The Mortal Instruments - Cassandra Clare Product Image

I'm a HUGE harry potter fan- I mean I've been reading and rereading it since I was seven- so I think saying TMI should be second on the list might be a bit biased of of me.. but it really should. I mean, I got to live the lives of these characters and they became so dear to me that I was literally lost by the time I was done with the series.

This book series should definitely be higher up on the list. It is funny and action packed with unexpected twists and turns. One of my favorite series!

Why is it number seventeen! This is the best book series that I have ever read I couldn't put these books down. It deserves to be much higher on the list!

I mean jace is enough for this to be number one, I mean he would argue himself if he was here.

20 The Riftwar Cycle - Raymond E. Feist The Riftwar Cycle - Raymond E. Feist Product Image

I read these a long time ago, by they're always books I'm able to pick up at any time in my life. All of Feist's books are set in the same world, spanning about 80 years, so the places he describes, Midkemia especially, are very familiar to me.

21 Discworld - Terry Pratchett

I tell you, this should be top on the list. It's far better than Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, both of which contain inumerable cliches. Discworld pokes fun at every cliche and stereotype to fantasy there is. It's got the first Death EVER to have an actual personality, and all the characters stand out against all the other books' people. Satirical and hilarious, Discworld is definitely the best fantasy book EVER.

I love terry pratchett's series! One of the few books that can authentically make me laugh. Very witty humour with very humane themes throughout. Also has the greatest portrayal of Death.

Also, you think Harry potter was the first series to introduce a magical school of wizards? Terry did it way before Rowling, with his Unseen University.

This should be top 10 surely! Richly intertwined fantasy comedy with series within a series! The city watch books alone are top 10 material!

22 Seven Realms Saga - Cinda Williams Chima
23 The Black Company - Glen Cook The Black Company - Glen Cook Product Image

Deserves to be higher, this is a great series, the first 5 books or so are very good.

24 The Door Within - Wayne Thomas Batson The Door Within - Wayne Thomas Batson Product Image

Very well written, the plot comes together beautifully altogether. The characters are likable and not at all overpowered. It does a good job with suspense in the book itself but not for coming books. It is however, a huge cliche and thankfully got a little more original in books two and three.

25 The First Law - Joe Abercrombie The First Law - Joe Abercrombie Product Image
