Top Ten Fantasy Book Series

The Top Ten

1 Harry Potter - JK Rowling

Ha no crap Harry Potter wins, best series of all time an the most profitable. Jk Rowling sure knows how to write a good book without making it seem ridiculous. Lord of the rings is a very close second, I think they should tie actually. The writing is complex for some people in LOTR, but I love it - dragonfly99

Harry potter winns

Yeah, I know most people would put this higher, but that's the point of voting, right? It takes the fun out of it if the one you vote for is already at the top.

No contest. - Disturbedpotato

2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien

I was split between this and Harry Potter, but what made me choose this is that this made a fantasy story span over the course of thousands of years, while with Harry Potter the timeline stretches about 50 years, I'm not saying Harry Potter is bad,(In fact, it excels in pacing sometimes) but The Lord of the Rings is a massive influence to all fantasy series being released today. While Harry Potter does a good job telling the story about a secret wizarding world, this series creates new races, new languages, and told an incredible story, Harry Potter is still amazing but it dwarfs in comparison to the world created by JRR Tolkien.

Although Harry potter and the others are great as well, I feel as if this book has a sort of magical feeling to it- a feeling I have never felt while reading any other book. Its beauty, its wonder... As I read I felt as though J.R.R. Tolkien poured his entire soul into this, and that the words he had written were straight from the heart. It is so simple, yet so complex at the same time and that often leaves me once again entranced by its beauty. I understand that for some it is a little difficult to read, and I felt that way as well at the beginning. But a few chapters in I found I could not put the book down- it had simply mesmerized me with the imagery, the voice, the tone, the characters and the beauty of all that is Middle-Earth. This book is, in simplest terms, beautiful. I have fallen in love with everything about it, I have felt the love Tolkien put into it. It is one of my biggest inspirations. This elegant fantasy will forever have a place in my heart- it changed me. It ...more

In my Opinion, this should be number one, not Harry Potter (but Harry Potter would deserve a place as number two). Tolkien did not only create a completely new world, but new races, languages and the most wonderful story I have ever seen in my life. Harry Potter is great also, but I am sorry to say, it's nothing compared to Lord of the Rings. - Cookies

I have absolutely no idea how Harry Potter could possibly be considered better than this. It's just mind boggling. Makes me think a bunch of 10 year old's took over.

3 Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan

The Percy Jackson series is one of the most readable fantasy book out there and is great for both children, young adults and even adults. It not only includes laugh out loud humour but also is a book you can learn a lot from. Personally I learnt a lot about the ancient Greek mythology.

Awesome for all ages! And it was really useful to help me learn about all the Greek mythology for my module on Ancient Greece.

Every turn of the page brought us a new view of the life of the new demigod who discovers his life will forever be a challenge wonderful adventures trials to overcome and excitement at every turn

I love all of Rick Riordans series, they are amazing! This one is my favorite, but the Kane Cronicles and the Hero’s of Olympus are also very good! This book series is so good. I love J.K Rowling to, but RR is way better (in my opinion).

4 A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin

This is one of the best fantasy series! The storyline is enormous and intriguing! Once you start reading you can never stop! It has everything.. Dragons, wars, twists and turns and Sex! The characters are well built and you can imagine the picture in your head as you read the book

The masterpiece of masterpieces, a truly extravagant book series, the magnum opus of fantasy novels. Realistic characters, astounding details, and plot arcs that will forever leave you guessing. It rivals, perhaps surpasses such series as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Need I say more?

This Series wins out because of the characters. When you read the specific chapters even though you're reading through Cersei's twisted vision George makes you understand her mentality, he justifies the evil the characters do to the point where you start nodding along and whispering 'Okay I might do the same thing. '

Fantasy for grown-ups. Almost all others in the list are for kids...

5 The Heroes of Olympus - Rick Riordan

The entire Percy Jackson series is better than any book series ever... ! And the Heroes of Olympus is much better than The Olympians, so this should be first and The Olympians second!

The sequel series to Percy Jackson. New characters, new writing style, Greeks & Romans included. Maybe not as good as the first series, but still a good read. I'm waiting to get my hands on the latest book!

Looking back, this series wasn't that great. Riordan's writing style does not work nearly as well in 3rd person, there were too many characters to focus on, and The Blood of Olympus ended really anticlimactically. Percy Jackson was good though. - Yoshilord

, after reading the Percy Jackson series, I realized this series is MUCH BETTER! It is epic. Everyone should read it!

6 The Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis

They seem like books for little kids, but dig deeper and you'll find lots of profound meaning.

I absolutely love The Chronicles of Narnia! I'm just finishing up The Silver Chair, The NEED to make a movie of that. And soon!

I've read the first book, and it was awesome, haven't read the others but the movies are in my top favorites!

Words don't even make sense

7 Inheritance Cycle - Christopher Paolini

All the characters are so deeply developed and woven into the amazingly interesting story.

The series has incredible descriptions that make you feel like you're there. A must read series for sure.

One of the greatest books of all times. Deserves to be number1

Love fablehaven - Orlemley

9 The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

This is Science Fiction or Dystopian Future, not Fantasy.

I agree, Google classifies it as fantasy but I think it's pretty clear it's not. - pandagirl

Brave brilliant darkly beautiful futuristic story of survival loved it

Not fantasy, good books but not better then any other classics

This should be second, after Harry Potter

10 His Dark Materials - Phillip Pullman

If you haven't read these, you're missing out.

The Contenders

11 The Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss

Intriguing, captivating, and endearing. You won't be able to put it down.

It's such a great book series. I recommend everyone to read it. Even though the books are thick, you seriously won't be able to put it down. Read it.

Some of the best books I've ever read, and by far my favorite fantasy series.

It's by far the best epic fantasy books

12 Divergent Trilogy - Veronica Roth

This is like one of the best series I ever read in life. Once I started reading the book, I can't let go. I just had to find out what's gonna happen next. This series is like I don't even know what to say it's just so amazing and thrilling.

Divergent was good, Insurgent was boring, and Allegiant just sucked (and not because Tris died). The characters were boring, underdeveloped, and annoying, and although the idea was interesting, the series was not written that great.

In my opinion it's better than the hunger games

13 The Inkheart Trilogy - Cornelia Funke

Spellbinding series about stories coming to life. Originally written in German.

14 The Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan

The only reason this is sixteen is because not enough people have read this series.

Why isn't this higher up? - Themattster12

Y'all know that I love the Wheel of Time. Sure, it's slow at times (*Cough* Sea Folk, Rodel Ituralde *Cough*) but 95% of the time you're captivated by it. There are times when you want to say, "That did not just happen! " or where you just sit there asking the air "why? " You'll cry, you'll ponder, you'll laugh, and quite often. You might come up with how the story might progress, though it won't be what you expect. There's romance, battle, comedy, everything! You find yourself liking characters that you didn't like at first. By the last couple books, you'll think of them as friends. 14 books really makes a bond, although not a Warder's.(Kudos to anyone who gets it! ) Sometimes, you don't realize something until later, and you can't believe that you missed it. (Book 13- Aludra's dragons are cannons! ) Don't be afraid of the last 3 books, Brandon Sanderson does a nice job of continuing the story.
Brown Ajah for life! - Merilille

I've read the whole series 4 times. I can't get enough of it. Great fantasy series and deserves to be ranked higher than 14. The audiobook is great as well. I'm so addicted to it, it's my favorite drug!
Peace, you bloody goat lickers!

15 Warriors - Erin Hunter

It is amazing! A story that warms your heart with their loyalty for each other. They die for love! They fight, side by side, for what they believe in. Through all the betrayals, they never give up! Beautiful storyline and wording. A work of art. More than just a book. An experience

Just Read it. It's my favorite series of all time and that says a lot since I've read literally thousands of books

Seriously, 20th? This series needs to be way higher on the list.

15TH?!?! GET THIS TO TOP 5 NOW! - Bramblestar

16 Seven Realms Saga - Cinda Williams Chima

A wonderful series of magic mystery and love set it a magical world of fantasy a great read epic story line

17 The Door Within - Wayne Thomas Batson
18 The Mortal Instruments - Cassandra Clare

This book series should definitely be higher up on the list. It is funny and action packed with unexpected twists and turns. One of my favorite series!

Why is it number seventeen! This is the best book series that I have ever read I couldn't put these books down. It deserves to be much higher on the list!

Why is this series so far down in this series

I'm a HUGE harry potter fan- I mean I've been reading and rereading it since I was seven- so I think saying TMI should be second on the list might be a bit biased of of me.. but it really should. I mean, I got to live the lives of these characters and they became so dear to me that I was literally lost by the time I was done with the series.

19 Discworld - Terry Pratchett

I love terry pratchett's series! One of the few books that can authentically make me laugh. Very witty humour with very humane themes throughout. Also has the greatest portrayal of Death.

Also, you think Harry potter was the first series to introduce a magical school of wizards? Terry did it way before Rowling, with his Unseen University.

20 The Lost Years of Merlin - TA Barron

Very creative. I heard there's a movie coming out someday soon.

21 The Dark Tower - Stephen King

Why isn't this higher? In fact, why isn't this in the top 5?

I have absolutely no idea how this wasn't on here already. - Yoshilord

Top 3 without any doubt, too many young people missed this series. - ChrisPaulMVP

The best book series ever!

22 The Malazan Book of the Fallen - Steven Erikson
23 Mistborn Series - Brandon Sanderson

Wonderful author, well thought out story components. He always has very well conceived magical elements. In this series, it focuses on the ability of characters to ingest bits of metal and use them for special powers

24 Ranger's Apprentice - John Flanagan

So much military strategies, accuracy of weapon use, realistic situations, these books are actually believable. Lovable characters like the the kind Will Treaty, Erak the noble viking, Halt the grim ranger and the list goes on. These books are amazing and bring up a new adventure every time that keep you on the edge of your seat. In my opinion, they are tied with Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire. These books deserve to be higher. Please read them if you haven't

25 The Maze Runners - James Dashner

This series is amazing. I'm readings The Death cure right now

This series's is amazing. I'm reading The Death Cure right now.

Newt is perfect.

26 The Saga of Darren Shan - Darren Shan

These were the books that marked my teenage years. I've read and re-read them several times

27 Artemis Fowl - Eoin Colfer
28 Wings of Fire - Tui T. Sutherland

Oh these are wonderful! The plot is amazing, the characters are awesome. Read this saga/series!

This was one I liked a lot. Not many stories where not only dragons are the main characters, but are the dominant species of their world. And not as violent or with s many needless deaths as the Age of Fire series.

Love tsunami and glory

BEST SERIES EVER well tied with warriror cats

29 The Witcher - Andrzej Sapkowski
30 Redwall - Brian Jacques

This was my intro to fantasy as a kid, and they still haven't lost their charm when I go back and read them now. Each one is an adventure worth taking.

31 Dune - Frank and Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson
32 The Spooks - Joseph Delaney
33 The Stormlight Archive - Brandon Sanderson

This is honestly some of the best written fantasy I've ever read. And I've read a good amount. The world and lore is so intriguing and the characters have really good development. You should definitely give these books a shot.

34 Bone - Jeff Smith
35 Earthsea - Ursula Le Guin

Loved these books as a young teenager. Much easier to read then some of her other books (such as The Left Hand of Darkness).

This was Harry Potter before Harry Potter, it deserves to be top 10-15 - Eorel

36 Hush Hush - Becca Fitzpatrick
37 The Kane Chronicles - Rick Riordan

Riordan Rocks!

Riordan - Orlemley

38 The Sword of Shannara - Terry Brooks

Classic high fantasy

39 The Dark Elf Trilogy - R.A. Salvatore
40 Dragonlance Legends - Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman

Seriously!? Terrible

41 The Once and Future King - T.H. White
42 The Farseer Trilogy - Robin Hobb

One of the most underrated novel ever!

43 The Riftwar Cycle - Raymond E. Feist
44 Guardians of Ga'hoole - Kathryn Lasky

I didn't really like this that much. I liked it, but I just liked Warriors and Harry Potter more. I'll try reading further, and I might change my opinion, but for now, Firestar Forever!

45 The Belgariad - David Eddings
46 Valdemar Series - Mercedes Lackey
47 The Books of Bayern - Shannon Hale

Fantasy world, power over the elements -- typical, yet Shannon Hale's books are just a lot more interesting than most. Razo is totally my favorite character!

48 Dragonkeeper - Carole Wilkinson

Set in ancient China. Good for culture and history learning -- as well as learning about dragons.

49 Twilight Saga - Stephenie Meyer

Worst of all time

Oh! Come on friends, you gotta be kidding me. The one of the few series which has described every emotion a sane person would feel, and it has given a wonderful and new definition and dimension for love, definitely deserves to be in top 5.

Everyone that hates it would be too cowardly to say it outside. They can type the hate on the internet because no one can see them.

Same for Harry Potter and The Cursed Child.

The truth hurts eh?

50 Outlander - Diana Gabaldon

Like 'Game of Thrones' this series has it all. I challenge anyone to read the first book and not scream in urgency for the next book. I consumed this series in two weeks last year and I'm still recovering.
