Top Ten Fantasy Books of All Time

Songsta41

The Top Ten

1 The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian
2 The Fellowship of the Ring

The Lord Of The Rings is a masterpiece; rarely do I use that term. As others have said, this wasn't the first high fantasy book ever written, but it's impact on popular culture was such that it's often regarded as such. Few books have left a lasting impression on me; the story, the characters and the underlying sadness - it's simply one of the greatest stories ever written in my opinion.

This book didn't start the whole fantasy genre. Don't be mislead. There were other books, stories and authors before. Its not the first and its not the best. Jackson-Movies marketing-propaganda made them first and best, what is of course not truth - dubbelvla

This book started the whole fantasy genre. It is the top in plot crafting, and the use of language is beautiful. A great book!

Do I really need to say anything about this THIS SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE FOLKS J.R.R. TOLKIEN IS EPIC!

3 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

It should be below the Hobbit.

I love this book!

Best of all time!

This book should be ahead of, "Fellowship of the Ring"

4 The Bloody Crown of Conan
5 Death's Master - Tanith Lee
6 The Hobbit

Although the Lord of the Rings is my Favourite Book of all time, I voted for the Hobbit for the memories it gave me as a child (and nostalgia upon multiple re-reads! ). Simply, no book has ever matched the feeling of adventure in this (mostly) light hearted standalone masterpiece. This book is timeless.

This is not a fantasy book genre; it's a children story, the same like Narnia or Andersen stories; don't be in error, because You will have to say that Smurfs are also fantasy genre stories - dubbelvla

This book is my favorite I can read it over and over again it gave me so much memories and the movies are the best

7 The Conquering Sword of Conan
8 The Savage Tales of Soloman Kane
9 El Borak and Other Desert Adventures
10 Bran Mak Morn: The Last King

The Contenders

11 Legend - David Gemmell
12 Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Nice set of books, but way too childish and predictable to be on the same scale of some of the real greats

How the hell is this not higher on the list?

It is the best

Great book but not the best. HOW COULD THE BRILLIANT MORTAL INSTRUMENTS NOT BE IN THIS LIST!

13 The Hunger Games: Mockingjay

This is science fiction. - ProfessorMercury

14 The Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss

Seriously the best book series ever, although the last book are yet to be published. The character and world building are perfect, the story is beautiful, and it will make you weep and laugh.

This is such a good book series. I love it. I love the way the author writes these books. It doesn't even matter that both of the books are thick, because you just disappear into the story and Kvothe's life. I don't understand why people don't like this more. It has mystery, fantasy, life and everything.

15 The Stand

One of the greatest Stephen King book

The best fantasy book!

16 Inheritance

Great literature

17 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Why is this number 7 and after Mockingjay (even though I hate to say it) Mockingjay wasn't as good as the first two and somehow it ends up with a higher ranking than both Hunger Games and Catching Fire...don't get me wrong it was still a great book but the other two were better - mpgami

It may not be the absolute best, but it needs to be higher than Mockingjay.

Okay... Is there any chance that I could vote for two more books?

18 Magic Bites

If you like fantasy..you MUST try this paranormal fantasy! It's the first author of fantasy/Paranormal Romance that I've ever become ADDICTED to.
Story revolves around Kate Daniels..a kick-butt mercenary that begins a search for her (like family) handler's murderer and runs into many other mysteries, as well...that leads to the most AMAZING imaginative adventure you will NEVER forget!

Ilona Andrews is a husband-wife writing duo, by the way.

19 The Sword of Shannara - Terry Brooks

Not quite The Lord of the Rings, but well written and plenty of action. I liked most of the character and found it to be a fun book. Well worth reading.

After Lord of the Rings, likely the best.

20 Eragon

Seriously, this blatant star wars rip off is even on this list?

How can you not consider this book as number one? It shows how mysterious the world truly is!

Meh not good

And had a movie that the author prays no one ever acknowledges that it existed

Yeah, sure ok. I didn't see that, I couldn't get past his poor writing.

21 The Last Olympian

Most awesome book ever! Vote #1

22 The Silmarillion
23 The Eye of the World
24 Magician
25 The Name of the Wind
26 American Gods
27 Swan Song
28 Storm Front (The Dresden Files)
29 The Hunger Games

Okay, seriously? Is this site run by 11 year olds now? There's no reason that the Hunger Games should be on every damn "best books" list, let alone any "best" list at all. To be frank, the trilogy was actually pretty disappointing/poorly written.

Should not be on a top 10 list. Just should not.

It's good, but is nowhere near the best.

30 A Game of Thrones
31 The Thief of Always
32 Kingdom Keepers IV: Power Play
33 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
34 Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

In this book, Harry Potter takes a darker route.

35 The Battle of the Labyrinth
36 The Sea of Monsters
37 The House of Hades
38 The Mark of Athena

Sure, let's just list off all the Percy Jackson books until we run out, then move on to Riordan's other series... - mpgami

39 The Warrior Heir
40 The Son of Neptune
41 The Lost Hero
42 The Titans Curse
43 New Spring: The Novel

Moiraine is the best! - Merilille

44 Divergent

How is this not mentioned already? I mean, come on. This was better than the Kingdom Keepers, the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. And I've read and reread all three series - mpgami

45 Eighth Grade Bites
46 City of Bones
47 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
48 Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse

The best book of percy jackson series no dopt

49 Master of the Five Magics

It's what inspired Megadeth's Five Magics.
