Top Ten Fantasy Books of All Time
Lord of the Rings, in my opinion, is the number one book everyone should read at some point in their life. The entire thing is beautifully written, masterfully complex and epic. But that doesn't mean it's a normal, grim fantasy series at all. It's at times, funny, scary, badass, and character-driven as well.
You have to read this.
The Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece. Rarely do I use that term. As others have said, this wasn't the first high fantasy book ever written, but its impact on popular culture was such that it's often regarded as such.
Few books have left a lasting impression on me. The story, the characters, and the underlying sadness - it's simply one of the greatest stories ever written, in my opinion.
Probably my #1, because it's such a classic fairy tale.
Although The Lord of the Rings is my favorite book of all time, I voted for The Hobbit for the memories it gave me as a child (and nostalgia upon multiple re-reads!). Simply, no book has ever matched the feeling of adventure in this (mostly) light-hearted, standalone masterpiece.

Deathly Hallows was my favorite Harry Potter book. I hated the epilogue, but other than that, this was a great conclusion to the series. Harry Potter is not comparable to Lord of the Rings, but it is the most popular fantasy series ever, and you will love it if you read it.
I think everyone should give it a try.

This should be way higher, along with A Storm of Swords, which is the best of the series.
Seeing as it inspired the greatest fantasy TV show of all time, it should be higher.

American Gods is Neil Gaiman's best book. It's honestly a total masterpiece and should be way higher on this list.
Not quite The Lord of the Rings, but well-written and full of action. I liked most of the characters and found it to be a fun book.
