Top Ten Fantasy Books of All Time

The Top Ten
1 The Fellowship of the Ring - J. R. R. Tolkien

The Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece. Rarely do I use that term. As others have said, this wasn't the first high fantasy book ever written, but its impact on popular culture was such that it's often regarded as such. Few books have left a lasting impression on me. The story, the characters, and the underlying sadness - it's simply one of the greatest stories ever written, in my opinion.

This book started the whole fantasy genre. It is the top in plot crafting, and the use of language is beautiful. A great book!

2 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll

Probably my #1, because it's such a classic fairy tale.

3 The Hobbit - J. R. R. Tolkien

Although The Lord of the Rings is my favorite book of all time, I voted for The Hobbit for the memories it gave me as a child (and nostalgia upon multiple re-reads!). Simply, no book has ever matched the feeling of adventure in this (mostly) light-hearted, standalone masterpiece. This book is timeless.

This book is my favorite. I can read it over and over again. It gave me so many memories, and the movies are the best.

Amazing plot that brings you into the story.

4 The King of Elfland's Daughter - Lord Dunsany
5 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - C. S. Lewis

One of many classics. Still deserves a high spot on the list.

6 The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian - Robert E. Howard
7 The Sword in the Stone - T.H. White

An absolute classic. Everyone knows this story.

8 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - J. K. Rowling

Harry Potter is the best book that I've ever read. Storyline, creativity, plot, characters, and the Wizarding World - even I love the movie too.

Hey, I thought Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' ranking should be higher.

This book should be ahead of "Fellowship of the Ring."

9 The Master and Margarita - Mikhail Bulgakov
10 The Last Unicorn - Peter S. Beagle
The Contenders
11 A Wizard of Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin
12 A Game of Thrones - George R. R. Martin

This should be way higher, along with A Storm of Swords, which is the best of the series.

Seeing as it inspired the greatest fantasy TV show of all time, it should be higher.

13 Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief - Rick Riordan

It's just too good. It needs to be higher on the list.

How the hell is this not higher on the list?

A great start to an underrated series.

14 Legend - David Gemmell
15 Magician - Raymond E. Feist
16 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - J. K. Rowling

Started what's arguably the most famous book series of all time.

An amazing start to an amazing series.

17 Daughter of the Empire - Raymond E. Feist and Janny Wurts
18 The Princess Bride - William Goldman
19 Watership Down - Richard Adams

I love it. I also love His Dark Materials.

20 The Eye of the World - Robert Jordan
21 Howl's Moving Castle - Diana Wynne Jones

Created an incredible anime movie.

22 The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss
23 American Gods - Neil Gaiman
24 The Black Company - Glen Cook
25 The Sword of Shannara - Terry Brooks

Not quite The Lord of the Rings, but well-written and plenty of action. I liked most of the characters and found it to be a fun book. Well worth reading.

After The Lord of the Rings, likely the best.
