The movie had gotten dark before they came along. Mufassa had just died, Simba was chased out of the Pride Lands, Scar and the hyenas had taken over and the entire Pride Lands were so dark that they were unrecognizable. Now Simba's dying and there are buzzards flying around him. The movie really needed some light humor.
Then along came Timon and Pumbaa.
Not only did they save Simba, but they gave the movie a much-needed comedy boost. Best comic relief sidekicks ever!
