Top 10 German Metal Songs of the 21st Century
German metal scene has always been among the strongest ones, dating back to the 70s with some of the first bands that experimented with metal - Lucifer's Friend and Scorpions.German metal scene was also very good in the 80s and 90s - Kreator, Blind Guardian, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Sodom, Edguy, and many more.
In the 21st Century German bands are pretty good as well - some old bands are still great and some new ones got the attention of the metalheads. I made this list because the newer songs remain less known than the songs of the 20th century.
Traditionally, power metal is the strongest German subgenre but they are also good at extreme metal - mostly thrash metal and death metal.
While all symphonic metal bands tend to be good in general, Blind Guardian nailed the symphonic metal subgenre. They also raised the bar and fully defined symphonic metal.
Symphonic elements aren't something new in Blind Guardian discography - they gradually started to include them in 1992, with the song Theatre Of Pain (bonus track version) - it was symphonic metal before Nightwish and all other new bands in the subgenre that emerged in the late 90s and early 2000s.
"Wheel of Time" is one of the most epic and powerful songs that Blind Guardian have ever produced, and considering the rest of their discography, that's saying a lot.
I will never be able to choose between this one and Wheel Of Time. And I hesitated a lot (which one to put at #1).
One of the best instrumentals out there.
Kreator are a great band. And this song is very good, too. But I didn't put it very high because even though technically it's a 21st century song, it sounds pretty much like an 80s song (thrash hasn't changed much over time). I put higher songs that represent some newer developments.
From their stellar 2018 album.
