Top 10 Greatest Allied Nations of World War II

The Top Ten
1 Soviet Union

It is said that the war was won with American Steel, British Intelligence, and Soviet Blood. BLOOD. Soviet Union lost 24 million people, 11 million being in the military. Soviet Union was destroyed from the war, industrial and manpower. Sure the allies would struggle without the US, have a longer bloodier war without UK, but the allies couldn't win without the Soviet Union. From that win, Soviet Union was a mere shadow of its former self, but it was the wall that stopped Germany. The endless advances ended in Leningrad, Moscow and Stalingrad. Russia was mauled the Germans, and the same in return. The Soviet Union as a nation held back Germany's full might, something that no one else sharing a land border with Germany could. Russia held them back, and killed them. Russia had the most sacrifice, and did the most work. Therefore, Russia/Soviet Union/USSR did the most to help win world war 2.

The Soviets were fighting over 200 divisions while in the western front(America, Britain etc.) were fighting 10. 95% of the casualties against the axis was in the eastern front. The Soviets lost more men in one battle(The Battle of Stalingrad) than all the other allies lost combined all throughout the war. The major turning point in the war was the Battle of Stalingrad. The Soviets took all of Manchuria which was a major oil supplier of the Japanese. The Soviets were fighting alone in the Eastern front while Britain had support from America, Canada, Australia, etc. all throughout the war. The Soviets flag was on Berlin.

Russia defeated Germany. America gets all the credit when they came near the end (1944) of Europe. Russia got the most hell, and pushed through the most. America only took France back. Denmark, Norway, etc were all of Russian liberation

To say that Russia, which had the biggest death count and contributed to what could have been the major turning point for the axis defeat at Stalingrad, were not the most important factor to a shared and faster victory over Nazi Germany is a sham.

2 United States of America The United States of America, or the U.S.A. for short, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, 48 of them are contiguous states. There are two other states, Alaska and Hawaii, which are north and south of the contiguous states, respectively. The United States declared its independence from the British Empire in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence. They won their independence in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. Its capital, Washington D.C. (District of Columbia) is defined by imposing neoclassical monuments and buildings including the iconic ones that house the federal government's 3 branches: the Capitol, White House and Supreme Court. Though it has no official language, English and ...read more.

I am Canadian and we like to jab the US but being pushed down to number 6 is plain disrespectful. Yes they sat out the first half, yes they only joined when it suited them but when they hit the start button, the proved to be the most powerful ally. Without the US, we probably would not have won. I think we should think about that when ranking countries. Russia would have never "defended" anybody else. Russia was the bad guy for the first half. They should not be number one. China Should be 10. They just had numbers. They could have never taken the fight outside China. UK, US, France, Canada and rest of commonwealth were the major ally players when you look at troop numbers, technology, financial backing, infrastructure, win ratio and the sheer amount of engagements they participated in. Hands down.

I'm also Canadian and I have to say the USA did play major roles. Without them the war would've most likely been won by the Nazis. If I had to make a list I would pick UK 1, France 2, USA 3, Soviet Union 4, and Canada 5. All the countries played very major roles. Without Canada we could've lost as well, along with UK and France. The also ended the war but did it in a very violent way (ahem, nukes). All of the countries had their pros and cons and played major roles, but the US did a lot to help.

The fact of the matter is the United States had a history of trying to stay neutral of Europe's wars. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor they almost completely wiped out the American pacific fleet. Fighting on two fronts against two very strong and determined enemies the American military was the weight that tipped the balance of the war.

We may have joined late, but we were sending massive aide to the allies the entire war. Britain was barely hanging on with the Battle of Britain. Japan knew that America was a threat, which is why Pearl Harbor was attacked, without America in the war, it is very likely that the axis could have won...

3 United Kingdom The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly shortened to United Kingdom, UK or Britain is a Sovereign State located of the Northwestern coast of Europe. It is a Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy currently lead by Monarch Queen Elizabeth II and its current prime minister is ...read more.

The United Kingdoms lasted past the Blitz if it Had not millions of bomber planes would have either gone to the Soviet union or even the United States and that would have caused production penalties. Great Brittan is also were they launched the thousands of soldiers to gain a turing point in Europe.

The United Kingdom had endured the entire length of the War, in some parts alone, and other parts surrounded.

It declared war, along with France, on Nazi Germany in honor for its guaranteeing obligations to Poland, which was invaded by Germany. Though failed to act through on any further obligations to save Poland (in the hope being at War with 2 Powers were enough to make Germany ask for Peace), the Brits were unprepared for the 6 following years of War.

Months later, with its best forces surrounded, overseas colonies seized, and food running out, hope seemed to have lost. Yet the British Empire didn't surrender, it fought back. It evacuated its army from Dunkirk, deployed its navy across the World and was able to slowly close the Mid Atlantic Gap which had depleted its imports.

Even with Britain under Siege, its cities bombed and casualties mounting, they didn't surrender.

It managed to hold on, it defeated the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, slowly ...more

Britain was always in the war, and lasted more than a month unlike Poland.
If it wasn't for them, Axis could've won.

Britain has always backed up for her fellow allies.

4 Poland Poland, officially the Republic of Poland, is a country in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine and Belarus to the east; and the Baltic Sea, Kaliningrad Oblast (a Russian exclave) and Lithuania to the north. With a population of approximately ...read more.

One of the largest allied contributions, excessively brilliant pilots, probably bravest troops of WWII ready to sacrifice life for Poland. The army with the old equipment withstood a good bit of time against the suppression of Third Reich and Russia.

Lasted 1 month despite being attacked by all sides by 2 powerful countries.
And then they still fought hard as rebellions.
Also, why not?

Polish troops fought in all major theaters in WWII. They were tasked with closing the Falaise pocket and capturing Montecassino. However, out of all the nations in WWII, they were the ultimate losers.

Why isn't Poland number one? Poland was occupied by the Nazis for the longest, and yet the Polish people never once gave up in their struggle for liberation.

5 France France, officially the French Republic, is a sovereign state comprising territory in western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. The European part of France, called metropolitan France, extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. France spans 675,000 km2 (251,000 mi2) and has a total population of 67 million (data from 2017). ...read more.

By far, the most disgustingly collaborationist as well as opportunist Country in History.

Early country that declare war on nazy germany (the other is UK), its true that france was defeated quickly but their goverment in exile is continue the war against axis and prove a significant force during allies wars at africa and europe.

Weakened the German tanks despite losing the battle, so UK can help.

6 England England, previously the Kingdom of England, is a constituent country of the United Kingdom along with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

England can trace its history as far back as the 10th century, but modern England didn't start till the Norman Invasion of 1066. In 1535, England annexed Wales and in 1603 shared a Monarch with Scotland, which eventually led to the Unification of the two into 'Great Britain', in 1801 Ireland was incorporated forming the 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland', in 1922, 6 counties stayed in the UK while the rest of Ireland declared Independence. ...read more.

British innovation, determination, guile and diplomacy were their greatest strengths.

American money, mass production, innovation and strength in numbers.

Russia strength in numbers, ridiculous sacrifice in sheer numbers and determination.

Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and India loyalty, dependability, determination and the sheer fact that we could get one over on the Brits! Pommies! )

That's what won the war. So tired of hearing America won the war. So far from the truth and so disrespectful to all involved. I would be embarrassed if I was an American by the sheer ignorance that sometimes comes out. Absolutely baffling!

Although they didn't actually manage to beat back the nazis ever, and although they were pretty inactive early in the war, England held off the Nazi powers long enough for the Allies to regroup and attack. That was a pretty critical moment, the only other most important one being stalin's victory over hitler. However, shown by Nazi victory over the first 5 months of the attack, and seeing that the Nazis were only pushed back during the winter when the weather was on the side of the russians, England would be, personally, considered greater as they weren't allied with their weather, although Russia in itself was a VERY influential power.

Britain was better because it held out against Italy and Germany on its own for one year. Britain was also better than the stupid communists because they were able to hold of the Germans when they were totally out numbered when the Soviets barely survived even when they had superior numbers.

Great Britain was the heart of the allied powers. They were the first to help Poland and after they broke enigma, they where controlling the antlantic, air and sky.

7 Canada Canada is a country in North America that is next to the United States, and it's the 2nd largest country in the world by area (size is 9.985 million km²). This country has 10 provinces, and 3 territories. Canada became a dominion on July 1, 1867. Its 10 provinces are: Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, ...read more.

Remove China and Russia from the top 5 and everything else here is pretty much correct. Except for the Philippines being so low. They should be much higher. Canada kept England alive by sending supplies to them so they can take the brunt of Hitler's rage. Canada was a major player in D-Day and liberated many parts of Europe, specifically the Netherlands. Canada provided a million trained (not cannon foder) personal to the war effort. Canada had the third largest allied fleet.

Out of a population of 11 million, 1 million men and women served in uniform. Participated in the Battle of Britain, D Day landings, Dieppe Raid, Invasion of Italy, and Canadians spearheaded the attack that liberated the Netherlands. Canada is one of many countries that is overlooked when thinking about who contributed to the war effort.

Without Canada the allies would've got beat so bad. We provided so much for the top countries on the list and how are the Russians first last time I checked they killed 30 million Ukrainians in the 30s. We also saved Russia's ass a couple times and we provided USA with uranium for the bombs dropped on Japan. The USA and britian would send the Canadians in first to get slaughterd so they're troops didn't have to

Canada was a curtail part in the war sending supplies to Britain and taking back the Netherlands.

8 China China, officially the People's Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of more than 1.4 billion. Cool Country. You should all know that it has the saddest events that ever happened during world war two. 1931-1945. Unless if you'd rather sit there, and watch a movie about China juggling three wars at once, trying to win. You can't just tease a country. Like Japan (the country that invaded it), China was nearly got a atom bomb dropped on it when it stopped fighting in November 1950 (It's civil war). It had to help it's best ally (friend), North Korea. Since China was only age one (October 1st, 1949), the allies of South Korea spared it from being nuked. Then, just three years after the end of the Korean War, another war (Cultural Reverloution) begun, and lasted for then total years. Then the Vienalm War. Finally, after that, the Cold War. When the Cold War ended, China deserved a few decades of peace...so please.
China, Russia, and North Korea are best allies!

China attracted at least 60~70% Japanese ground forces in WW2. Without the Chinese effort, the allied would have had to deal with another million Japanese forces. The Japanese may attack USSR from the east, while Nazis kept pushing from the West. If Soviet Union was defeated, the WW2 history would have been changed, because I really don't believe the US and Britain alone were able to handle German and the entire Japanese forces on ground

Many people forget china roles in ww2 however china did fight for the longest and contrary to popular believe china wasn't incompetent in war like Italy also she wasn't conquer. China suffer great loses yet she still continue to fight. The dragon is truly formidable.

China fought for the longest, 1937 - 1945, suffered the second highest casualty and tied down most of Japan's ground force, without China the allies would've had a much harder time winning the war.

9 Denmark

Denmark was conquered in 2 hours. How were they a great allied nation? Least alone in the top ten

Denmark was conquered in 2 hours. How were they a great allied nation?

Don't think Denmark even had a standing army lye alone fought. Back

10 Netherlands The Netherlands, informally Holland, is a country located in north-western Europe with overseas territories in the Caribbean. It is the largest of four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Netherlands consists of twelve provinces, and borders Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, with a North Sea coast-line to the north and west. It shares maritime borders with the United Kingdom, Germany, and Belgium in the North Sea. The Dutch continued the war in Europe with a sizeable Navy as well as land and air forces. The Dutch merchant fleet was one of the largest in the world and said for the largest part for the allied forces. The Netherlands East Indies had was a major oil producing country. It was defended against the Japanese by Dutch, British, American and Australian forces (Abdacom). Under Dutch rear admiral Karel Doorman the combined fleet fought a desperate battle against the invading japanese navy. The Dutch fought troughout the war.

Netherlands fought against both Germany and Japan. All they got in the end was Indonesian independence.

Anne Frank: she was a young Jewish girl living in the Netherlands, but she was spared for 2 years because the Dutch goverment annoced for all Dutch Jews to go into hiding. But she was discovered 2.5 years after.

Why them? They lost within a week?

The Contenders
11 Greece Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic, is a country in Southeast Europe. It is situated on the southern tip of the Balkans, and is located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Fist victory of the allies against Italy. Also they delayed Nazis to go to Russia cause of battle of Crete and they were frozen like morons.

Denmark/France higher in Rank than Greece? Please respect people that actually fought for their countries and didn't concede

Greece was the third most important country in WWII.

They holded back the Italians and slowed down stuff when Nazis had to come in. Greece did a few but some important things

12 Australia Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a sovereign country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. With an area of 7,617,930 square kilometres (2,941,300 sq mi), Australia is the largest country by area in Oceania and ...read more.

We should be in the top ten. After all, we did stop the Japanese for the first time in ww2 with no training, sickness, no proper equipment and had to fight the Japanese in the jungle.

The aussies stopped the Japanese from taking over Papua New Guinea and were a key part of German defeat in the Middle East.

Australia fought in pacific, Africa, Europe. Crete, Greece, India, Burma. Bomber command in Europe had several RAAF squadrons, Sunderland maritime patrol. Rats of tobruk held off rommell against the odds.

Australia fought bravely and well I voted for Canada but admire Australia's fight against Japan

13 New Zealand New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. ...read more.

New Zealand fought in two world wars that it did not have to. We supplied the RAF with some stellar pilots for the defense in the Battle of Britain and was constantly put into battles that were complete hell, (irrelevant to WW2 but the ANZACs got one of the worse deployments in the form of the battle for Gallipoli). We also had very brave soldiers who constantly put their lives on the line for places that they had never heard before. (Charles Upham is the only frontline soldier to receive 2 Victoria Crosses and is a native of Canterbury). We may have not been the biggest contributors in the war or have the most glorious stories of war, but you can't deny the huge courage and sacrifice New Zealand did for the world during World War 2

New Zealand was a weak and still young country back then, but gave Britain and allies all they had, including their navy, and their Air Force witch they offended many pilots to join the Royal Navy. And New Zealand was the first countries to officially declare war with Germany witch takes a lot of balls being such a young country

14 Norway Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a sovereign and unitary monarchy in Northern Europe whose territory comprises the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula plus the island Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard. ...read more.

The first battles of WW2 was won in Norway and the Norwegian fleet helped UK a lot with transport, food and metal to build weapons. Norway was unprepared and wanted to stay neutral in the war, but when Germany attacked Norway they fought well and held off the Germans for two months. Norway also prevented Germany of getting nukes by sabotaging the labratory they had made in Norway.

Very important with their fleet. Also they sabotaged German nuke labs in Norway so that the Germans wouldn't get the atomic bomb.

They stopped the Germans from developing a nuclear bomb. How is this not in the top 10?

15 Yugoslavia A now-defunct country in Southeastern and Central Europe, Yugoslavia was established in 1918 and dissolved in 1992. Composed of several ethnic groups, the country faced significant political and social challenges, culminating in its breakup into several independent states. The capital was Belgrade, and the official language was Serbo-Croatian.

No country had lesser resources and at the same time have been attacked by so many different enemies and Axis collaborating nations.

Yugoslavia was the only country that was invaded by Nazi Germany that managed to free themselves.

You guys are all haters.

16 Turkey Turkey, officially the Republic of Turkey, is a transcontinental country in Eurasia, mainly in Anatolia in Western Asia, with a smaller portion on the Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country (with over 1.2 billion people), and the most populous democracy in the world. Its capital is New Delhi. Some other major cities are Mumbai, Chennai, and Ahemdabad. ...read more.

India's contribution to WW2 has been greatly ignored. India did not make the greatest contribution but it sure helped. More than 2 million (sadly untrained) Indians volunteered to fight alongside Britain (200,000 were forced). They terrorized German tank divisions in Africa, fought the Japanese in Burma, took part in the invasion of Italy, and played a significant part in battles in the Middle East. Many British, French authority figures have acknowledged this and explained India should receive credit for high contribution.

India without doubt is best. they gave raw materials and huge amount of military soldiers. over 2.5 MILLION!

18 Philippines The Philippines, officially the Republic of the Philippines, is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia. It is situated in the western Pacific Ocean and consists of around 7,641 islands that are broadly categorized under three main geographical divisions from north to south: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. ...read more.

Agreed with another poster. Philippines played a huge role due to it's location and the amount of resistance. I wouldn't put it in the top 10 due to the fact this ranking is based on sheer power and influence but I would definitely put it above Yugoslavia, Mexico, Greece, Denmark and Norway. No offense to those countries but Philippines simply had location location location.

They were one of the most bravest countries of World War II as they fought the Japanese.

Fought Americans for 1-3 years
Fought Japanese for 4 Years
Fought Spanish for 333 Years
Spanish was losing and decided to give it to America worth 20M and after 3 years, Japan went to the PH and fought Americans and Filipinos.

Philippines is the bravest country ever.!

19 Brazil Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is the largest country in both South America and Latin America. At 8.5 million square kilometers (3,300,000 sq mi) and with over 214 million people, Brazil is the world's fifth-largest country by area and the sixth most populous. Its capital is Brasília, ...read more.

From August 1944 until March 1945, the Brazilians fought on feared the Gothic line. One of the last great defenses drawn up by the Germans in the war.

The Nazi-fascist lines theoretically stretched by 280 km from the coastal region of the Tyrrhenian Sea, going from the West, in the regions of Italian Carrara and La Spezia, through the chain of mountains formed by the Apennines, ending to the East, in the areas of Pesaro and Rimini, on the Adriatic Sea foreshore.

Its main purpose was to slow the most, and if possible to block Allied advances in the campaign of Italy.

Everybody forgets that Brazil pushed the italian enemy line back, with the help of Americans. For a country that was not prepared for war, Brazil did a great job.

20 South Africa South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of Southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana ...read more.
21 Mexico Mexico, officially the United Mexican States, is a federal republic located in North America. The country is located between the U.S. and Central America, and is known for its Pacific and Gulf of Mexico beaches and its diverse landscape of mountains, deserts, and jungles.

Didn't know Mexico was in it? So did I, but after research the U. S would get killed a lot by 2 sides, but forget that.

Mexico is one of the countries that supported the Allies of WW2, but later provided materials for the U. S to build their machines like Navy Boats. Admit it without Mexico's materials you would get hit pretty hard with losing about a few million pounds of metals.

I'm glad that Mexico is at least on the list.

22 Romania

Romania contributed more than France in deafeating Nazi Germany, but the Allies refused to admit their contribution.

They were originally on the allied side if Russia didn't overrun Roman they wouldn't have helped
