Whenever he unleashed his voice, you could feel the raw emotion and evil he had burning inside him. His vocals helped shape Mayhem's legacy, and also helped to create a very vivid, dark atmosphere that to this day I still think is unmatched. Not only this, but he was also one of the best songwriters, writing many of Mayhem's black metal classics. His legacy will forever be remembered for all of eternity in the black metal community.
He expressed his suffering in his vocals and his lyrics. He sounded as though he was coming from the other side, as if already dead. He channelled it to us. I love it. Besides Live at Leipzig, I like listening to Morbid to hear more of him. The Year of the Goat has been a comfort to me. Why are there always people making insensitive remarks on these posts? It sounds like the jazz snobs of years ago.
He was Black Metal a very dark and secluded person that in his own mind was a walking corpse. You felt that when he growled into the microphone. Only if he was here now to continue his dark reign of terror.
Sorry but does anyone of you guys know that Dead was dead since 1991 and thatswhy he is not the vocalist on the mayham albums. I think you guys don't know it because if you would you wouldn't vote for him because YOU NEVER HEARD HIM IN ANY SONG!
Louis Cachet, (born Kristian Vikernes) more popularly known as Varg Vikernes, is a Norwegian musician, writer, and a convicted murderer and arsonist. He is known as the frontman of the one-man band Burzum (named after a word in the Black Speech, which is a fictional language in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings), which is considered one of the most influential bands in black metal history. He's also known for murdering Mayhem guitarist Euronymous and was sentenced to 21 years in prison in 1994. I refuse to hear any excuses for why Varg is not at the top of this list. Mayhem, which seems to be the one BM band that tops Burzum on all these lists, is a practice in 'Evil' and is really THE band of the BM 'Scene. ' Where as Burzum is far more beautiful, it paints a landscape, draws life from real darkness and the roots of Norse mythology, in the case of vocals, never have I heard shreaks and howls and cries with the amount of passion and torment and rage and darkness and sorrow in such pure form as Varg.
Varg's vocals on his earlier albums are fantastic. He sounds more like an animal being tortured than a human, and it adds so much evil atmosphere to his music.

His high pitch voice cannot be matched. If you are listening to him for the first time then I guarantee you get afraid and lower your headphone volume.

Olve Eikemo, better known by his stage name Abbath Doom Occulta, is a Norwegian musician who best known as the former frontman of black metal band Immortal and the current frontman of the band Abbath. Most talented Norwegian black metal musician. He can play both bass guitar and lead guitar he played drums on their Sons of Northern Darkness album, as well, he and Demonaz are the best black metal duo in my opinion.

Tomas Börje Forsberg, known by the stage name Quorthon (1966-2004), was a Swedish musician. He was the founder, songwriter, vocalist and guitarist of the band Bathory, which pioneered the black metal genre and is credited with creating the Viking metal style. He has a strange voice, but on that album, he learned to make it work perfectly, creating this grinding, tortured rasp, unlike any growled vocal.

Quorthon was absolutely incredible! Every other black metal vocalist tries to be like him. He is legendary and without a doubt should be #1
None compare to Quorthon. He most definitely deserves to be number one, however I am not too disappointed since I also really Dead as a Black Metal vocalist.

Ihsahn is a Norwegian composer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist. He is best known for his work with Norwegian black metal band Emperor. What makes Ihsahn better than most other black metal musicians is that he is open to the idea of experimentation. He doesn't live by the same black metal structure for all of his music. His music is very much more progressive than black metal, and I personally think it's better than Emperor. Why? Because he shows his true musicianship. Also, his voice with Emperor is absolutely insane, but in his solo albums, he songs like an angel. He's like the Mikael Åkerfeldt of black metal. Overall, Ihsahn is a true genius who doesn't think that wearing corpse paint and constantly projecting images of satanism is what metal is all about.
I can't believe he isn't higher on the list. His voice is my absolute favourite in BM (and almost all of music in general). His latest albums Arktis showcased his voice in the best way possible. With either Emperor or solo he always continues to astonish me with his vocals, his amazing guitar work and his overall skills to creat a perfect song.

Kristian Eivind Espedal, better known by his stage name Gaahl, is a Norwegian vocalist and artist. He is best known as the former frontman of Norwegian black metal band Gorgoroth. He is also the founder and frontman of Trelldom and Gaahlskagg. Gaahls vocals are simply amazing his shrieks sound like he is burned alive, pure, evil, sometimes even depresing. Also you can feel the raw true emotions every time when he opens his mouth, he deserve to be at least second on the list.
He is just amazing, look at his performance at Waken festival with Gorgoroth. My all time Black metal favorite are: Gaahl, Abbath, Mortus, Legion and Varg.
His shrieks are amazing. His growled vocals make him sound like Satan himself.

Attila's vocals on De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas are mixed (personally I prefer Dead's vocals over Attila's) but he is a great vocalist nonetheless. Just listen to some of his works with Tormentor

There many great Black Metal vocalists but Attila is one of the best. he's performance on de mistiris dom satanas sounded unhuman Daemon like.

Hat is probably the greatest black metal vocalist ever. He is one of the first, if not, the first to use high pitched shrieking in black metal. Hat has made every record he was in 10 times better with his evil vocals. It is a shame we only see him on just a couple of demos, an album, and half of an EP. Although he bears the unfortunate name of Hat (Norwegian for hate mind you) he will go down as the greatest black metal vocalist ever
I can't believe Hat isn't on the actual list. He sounded like Varg Vikernes on the Gorgoroth demos, but his high screeching sound on the first two Gorgoroth albums is awesome sounding as well.
In norwegian Hat means Hate, clearly he will spawn hate inside your head when you are listening to him.
He is a mysterious man. We know about him just a one thing - his vocal is the best of Gorgoroth

Darski was born Adam Michał Darski in Gdynia, Poland, raised Catholic, and started playing guitar at age eight. He goes by the stage name Nergal (naming himself after a Babylonian deity), and he is the founder, lyricist, main composer, frontman and manager of the band Behemoth, which he started when he was still a teenager. He also plays lead, rhythm and acoustic guitar. He deserves first position. Listen to "Conquer All" and see the difference.

Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven is the vocalist, lead and rhythm guitarist, bassist, and keyboardist for the Norwegian black metal band Satyricon. Satyr's voice just sent chills up my spine the first time I heard it. Deserves to be higher up.

For me "Under the Sign of Hell" is the most intense Black Metal Album ever created. The vocals, the drumming (Erik aka Grim did a great job here - RIP), the guitares, the composition everything is overhelming and really unique. Everything fits together perfectly and unleashes the blackest storm of hate.
