Greatest Death Metal Vocalists

1 Chuck Schuldiner (Death) Chuck Schuldiner (Death) Charles Michael "Chuck" Schuldiner (1967-2001) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist, best known as the founder and vocalist, guitarist and bassist of the American heavy metal band Death. He is considered the most influential figure in Death Metal, with some publications referring to Chuck ...read more.

#1. He innovated this extreme growling style

#2. His voice was insane and the craziest of all DM vocalists.

#3. He had the deepest death growl ability.

#4. He was a lead guitarist and a lead vocalist as well. (takes too much talent too play two such major roles alone).

#5. He was the father of Death Metal and the founder of the best Death Metal band ever! - Nord666

He is just the Godfather of Death Metal. He could growl very deep on the earlier albums but also could almost scream on the newer ones. On Spiritual Healing the vocals sounded almost like the ones on Cause of Death from Obituary. His voice is very manifold. All hail the godfather and R.I. P m/

He's encompassed all forms of death metal singing: The more brutal type like in Death's earlier work, the more high pitched type in Death's earliest work, and then the point in the middle in Symbolic. Truly an amazing and talented vocalist.

Just the best. This guy can do some crazy riffs while singing, and his vocals on his cover of Painkiller are more high pitched than that of rob halford (the guy who originally made it, he’s from Judas Priest). All the while, he has a very recognizable voice in death metal, and his growls are bone chillingly low. Plus, he pretty much founded death metal, and few bands are even near as influential as him and the greatest death metal band, Death! It’s funny though, because his band’s name would name the genre too.

2 Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth, Bloodbath) Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth, Bloodbath) Lars Mikael Åkerfeldt is a Swedish musician, prominently known as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of progressive death metal band Opeth, as well as being the former vocalist of death metal supergroup Bloodbath for three albums up until 2012. ...read more.

He's awfully talented, his voice is like snow falling symphony when he's singing with Opeth and it just turns into a monstrous growling when he's with Bloodbath!

Never saw such 180degree variations in my entire life anywhere else! - Nord666

He has some pretty monstrous growls in Opeth too, if you listen to their actually good stuff - EzzyEsbourne

Mikael has an incredible amount of talent, range, and finesse. He excels at clean and growled vocals, which automatically makes him better than james fisher

His voice is amazing... Please listen to The Leper Affinity before you vote for anyone else... He can sing clean vocals... Which suddenly turns into wicked growl.. Amazing.. Opeth/

If we were looking at this from a non-biased point of view, we would see that this man is the best death metal vocalist (and one of the best metal vocalists or even vocalists in general) by far. Absolutely NOBODY else has death growls that sounds this good. I don’t think that the word “growls” does this man justice. He death ROARS. Not only is he an amazing growler, but he has one of the most beautiful singing voices that I have ever heard, which is even more important. He can go from angel to demon or vice versa in the blink of an eye. And not only is his sound and technicality impressive, but he writes some of the deepest, most poetic lyrics that you are likely to hear in music. A true prodigy of his craft.

3 George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher (Cannibal Corpse)

great vocalist! He got insane high pitched screams and strong monstrous growls. He's style is very recognizable. He is perfect vocalist for cannibal corpse and He has also done some great job in his own melodic death metal band paths of possession, it's really great stuff, (maybe best vocal work he's ever done, if you don't know band you should seriously check it out). I would have thought that he's voice would fit to melodic death metal, but it was perfect.

One of the best death growlers in metal and masters of the "monstrous growl". Peter Tagtgren in "Nightmares Made Flesh" by Bloodbath is a close second. Corpse's newest album, A Skeletal Domain, is their best yet, and this guy really tears it up. Top notch death metal vocalist, in my opinion.

He is most skilled with his voice.

Much better than Barnes. Nowadays, Corpsegrinder has an awesome rasp to his voice due to years of brutal singing. But, it only makes him sound even more brutal

4 Johan Hegg (Amon Amarth) Johan Hegg (Amon Amarth)

Johan Hegg! This name defines everything about death Growl! This beast does everything can be told about growl. His voice is so balanced and so individual... Bah it can't be explained more.

His growls feel natural and flow very well with Amon Amarth's music. Its also surprisingly intelligible and accessible for a casual Death Metal listener. Johan is certainly a good vocalist, and honestly, Amon Amarth is the best band I'd consider a Death Metal mascot for contemporary time. - CrimsonShark

Johan once killed 1000 Jotun using only his voice.

The best!

5 Chris Barnes (Six Feet Under, ex-Cannibal Corpse) Chris Barnes (Six Feet Under, ex-Cannibal Corpse) Chris Barnes is an American musician mainly noted for his deep-throat vocals, explicitly violent lyrics. Barnes was a founding member of Cannibal Corpse before his dismissal and would later form Six Feet Under, which he fronts to this day.

This monster growl.

By far far the best

Chris Barnes was excellent on the first 4 Cannibal Corpse albums. But his work on Six Feet Under is mostly pretty abysmal.

His vocals in C.C and six feet under are incredible, he just gets more unique and better every album, No one grinds in a melody and sounds like a zombie out of a creek that's been drinking hydrologic acid as it's roaring at you.

6 David Vincent (Morbid Angel) David Vincent (Morbid Angel) David Justin Vincent, also known as Evil D, is an American musician who is best known as the former lead vocalist and bassist for the death metal band Morbid Angel as well as the bassist for Genitorturers.

I have a lot of respect for this man, he never fails to ace his work both as a bassist and as a vocalist. - Nord666

For me his voice makes the perfect death growl, many of the others either sound screechy like chuck schuldiner or like the cookie monster like george fisher

7 Frank Mullen (Suffocation) Frank Mullen (Suffocation) Frank Mullen, is the vocalist of the American death metal band Suffocation, and met band mates Terrance Hobbs and Mike Smith in high school.

His growls is brutal but still natural. I like when he squeal from growl and than show the most brutal powerful vocal in death metal music. I like that he does exhales. That's interesting because he does music where is inhales more often. With John Gallagher he is the best vocalist ever.

Just so much rage and power in his vocals. He changes it up from album to album too so great variety

yes bigga

8 Glen Benton (Deicide) Glen Benton (Deicide) Glen Benton is an American death metal musician. He is best known as the vocalist and bassist for the death metal band Deicide and was also a part of the band Vital Remains, where he has performed in recording sessions as well as live with them on a few occasions. ...read more.

I remember when I first heard Desire. I was already a fan of Morbid Angel, Entombed, Carcass, Suffocation etc. But when I heard Deicide and Benson's Vocals, I was blown away. He has this naturally demonic and aggressive voice that comes across fast and fluent. Early Deicide was at another level of speed, percussive brutality and heaviness.

He not only has a brutal voice but he can sing brutal and fast as well. He has the complete package.

Mikael Åkerfeldt's voice is brutal but what he lacks is speed and intensity like Glen Benton. To be a great death metal vocalist one has to be able to sing with such speed and intensity.

This guy is my hero! He hates God and tries everything he can to p*ss him off! That's what I love about him. I wish I could meet him someday.

9 Barney Greenway (Napalm Death) Barney Greenway (Napalm Death) Mark "Barney" Greenway is an English extreme metal vocalist, who has been a member of Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror, and Benediction.

Barney Greenway's vocals sound like a 20-foot monster ripping through the roof of a building... Powerful, deep, brutal, and massive. A great vocalist among the many great vocalists in death metal/grindcore/deathcore.

Technically it's grindcore, but what the hell. - Metalhead1997

#1 why? Benediction - Subcunsious Terror, Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption, the vocals are so intense, dark and brutal The BEST!

The most brutal, agressive and powerful harsh voice I've ever heard!

10 John Tardy (Obituary)

The most powerful growl I've ever heard..so hard to imitate..tardy's the best of all..!

He has a unique voice for the genre

Reminds me of Chuck Schuldiner during the Human era. Love this guy!

Along with corpsegrinder and Nathan explosion John Tardy is the death metal god

Jeff is classic. One of the best death metal vocalist of all time!

Songs like edge of darkness says why he should be number one.

His voice rip flesh from the bones.

A unique, crazy, but already classic voice. Jeff is getting older but his voice just doesn't change!

12 Angela Gossow Angela Gossow Angela Nathalie Gossow is a German vocalist, best known as the former lead vocalist for the Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy.

Angela Gossow makes most male death metal singers sound like pussies. All hail the goddess from hell!

Should be top 10 hands down the best female metal vocalist...

She is the goddess from hell

She has a wonderful voice

13 Dan 'Lord Worm' Greening (Cryptopsy)

Lord Worm's voice is complete madness. If you are a brutal death metal fan, he is your perfect choice!

Can't get gored more by anyone else! - Nord666

His growls are as powerful as corpsegrinder's and brutal as chris barnes' ones! And his scream in open face surgery is insane!

The second best, next to Sylvain Houde of 90's Kataklysm.

Ryptopsy's best his low shrieks accompineed by flo's highs are out of this world. even on once was not he made a very strong comeback and keeping his

14 Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity) Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity)

The best one in my opinion. His growls and screams are superb, sometimes even soft and gentle although still brutal, which makes him unique in the metal scene. On top of that his clean vocals are simply beautiful and so atmospheric. Whenever you see him perform live you know how much passion he puts into music!

The Man of dark tranquillity! His growls are soft and evil, dark and gloom. Mikael is much better than many others written up here.

Mikael has a truly unique and recognizable growl. He writes superb, artistic lyrics. And his clean vocals are excellent too.

He has a very notable rasp and scowl in his growling vocals, which gives Mikael a nice identity of its own in the Death Metal community. His baritone clean voice is also excellent. - CrimsonShark

16 Travis Ryan Travis Ryan

People need to actually listen to this guy before voting. I've ben listening to Extreme Metal for 27 years now and nobody has the most distinguishable growls and screams than Travis. He can also do these 'Melodic highs" where he sings and screams at the same goddamned time! People say its layered and processed but he does it live! HE DOES IT LIVE!

He has one the the strangest and most unique growling styles I have ever listened to. His death growls sound odd, but he can also unleash a inhuman scream. On their newest album he even combines screams with an almost clean sound.

His work on the last Cattle Decapitation's album is quite amazing. He don't just keep doing what he knows best, he constantly try new things, new technics, recreating the death metal vocals. A human beast live and in studio

Travis Ryan has a range that any other Death Metal vocalist would kill for. His low tones register on the Richter scale, and his high tones are sonic weapons. This guy is one of the best.

Great vocalist he should be top 5

22 Karl Willetts (Bolt Thrower)

He has a perfect deep brutal voice, not a screechy one, so you can feel the power of one of the best death metal bands, as bolt thrower, and you can hear the lyrics too.

Karl willetts and johan hegg are the best death metal vocalists

The perfect voice for the perfect band m/

If you listen how deep this guy whispers "speear... heaad" or the intensity of the growl at the beggining of "Eternal War" and if you still have doubts on who's the best (and one of the most unique) DM voice ever, search for medical help... Quickly!

He is the founder of metal band Wintersun for which he records all instruments. Before forming Wintersun, Mäenpää was best known for his role in the folk metal band Ensiferum.

Surprised to see him this high, but he deserves to be at least in the top 5. He sings amazingly both cleanly and uncleanly and he still sounds better than almost everyone who focuses on only one of those styles.
Hero in a Dream, Winter Madness, Battle Song, Death and the Healing, Sword Chant, Token of Time, Tale of Revenge and Guardians of Fate are some of his best. - wizardlarry

37 Mithun MK (Silent Images/Deus Ex Machina)

He destroys the arenas just with the vibration of his throat, and we are not even speaking about his stage performance. Delete all of his music files from your PC and go watch him live. Mithun MK will gnar, roar and growl the soul out of your flesh. alive and live.

Monstrous range and spectacular to watch live. Realpolitik by Silent Images is one of the most insane vocal performances I've heard

Prolly the best growler to come from south east Asia!

Easily the Dani Filth of Death Metal! Caught Deus Ex Machina in Adelaide a few years ago. Great frontman too
