He should be top 5 at least. his first film Citizen Kane is considered the greatest movie of all time and was made in 1941. He also directed The Third Man which is also a wonderful film.
It's depressing that this genius is only number 96. At least Kubrick is deservedly very high.

One of the all time great directors hands down.
One of the best directors in the world. The level of his diversity is on the level of Kubrick. All of his films have such beauty and sensitivity.

Slumdog Millionaire, Millions, 127 Hours, Trainspotting. Hands down the greatest director of the last 3 decades. - tuckrayl
Unconventional may be the best word to describe him.
A way of directing in which you can expect the unexpected, plus a brilliant way of storytelling, Boyle makes films that get into your brain, and they won't get of it in a long long time
With his portrait of claustrophoby; comedy; and subtle, not dramatic, sentimentalism, Boyle has become one of the greatest of our generations, and a really underrated one along with Paul Thomas, Wes Anderson
127 Hours, Trainspotting, Sunshine, Slumdog Millionaire, and 28 Days Later are among his best films

How can William Wyler be forgotten.
Movies such as Ben Hur, The little foxes surely cannot be underrated.
Once you've seen his touching motion pictures such as "Imitation of Life", "All That Heaven Allows", "Written on the Wind" or "A Time to Love and a Time to Die" you will wonder how comes he is not regarded as one of the top directors of his time (mostly the 1950s), and how his movies are so widely forgotten despite their commercial success. Back then, Sirk dug deep into the issues of society, and he spread values that didn't lose any relevance - maybe slightly altered, but still. Sirk openly talked about topics that weren't talked about until ten years later in pictures such as "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner". But apart from their content, the movies of Sirk are simply beautifully shot. Whether the snowy landscapes of "All that Heaven Allows" or the autumn leaves in the storm in "Written on the Wind", his visuals are both stunning and full of symbolic meaning. - Martin_Canine
