Greatest Male Rock Singers of All Timensen74
The Top Ten
He was the whole package. Unparalleled voice, able to perfectly interpret any song he sang, inventive composer of many classic rock songs, beautiful skills as a pianist and the most captivating stage presence in the history of rock. This combination probably will never again be seen.
YOUR THE BEST SINGER FREDDY MERCURY
ITS RITE THAT YOU ARE NUMBER ONE
Best singer of one of the best bands of all time! No one can disagree that he is a great singer, even if they don't like him. But who wouldn't like him. HE'S FREDDIE MERCURY. I'm betting you already know that. Why am I typing this into the text box. Because I can. OHH! Why did I just oh myself? I have to go sort out my life. - cbrann10
Amazing best singer in the history of rockV 48 Comments
Steve Perry is an Amazing singer. His vocal capability goes all over where he wants to fit. The emotion he has when he sings is phenomenal. Every song..he sings his heart out and it's like he sings to each one in the crowd. He's just an amazing Artist who well deserves to be number #1. Steve Perry to Infinity!
Nobody touches Steve Perry in vocal ability. Pure tones, effortless control and more emotion than most soul singers. Freddie was a great "performer" and I will always be a Queen fan, but in terms of range and control, couldn't touch Perry. My #1!
From his crystal clear vocals, to his perfect tone and pitch, This man could sing anything at anytime and hit notes no one else could. Mad vocals! He also Emotionally connected like no other singer could do. Full control and talent!
Second only to freddie mercuryV 129 Comments
What set Dio apart was his power. His ability to maintain such powerful notes up high makes it near impossible for most singers to cover him.
It's funny how all the guys with the higher voiced are at the top
Ronnie James Dio definitely had one of the best voices in the music industry. It was just downright amazing! So sad he died. He will definitely be missed.
Man on the Silver Mountain.V 8 Comments
While I do understand why people choose Freddie Mercury, Steve Perry and Dio, there is something otherworldly about Plant still, keeping up with amazing vocal ability throughout his life, from before Zeppelin, to today.
At his vocal gymnastic peak, Plant was unstoppable and untouchable. A Golden God. What set him apart from many others were the outrageous yet nuanced notes he brought to the microphone.
Gotta go with Robert Plant on this one. He may be my number one for this list but Freddy Mercury does have a very close second for me. What I don't understand is how Dave Grohl and Axle Rose made this list. Very surprising...
I'm a huge Led Zeppelin fan, and I think Robert Plant is an amazing vocalist, easily makes the top 10 for this least, and even the top 5. But, I don't believe he is on the top 3 best rock singers, he's great, but not the absolute best.
And with Axl Rose's voice, it's either a you love it or hate it. - VintagePetRaptor
Freddie Mercury overrated and more of a pop singer than a rock singer after that the 1970s. Robert plant is simply the best. Better range and he is stiil aroundV 16 Comments
I've listen to rock music for many year, 40 to be exact tough I have many rock singers who are among the best but axle roses voice embodies " ROCK " he or should I say his voice is the Oracle of rock.
Say what you want but there is no one that has the range and pitch that Axl has Ronnie James Dio and Steven Tyler are only 2 off the top of my head that come close and maybe Freddie Mercury - CrazyCanadian
Axl Rose receives so much hate. I love him, though. His voice is amazing. He is immensely talented.
Axl Rose is the bomb.V 10 Comments
Even though my favourite rock singer is Robert Plant and I'm a die hard Zeppelin fan, Dickinson deserves to be much higher on the list. And he is in my humble opinion the best live singer ever, with Freddie Mercury a close second.
Fantastic voice and amazing band.
By far the best live sounding singer ever. If you don't believe me just listen to any song live by iron maiden - Itckdos
How in the world isn't he first?V 7 Comments
No question, more range than Freddy mercury, as much power as Bono and to top it off he can scream like no one as much as I love Dave Grohl and James Hetfield they more control a shout where as Steve Tyler genuinely does sing
If we are talking about rock, pure rock, there is no comparion. Steven Tyler's voice is rock, and blows all of the other singers out of the water with ease, including Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant and Steve Perry put together. None of them could even come close to his vocal range, control, transitions and screaming in his prime, not even a bit.
Personally believe that he should be in number 1 or top five at least! He is essentially a rock GOD, I'm a huge aerosmith fan, but sadly not enough people appreciate this mans voice today, he brought bluesy vibes to hard rock as well as his talent with instruments, he truly is my hero.
Great range of notes, and maintained a great singing voice and had even gotten better over the decades unlike someV 10 Comments
The most soulful hard rock voice! Amazing range, power and versatility and such an operatic quality. He delivers with his heart and soul! He should definitely be in the top 5.
The man sings every song like his voice will be completely gone tomorrow. If there was a dictionary entry for the perfect singer, just put a picture of Lou Gramm.
Lou has a voice to which you can't stop listening plus tremendous song writing ability. In my book, he is the top and as one person wrote on YouTube, "Lou Gramm was a damn tsunami - 1977-1995." I fully agree with that statement!
Love Lous voice!V 17 Comments
How can Axel Rose be above him? Seriously he is the best. He can go as high as mount everest and then drop to as low as Pacific Ocean. He has even covered 'Rolling in the deep' of Adele-a pop queen, it's even better than original one and shows how amazing his voice and vocals are. He can scream as he has done so many of Linkin Park songs, and sinng so deep and emotionally in many of their songs like My December, Little things give you away, Leave out all the rest and many more. Next to him should be Freddie Mercury and then Jared Leto of 30 seconds to Mars.
Whatever he sang, he sounded like he meant every word. He could make you feel all kinds of emotions through his singing. One of his best feats is to switch from an angelic soft voice to a demonic loud scream in an instant, not a talent commonly found today. Sadly he was taken from us too soon. RIP Chester
Chester's voice does not die. He is the best singer ever. I don't care what other people think... But Chaz has a unique voice which is beautiful. He can singe very softly and scream too. Not a talent found commonly.
The bestV 33 Comments
He is not higher on this list because the average voter age is 12 years old.
Um. The king?...what is wrong with you people? Clearly Elvis.
Elvis should be number one. This list is not objective if you have Elvis on number 14! Are we serious?
Can I just say that Elvis should be lower? Elvis made the same music as African Americans but for his time he got more popular because he is white. Overrated just saying... - booklover24V 8 Comments
This dude has one of the best metal voices out there!
For the soul reason that I am a major sabbath fan and that ozzy deserves to be up their with axel rose, steven tyler, john lennon, and elvis. Freddie can keep his spot however someone needs to vote for bon jovi.
I love Ozzy so much. He's a great singer and a great songwriter. He's done good with Black Sabbath and he's still good solo. Ozzy is awesome! He's one musician I would love to meet if I could.
His name is JOHN Michael Osbourne. Not Percy Michael Osbourne. I really like Ozzy though.
Amazing songwriterV 1 Comment
Okay I love Linkin Park but Chris Cornell is by far a better singer than Chester. Chester had Chris on stage with him and Chester said Chris had the most beautiful voice in rock and roll which may not be true but he's better than Chester.
He deserves to be in the top 5. He never used falsetto like a lot on the list. Plus Cobain on 10?! What? This guy just mumbled. Cornell hit the notes like no other. I'm outta here. Cornell and Dio and Plant are the greatest singers of all time. Mercury too
Are people voting for the most popular or most iconic frontmen or for actually great singers? Because, with all due respect, Ozzy, Cobain and many more on this list, can't even touch Chris' ability. Popularity of the bands and their music is one thing, and even though in this Cornell doesn't fare that bad either, some bands are more popular with wider masses than his Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog or Audioslave. But in vocal ability, none can touch him, he's up there with Mercury and Plant for the top spots. Though one thing separates him from the rest, and that's his tone, and vocal character. None of the vocals on this list except for maybe Chester, have such a pleasant tone as Chris and that's what makes him the undisputed #1 for me. This is just a matter of taste I know. But ability-vise, he's up there with the other top two ;) Elvis Presley and Axl the screeching Rose above Chris? No way in hell, lol.
Listen to Birth Ritual and you will understand he is in the top 5of all timeV 20 Comments
Way too high. His tone appealed to some but that doesn't qualify him to be in the top 10 at all. His technique was terrible to the point that he lost his voice at the beginning of his career. No range, no versatility, no power, no resonance. No way he can be higher than let's say Ian Gillan, wake up fan girls.
Holy Crap! The GREATEST vocalist of all time at 22?! Are you people Crazy! This guy showed the world that no matter what giving up hope & bowing down to hardships is never option! A TRUE LEGEND!
One minute his voice is a soft rasp, next second he's screaming into the mic. MAGIC.
Listen to the MTV Unplugged concert and then tell me he doesn’t convey emotions through his words less than anotherV 11 Comments
You only need to listen listen to 21 Guns or Wake me up when September ends (especially the live version in 2005) to hear the raw emotion he can put into his music.
I am his biggest fan ever and see the coincidence that we were born on same date... Listening him since my childhood... Every song... Every line... Punched in my head...
He puts all of his emotion in his songs. You should listen to Wake Me Up When September Ends.
He's the best!V 12 Comments
Ian Gillan in his prime could scream higher than Plant and sing more melodically. Just slap on Child In Time for all the evidence you'll ever need. And he could eclipse his studio performances with even better live renditions. Listen to the same song from Made in Japan.
The best rock singer/lyricist that ever drew breath. Got the part for Jesus Christ Superstar album after Lloyd webber and Rice heard Child in time, He put the original scream in Gethsemene. Between 1969 and 1973 he was simply untouchable. The fact that you never here any singer who sounds like Gillan shows just how unique this guy is.
Freddie Mercury is obviously #1, but I'd put Gillan at #2 or #3. Gillan could do things that nobody else on this list could, with a strong baritone, strong tenor, and could scream higher than anyone else on this list. All talented metal singers sight him as their idol for a reason!
Ian is the best it's very true!V 6 Comments
He's one of the elite rock/metal singers today. His skills place him in one league with Freddie, Steve Perry, Chris Cornell, Michael Kiske, Rob Halford, Dio, Axl Rose, to name a few of his caliber. His tonal versatility is so unique that you won't believe this is the same singer - he's got at least 10 different voices (harsh, soft, demonic, angelic, aggressive, funeral, playful, spiritual, melancholic, ghostly, medieval retro voice; storytelling voice, polished voice for symphonic metal and raw for thrash … all they sound amazing).
The most passionate and emotive voice I've ever heard (I've heard all singers on this list).
Check this out and be conviced:
Demons And Wizards - My Last Sunrise, Heaven Denies, Fiddler On The Green, Path Of Glory, Crimson King;
Blind Guardian - Majesty, The Bard's Song (In the forest), Sacred Mind, Thorn, Sacred Worlds, Time What Is Time, Fly, The Curse Of Feanor, Otherland. - Metal_Treasure
A vocal god right here. This is the most addictive voice I've ever heard. His gorgeous tone is combined with technical skills at master class level.
This voice is extremely emotive, intense, expressive and powerful. The moodiness in his voice is literally unmatched. Nobody else switches from soft melancholic to harsh demonic tone like Hansi.
Evidence: ‘My Last Sunrise’ (by Demons & Wizards) and ‘Age Of False Innocence’ (by Blind Guardian). - Metal_Treasure
This ain't a list for the broken hearted
This man is number one on my list.
Livin' on a prayer
Number 19? You MUST be kidding. Come on New Jersey - support your man! Jon's voice is far superior to both Ozzy Osbourne and Kurt Cobain, neither of which were understandable in either song or speech. I like to be able to understand the words to a song I'm trying to "sing" along with. Just caught their "This House Is Not For Sale" show and he sounded every bit as good today as when I first saw him live in 1983.
Have to give Steve Perry props for the #1 spot, though. Amazing does not begin to cover his vocal range and immense talent. Sorry, Jon, but you're still #1 with this long time fan! Keep rocking!
He is a very good singer. One of the best in the world. Also, where are other great singers such as Alice Cooper, Dave Mustaine, Benjamin Orr, Glenn Danzig, and many other great singers? There are so many amazing frontmen in the music industry.
He should be in the top ten
The dude has some pipes!

Bon Scott #1 followed by Brian Johnson!
Long Live Rock And Roll!
Bon Scott is the greatest rock singer, poet, story teller of all time. His lyrics is what set AC/DC's music above all the rest. His songs either told a story or made a statement. Many people may not realize that he wrote the lyrics for Back in Black before he died, which may have been his best album, next to Highway to Hell, but his prior works were all strong too. After Brian Johnson found success singing Bon's songs on Back in Black, AC DC's song quality plummeted. Just compare the lyrics of For Those About To Rock with their earlier works. The death of Bon Scott was another tragedy for rock and roll.
Number one easy
This man along with AC/DC amazing riffs gave birth the best hard rock songs of all time. Their songs inspired many bands to come.V 2 Comments
Easily one of the rawest and best rock singers EVER! Deserves to be AT Least in the top 10
This list is ridiculous. This guy is the original rock god. Pure power and amazing voice. Just watch him perform other bands songs too. He does them better. Watch his freddie mercury tribute I want it all.
One of the greatest singers ever. So much emotion, combined with an underrated vocal range and an excellent feel for the song. Just listen to "Love, Reign O'er Me" or "Listening to You/See Me, Feel Me" and you'll be convinced.
Ozzy Osbourne number 1, Daltrey no 21?. Is the world mad? A true one off, amazing range and passion, uniquely British artist.V 6 Comments
Great Voice... Powerful voloumptious clear effortless... One of the best singers
Please! Cobain, Rose, Halford, Tyler, Roth, Dio, Perry? Rodgers was and is outstanding, with a voice that has lasted beyond tastes, trends and "sounds" of a particular decade. I wont argue that I would possibly rank Mercury as higher but certainly not the others. Rodgers is superb and Daltrey should only be a number or so below him in this list. I think some of the voters haven't heard any music pre 80s-90's music
He has the best voice in blues rock. He can sing sweet melody too just listen to "Seagull" which is based entirely on his vocals. But post Bad Company he made some weird collabrations and which cost him his listenable songs Unfortunately he never came back except for a brief time fronting Queen. That too was not a particularly good choice since he was rather unfairly put down by Mercury fans despite doing a great job
I would argue he was better than Mercury, I would certainly rather hear him any time. A shame he is forgotten.
Best pure Rock N Roll Singer ever.V 9 Comments
Just, hands down, one of the most epic singers of all time. Fast or slow, Burnley's talent will always show!
How could every one forget him he is an awesome singer he should be at least in top 20s
The greatest and most honest voice in rock music.
John Lennon should be number 1. He's classic and his sound will never die! - booklover24
Incomparable in every way and manner. The best there is and ever was!
Absolutely number one, hands down!V 2 Comments
Adam gontier got me into rock. 3dg and saint asonia are great and animal I have become is one of my favorites
Deserves to be so much higher.
I've always thought that he had one of the best voices in rock.
Why the hell is he on 49?
The best singer of all time!
The best rock singer ever!
He's a songwriter, not a musician. His bass playing is rudimentary at best and his singing voice can be put to shame by a talented 12-year old. He's a legend, but not because of his voice.
Epic voice of Pink Floyd. Legendary!
Roger is my lord - ChefSkinner
Best...along side Rudolf Schenker from the Scorpions
Simple man live epic vocal
Brent has got the best voice in my opinion... he’s got what I like to call a five-octave voice which a lot of the singers here don’t possess... listen to Beyond The Sun or Her Name Is Alice... or all of their stuff.
Kurt Cobain better than Layne Staley? John Lennon better than Layne Staley? I like both of those guys as songwriters but Staley's vocals blow both of them out the water! Just listen to "Man in the Box, " "Love Hate Love, " "Would? , " "Rooster, " "I Stay Away, " "We Die Young, " "Bleed the Freak, " "Frogs, " etc
Due to his untimely death, he will forever go down as the most underrated voice in rock... There are a lot of vocalists in front of him simply because their band was more successful. Bad measurement
Top 10 at least.
This guy knows how to singV 7 Comments
Another Day. 'enough said
No body belts out a scream from the nether regions better than JIM MORRISON! True passion and a give all or nothing from his deepest core! No pretenses here. Enigmatic, charismatic, frightening and beautiful! All in the same, melt me like butter, deep, haunting voice that is like NO OTHER!
The End, Spanish Caravan, Strange Days. Just some of the songs they Jim Morrison's vocal talent shines through. Although, not technically brilliant, his voice ecoes through the emotional spectrum and haunts you. His natural baritone perfect for the music of The Doors. Also, his lyrics are so profound and meaningful, that resonate with you. A member of one of the greatest bands ever.
He is the one that paved the road for most of the other vocalists on here
Jim Morrison should DEFINEATLY be #1.V 4 Comments
Alex Turner is brilliant! He has a great voice, amazing lyrics, and he's great at guitar too. The Arctic Monkeys are just magic.
Come on, he deserves better.
Are we going to ignore this guy? Seriously? He was one of the pioneers of rock, and he wrote on of the first hard rock songs, helter skelter. And he delivered on it, just like everything else he wrote
This is honestly disrespectful to him. He's classic and everyone knows his band. He was a pioneer for rock! Come on guys - booklover24
Paul at #43 - what an injustice! The man has incredible vocal range.
Hey look, it's Paul.V 2 Comments
He's a pop singer but his fans fantasize that he's a rock singer.
I thought he was pop
In time, Adam will end up being #1.
I'm very surprised that he's not on this list, that guy sure has some pipes!
How is he this far down he's by far voice wise top 15 at least
Best damn rock singer ever! Just listen to VH Dreams!
No one can falsetto like Matthew Bellamy. He has a huge range and he sounds absolutely amazing. Listen to Plug in Baby. You'll see what I'm talking about.
Why is he only 18th have any of you heard madness
He deserves to be in the top 10. Only listen to Megalomania or Survival.
Micro cuts.V 1 Comment
I'm laughing my ass off...Eddie deserves to be in the top 10 you morons. No one sings with more emotion than the god damn lead singer of Pearl Jam
I truly think that because Vedder is still alive and Pearl Jam has taken more of a Grateful Dead approach (concerts as opposed to singles), that he remains under-appreciated. For me...definitely top 10.
My ela teacher loves this guy, with Pearl Jam, although because I'm in the 7th grade I'm the onay student know who he is
He is legendary. Truly amazing. There is not that many singers that when they sing you feel it in your soul. Its like a burst of energy that runs through your body. People that doesn't feel that... I don't have anything to say to them.
Soulful singer, fantastic voice, charisma. Watch him on the 2013 I Heart Radio Award show when he sang "Stay".
He is the benchmark of rock singing and truly inspirational, Enthusiastic, Perfect guy. Proud to be an Echelon. <3 #echelon.
The best final! He can sing every kind of style and perfects it every time =D
4 octaves and 8 semitones of vocal range. Can effortlessly hold notes (at various pitches) for 20 seconds or more. Was picked over the likes of Chris Cornell, M. Shadows, and Ozzy Osbourne to be the front-man for Slash's tour and follow-up solo records. Was asked asked personally by the members of Led Zeppelin to fill in for Robert Plant for a tour. Filled in for Axl Rose at the Guns 'n' Roses Hall of Fame induction. Is currently in an incredibly epic band (Alter Bridge) with the former members of Creed. Has collaborated with singing instructors that have worked with the likes of Axl Rose and Ozzy Osbourne.
Why is this guy not a world sensation?
This man on no 63? well voting here is useless.
One of the best.
Just listen to the last Alter Bridge album and Slash's too.
