Best Rock Albums of All Time (Excluding Greatest Hits)

Hannibalbarka

The Top Ten

1 Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

It is hard to pick between this and Zeppelin IV, but overall as an album the songs are put together so perfectly. This will honestly be the most well spent 42 minutes of your life. And honestly... Journey is alright but it has nothing on Floyd, Zeppelin, Queen, and a bunch of other bands.

Led Zeppelin IV and Night at the Opera are also really epic but this one can really change your mind. The Dark Side of the moon has a concept, a whole lotta great wise lyrics and I love albums that are like a trip into the music.

This album experimented so many sounds, every song fades beautifully into the next one, and its the 2nd most sold album in rock history - fidelcanojr

2 Appetite For Destruction - Guns N Roses

These were the days when Guns N' Roses were #1. This album was the only reason they were as big as they were. This album is sensational! Legendary!

When Guns and Roses was the best...

The original lineup of guns n roses made this and kicked ass. This is the best album ever - xrpmx13

Awesome for sure but not too five material at all. Maybe not top ten.

3 Every Picture Tells a Story - Rod Stewart

Exile On Main Street, Sgt Pepper, Every Picture Tells A Story, Are You Experienced, Never Mind The Bollocks, Cosmo's Factory, Hunky Dory, Dark Side Of The Moon, Truth, Ogdens Nut Gone Celebrated Flake and A Nod's As good As A Wink To A Blind Horse.
That's the absolute top ten and nothing else can overclass those albums. Nevermind by Nirvana is a good addition.
Thes albums made and coloured Rock & Roll after the greats, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis opened a door no one can shut again. - phr

4 Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin

The greatest rock album ever... But only real rockers could understand it. Why is Guns N' Roses on top? Appetite is a very good album and maybe the best debut album too but it is definitely not the best rock album of all time... And what the hell's linkin park doing on this list?

Led Zeppelin. Country musicians. Blues musicians. Rock musicians. The band with the greatest drummer of all time, one of the greatest guitarists and possibly the best lead singer. Oh, and John Paul Jones - a one man band who gave Zep the edge and yet is often overlooked. Bit like a cake mix, they're outstanding on their own, but mix 'em together and you have something far, far superior. Best band ever.

By far their best album. Why is Escape on here? I mean it's an ok album but NUMBER 1? That's just biased. - UFasten8Me

This is the album that propelled the greatest rock band ever to fame. How is this below Guns n Roses? - dlbk03

5 Nevermind - Nirvana

This is one of the greatest albums with some of the greatest tracks of all time for example. Smells like teen spirit lithium come as you are in bloom drain you polly are all great tracks can't believe kurt killed himself but nirvana will always live on in my heart let it be!

This album changed rock and I'm sorry if you don't know this album you have no TASTE in MUSIC PEOPLE!

On this list only because of the despair and honesty of the tortured soul who created it. Life changing for sure but I think timing had everything to do with this albums success. A truly great album for sure but not top ten.

A lot of the fans are really pretentious but this is about the album, and it’s a masterpiece. - Ethansics

6 Master of Puppets - Metallica

The Greatest album ever. This album has 5 songs that that just as monumental as the band itself. You can listen to just one song fifty times and it will still sound fresh. Other songs are great too, but can't be compared to other songs in this album. The worst song in this album-Leper Messiah is it self a great song. This album just pushed metal beyond everything. Undoubtedly number 1. And it's dedicated to living memory of The Great CLIFF BURTON.

How can Hybrid Theory be above the greatest album of all time? Master Of Puppets is the best album ever created! 8 songs, 8 masterpieces, 8 gifts from heaven. - MetalDisciple

I think this should be higher, this should be at least in the Top 5

I think this is a GREAT album... but what is Hybrid Theory doing above this? The adrenaline and energy in the riffs from Battery to Damage Inc. are just insane! CANNOT KILL THE BATTERY!

7 Back in Black - AC/DC

This is the best Rock Album ever, no doubt about that. The whole Album is a masterpiece; especially Hells Bells, Back in Black and You shook me all night long are just brilliant. It's a mystery for me, why it is only on Rank No. 12.

This is the Greatest Album In all the time! AC/DC ROCKS! And they have one of the best albums... Back In Black! This Should be Number 1!

We are in the rock category, remember. This is straight rock and blows away everything else. You really can't compare this to Beatles or Queen, although they rule in pop and progressive respectively.

hell yeah

8 American Idiot - Green Day

Every song on this album is a masterpiece. This should be at the very least in the top 3. Nothing since this came out is anywhere near it's brilliance. Unbelievable lyrics, music, story and most of all its meaning. Thank God for Green Day!

All songs in this album is a masterpiece

Number 10? Are you kidding me! This should be top 3 at the very least. Nothing this century comes close to this masterpiece.

This Album and hybrid theory proof that the 2000s had definitely better rock than this Hippie crap. they made rock great for the Mainstream. wonderful era of music

V 15 Comments
9 Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park

This was not even the best album of the year it came out, much less better than Sgt. Pepper, Revolver, or the White Album. Get real.

best album ever! This is the album that has made linkin park one of the greatest bands of 21st century!

Mind blowing album. The best selling debut album in this century

Appalled that this made a greatest albums list of any kind.

10 The Beatles (The White Album) - The Beatles

Top 10 list of best rock albums of all time could be easily filled with Beatles albums only. What makes The Beatles (The White Album) outstanding is that this is their only double album, meaning two times more music to enjoy.

The Beatles are not just one of the best rock acts of all time: they are considered to be some of the greatest musicians of all time. Surely, their works should be more represented on this list.

This album influenced so many artists and bands in music today, so this album deserves a higher rating than Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory."

You're totally right, I don't know what the hell is linkin Park doing 5th - Disturbedpotato

The Beatles, had always been on the crest of the rock wave, on this double album they were working alone together and is still one of their best efforts for originality breaking new ground and breaking away from the standard rock album format. It that brought them up close and personal to their fans. It was also incognito, the beginning of their eventual break-up well All things must pass/ a cloud burst doesn't last all day. Jerome Walsh

The Newcomers

? Red - King Crimson
? The Bends - Radiohead

The Contenders

11 Night at the Opera - Queen

A day at the races was better, but these two albums along with the highly underrated queen 2 album makes queen top 3 bands of all time alongside sabbath and floyd

This album has has one song? One of Queen's worst? It angers me that someone even thinks this. Bohemian Rhapsody, Love of My Life, 39, You're My Best Friend, Death On Two Legs...Definitely not just Bohemian. I actually don't think it is their best, I like A Kind of Magic more, but it definitely isn't one of their worst.

This album has ONE SONG. And yes, Bohemian Rhapsody is the greatest song of all time, but this album in general is nothing special, it's actually one of Queen's worst. - ATiM

Grossly over-rated.

V 6 Comments
12 Are You Experienced? - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Just this studio album alone is like a greatest hits album - Sabbath

Hybrid theory better, American idiot, dookie? Haha come on

Electric Ladyland is better

This album makes Hybrid Theory look like a Nickleback album

V 1 Comment
13 The Number of The Beast - Iron Maiden

Awesome album, but its really metal, not rock

Dickinson, Harris, Murray, Smith & Burr... Nothing more to say...

Up The Irons Up to the top 5 list

14 Who's Next - The Who

Come on guys...don't get me wrong, I love Linkin Park. They're my favorite band...but Who's Next is the greatest rock album ever. Vote this at least into the top 10!

They are called opinions... Everyone is allowed to like what they like... Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean your right and they are morons... Grow up people

People voting for Linkin Park and Green Day? Morons...

Whos next and Quadrophenia are the best Albums ever!

15 Quadrophenia - The Who

Opera+rock+brass= Quadrophenia which was the first album ever to have synthensizers, but was later perfected in Who's Next, the quad speaker which was a technical marvel at the time, and some of the best bass and drum lines ever written. This was supposed to be their last album and went out with a bang until a few more years when they joined together once more.

A brilliant work of art, start to finish.

The vocals and rifts changed my world

Unquestionably the finest collection of rock songs on this double album without a letdown from 1-21. the writing is prolific, the vocals are mesmarizing, moons drumming is dominating, the guitar work is solid. the production value is perfect. simply the best rock ever recorded. at over 40 yrs old it has proven to be timeless

16 Use Your Illusion I - Guns N Roses

Anyone like right next door to hell? That's my PERSONAL favorite

November Rain is the only great song on the album.

Use your Illusion II is better.

17 Colour and the Shape - Foo Fighters

Definitely the Foo's best. Everlong, My Hero, Monkey Wrench, Hey! Johnny Park, and so much more.

18 Use Your Illusion II - Guns N' Roses

Besides My World, all the songs on here are amazing, especially Estranged, Civil War, and You Could Be Mine.

This album is by far my favorite by Guns N' Roses. My World is joke, but all the other songs are amazing! - rizzo824

19 Exile On Main St. - The Rolling Stones

Rocks Off is one of my top favorite Rolling Stones songs of all time. Definitely should be higher.

Together with Truth by the Jeff Beck Group this album belongs to the fundations of heavy metal. - phr

Sorry for my coment, it belongs with Paranoid by Black Sabbath - phr

This lp is the best Stones music I've ever heard. Mick Taylor plays fantastic lead guitar. I recommend this album for pure r&r.

20 Paranoid - Black Sabbath

It's the album that made heavy metal a genre

This album made heavy metal. Every sobg is master piece this should be in top 10 - Disturbedpotato

Paranoid, Ironman, Warpigs etc. Absolute classics of the metal genre and pop culture staples. Play Paranoid!

21 Dookie - Green Day

Why is this no. 28 when it has more votes than some in the top 10. Can't the program designed to place the albums in order count?

This has more votes than the number 1 on the list Guns and roses! What is going on with the votes man? Time for someone to sort this problem out please.

Should be a lot higher than 18. One of the albums of the year in 1994. Breakthrough album that that is still significant today.

BEST ALBUM EVER! - rowie855

22 Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin

It was really good how Jimmy Page and John Jones did all of their guitar stuff in the record; I really liked the one riff on black dog, where it goes up and then it goes down, like a spectrum (CIS scum), and then when the levee breaks was so cool how the drums fed off of the guitars and the screech from Robert was just so intense. Best guitar album of the year: all years

Love it, but um, IV is already on the list, currently has the top spot.

23 Revolver - The Beatles

What? 42nd? It's their best.

Are you kidding me?! 25?!

24 Led Zeppelin ll - Led Zeppelin

Lz at their best

25 American Tragedy - Hollywood Undead
26 One Day Remains - Alter Bridge
27 Nightmare - Avenged Sevenfold

I can listen to this album over and over again... The vocals are awesome... you think the singer has one of the best voices I've heard in a long time

This album is overrated - Disturbedpotato

DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM

28 From Death to Destiny - Asking Alexandria
29 Abbey Road - The Beatles

The greatest albums of all time.. Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper, Revolver, Dark Side Of The Moon, Rumors, Nevermind, A Night At The Opera, The White Album, Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Wall, Led Zep 4, The Stranger, Exile On Main Street, Born To Run, Rubber Soul, Band On The Run, Imagine, Tug Of War, Pet Sounds, Captain Fantastic, Songs In The Key Of Life, Plastic Ono Band, Frampton Comes Alive, Venus and Mars, Boston, Tommy... - frank

Your 100% right, Beach Boys Pet Sounds on most of the top albums of all time list is usually in the top 3. Most rock groups praise this album as the best for pure musical genius.

This album is the best thing to sex

Where is abbey road

30 Van Halen - Van Halen

This album is much better than #25, At least top 15 - VanHalen

Best debut album of all...oh wait...OK 2nd best debut album of all time.

31 Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
32 Dirty Work - All Time Low
33 Highway to Hell - AC/DC

The votes are for albums where there are no throw away songs. Highway to Hell, and really High Voltage are both in that category.

Highway to Hell is one of the best albums in the history, why is 40th?

Why is it 33? It's One of the best albums ever - Disturbedpotato

34 Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea - Black Stone Cherry
35 Deep Purple In Rock - Deep Purple

I'm shocked that this album wasn't even on the list let alone not in the top 5. So many average albums listed here and yet this breakthrough masterpiece is totally ignored. Speed King and Child In Time would have been enough to make the album on their own, but the raw intensity of the music and vocals leave most other albums in the shade. No Machine Head on the list either. Another great album but In Rock started the ball rolling and was more in yer face.

The very first hard rock album (no blues, but not metal either) it's so dynamic and raw you put it on and you are practically in the room. Put down more or less live, limited overdubs and finished within weeks. That's how they did back then. Nearly 45 years old too, a genius band.

THIS is the BEST Hard Rock album of all time! (way ahead of Sabbath, Led Zeppelin & Co. ). Shamefully underrated!

Best hard rock album of all time? That comment hurt me.

36 Moving Pictures - Rush
37 ...And Justice for All - Metallica

Wonderful album. I love to live is to die

...And Justice For All - Disturbedpotato

38 Absolutely Live - The Doors
39 Until We Have Faces - Red
40 The Wall - Pink Floyd

How can the wall be 27? Come on people! Another brick in the wall, in the flesh, young lust, etc...

It tells a great story, better than Linkin Park any day

This should be at least in the top 20, it gives you a meaningful history with a great message, all of us have a wall that we have to take down before it consumes us.

Why is this so low? I love this album and is my favorite album ever. But putting it at number 40 is REALLY underselling it.

41 Kid A - Radiohead

Superb album and one of the best experimental pieces of rock ever created.

42 Fallen - Evanescence

This list is stupid, why Fallen is so low?

Debut album by the American nu metal band Evanescence.

Big hits: Bring Me To Life, My Immortal, Going Under.
Suberb songs:Everybody's Fool, My Last Breath, Tourniquet, Imaginary, Hello.
Great songs:Whisper, Taking Over Me, Haunted

43 1984 - Van Halen
44 Rise - Skillet
45 Hopes & Fears - Keane
46 Escape - Journey
47 Metallica - Metallica

This is by far the best album in the history of thw universe, just hear extremely heavy Sad but True, and amazing The Unforgiven (Whoa Whoa).

I actually think that Ride The Lightning is better.

This album and acdc's back in black album are my 2 favorite albums.

One word... MASTERPIECE!

48 In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson

It is sad how little public interest there is in King Crimson. This album is absolute, raw perfection.

49 A Night At The Opera - Queen
50 Ain't Life Grand - Slash's Snakepit
