Mikey's Game Reviews #12: Sonic the HedgehogGarythesnail If you're a gamer, you know Sonic the Hedgehog. Blue Hedgehog? "Fastest thing alive"? Has the most annoying video game fanbase known to man? Yeah, you're referring to Sonic, alright. Sonic is the mascot of Sega and he's simultaneously one of the most beloved and hated video game characters out there. In between Sonic's excellence(like Sonic Colors), there are some duds like Sonic Boom and gosh forbid Sonic 06. This game is what started it all, and in my opinion, it's a good yet overrated game. So, let's get started.
The evil Dr. Robotnik, a mad scientist, has kidnapped helpless baby animals and plans to turn them into evil robots. How? I don't know. But we all know that the good ol' hedgehog with attitude and speed is here to help. Give it up for Sonic!
This is a standard 2-D platformer, but it has unique features. One of these is rings. Whereas Mario gets mushrooms to take an extra hit, Sonic collects rings. As long as you've got one ring, you're good. I found it strange, however, that no matter how many rings you have, taking a hit makes you lose them all. But it doesn't usually hold the game back much. If you finish a level with, I believe 50 rings, you'll get a Chaos Emerald. Getting all of these doesn't unlock a new boss or a new mode-just an alternate scene when you finish the game. Also, while the level design here is mostly good, there is one thing I feel plagues many Sonic games. Sonic's a pretty fast dude, right? He's so fast, in fact, that it's often hard to control him. It may be a staple in the game as well as the series, but I had many times losing a life scratching my head, thinking "where did that come from?".
Music is catchy and fits whatever world it's in, and the graphics are pretty good for an early-90s game. Sonic's impatient foot-tapping never got old.
Awesome level design(mostly), and it's pretty fun to navigate them.
Many cheap deaths due to Sonic's uncontrollable speed, and the reason why Sonic bothered with water levels is beyond me.
The great level design and fun of this game was well worth my time, even though there were some flaws. Some levels were mediocre and the controls were quite tough at times, but it remains a solid title from beginning to end.
FINAL SCORE: 7,5/10
