The Allman Brothers Band was an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969 by brothers Duane Allman and Gregg Allman, as well as Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson.
Skynyrd may be more popular, in the south especially but the ABB is better by a good margin, if you're going by pure talent in musicianship and songwriting. They didn't wave the Dixie flag as much and they were racially integrated so they lose points with the rednecks but at peak their live show was second to none. So many chops they could have reformed the hog.
The music speaks for itself.

Really look at all the stuff ZZ Top has put out over the years. I bet if you're a true rock n roll fan you will know, like, and be able to sing along w/ minimum 30 songs! I recently started downloading a few ( 5-6 ) of their earlier songs & ended up w/ 63! And actually knew all / most of the lyrics for

Swamp Rock... - Britgirl
If CCR were a southern rock band, which they are not (from California) they would be at or near top of this list.
What is ZZ Top doing above CCR?
The top 4 here (Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, CCR) are all great, but I'd change the order to 1. CCR 2. ZZ Top 3. Lynyrd Skynyrd 4. Allman Brothers.
5 The Marshall Tucker Band

30 Point Blank
Interesting, if not predictable list … agreed that 38 Special should be Top 5 with Point Blank Top 10 or better. I'm a native Texan who LOVES Southern Rock and am turning 65 … I've dj'd since I was 18 … I should know a thing or two by now!
31 Drive-By Truckers
They have the best perspective on the whole southern rock thing. 'Southern Rock Opera' is the album that knocks it out of the park, but they've got a lot of depth all the way through their southern thing...
Best southern band. Transcends southern rock and becomes one of the best bands in the world and are still top of their game twenty years after starting.
