Top Ten Heavy Songs by Not Heavy Musicians

The Top Ten
1 The Nile Song - Pink Floyd

One of their earliest songs with Gilmour, and they didn't released heavier songs than this after they released this (1969)

2 Stone Cold Crazy - Queen

An early prototype of thrash metal!

3 End of the World - Gary Moore

This is a metal song for me - it came out in 1982. Gary Moore was mostly a blues/blues rock musician known for songs like "Still Got The Blues" and "Empty Rooms". It's a very big contrast.

4 Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) - Neil Young

A really Black Sabbath alike riff by a folk rock musician...

5 Sweet F.A. - Sweet

Yeah when I discovered this song around 2 months ago it rocked my mind!

6 Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix

SKOG: I'm not the one who needs to be paying attention. You said Hendrix "mostly played blues rock songs with psychedelic elements," but claim he wasn't a "heavy musician." Really don't know what you're talking about, and pretty sure you don't, either.

@visitor I'm sure this song is based on blues, but if you watch the title better, I said HEAVY songs, not Heavy METAL songs... not every heavy music are metal!

This was a blues-riff played slowly with the technique of psych-rock of 60s (psych-rock strumming). which created "heavy psych" as the author is describing. I think both visitor and author is right about it. because if you strum blues-rock slowly (with more pressure/power) it'll create a "heavy riff". same goes for psych rock. try this if you you're not believing me.

He mostly played simply blues rock songs with psychedelic elements, but this one is sounds like closer to the heavy psych!

7 Set Me Free - The Sweet

The only metal Sweet song!

8 Helter Skelter - The Beatles
9 I Want You (She's So Heavy) - The Beatles
10 Whipping Post - Allman Brothers Band
The Contenders
11 Murder in the Skies - Gary Moore

A 1983 song that is very close to power metal, and is over 7 minutes long - coming from a blues/blues rock musician.

12 Crazy Horses - The Osmonds

They are a family pop group, but they released this great hard rock song!

13 Ogre Battle - Queen

This is a metal song, even though they aren't metal.

14 20th Century Boy - T. Rex

T.Rex is very poppy, and this song is poppy enough, but the riff changes everything... it's a protopunk song!

15 Achilles Last Stand - Led Zeppelin

I agree Led Zeppelin have heavy songs but I don't think they are eligible for this list: this list is about music artists that aren't heavy in general. But Led Zeppelin have always been mentioned among the heaviest bands of their era and this is the reason they shouldn't be on this list.

@zxm sorry but I disagree with this many LZ songs you added. 3/4 of the LZ songs can call to heavy, even some people think they are metal. I wanted add only songs by bands that aren't HEAVY, not that they aren't HEAVY METAL.

All right, I can agree Led Zeppelin is not a metal band. but this song is heavy.

I though, by "not heavy" you meant non-metal bands.

16 Jesus of Suburbia - Green Day
17 Black Dog - Led Zeppelin

Oh, I knew it released in '71, but I though it was recorded in '69. guess I was wrong.

Quite a heavy song for a 60s song. the riff proves that. plus Robert Plant's singing is also powerful

18 Nobody’s Fault but Mine - Led Zeppelin
19 Rockin' in the Free World - Neil Young
20 Prayer of the Refugee - Rise Against
21 Harder to Breathe - Maroon 5
22 Kim - Eminem
23 Arrows Fly - Edguy
