More misunderstood than evil. And he can't be considered a true villain because:
1.) He didn't know the toys were alive and could feel pain.
2.) He had no friends that we know of, not the best home life, and an overactive imagination.
I think he just wanted some attention. I feel bad for Sid, but I'm happy he changes after the first movie.
