Top 10 Most Important Albums in Death Metal History

The Top Ten
1 Altars of Madness - Morbid Angel

Even though this was released in 1989 (two years after "Scream Bloody Gore" and four years after "Seven Churches"), it's considered one of the "first true death metal albums".

Morbid Angel's true debut album, not counting "Abominations of Desolation" which was released in 1986 but not released until 1991.

This album being number one and considered one of the "first true death metal albums", that makes sense.

I mean "Abominations of Desolation" was recorded in 1986 but not released until 1991.

2 Seven Churches - Possessed

Legend has it this was the first death metal album to exist.

Without this album there wouldn't be Death Metal

The first Death metal album has to be number 1

3 Scream Bloody Gore - Death

Like "Seven Churches", this was one of the early/first few death metal albums to exist.

4 Symbolic - Death
5 Heartwork - Carcass

It inspired Adam Dutkiewicz to play guitar and form Killswitch Engage.

The album that helped develop the melodic death metal genre.

6 Realm of Chaos - Bolt Thrower

This was one of the albums that helped define the British death metal and grindcore scene.

7 Slowly We Rot - Obituary

Most Obituary fans prefer "Cause Of Death" but I agree this album was important.

8 Blackwater Park - Opeth
9 Obscura - Gorguts
10 Cause of Death - Obituary

Important for featuring James Murphy, who had just left Death to record this album.

Can't have a list like this without some Obituary. "Cause Of Death" is a classic.

This album needs to be much more higher.

The Contenders
11 Unquestionable Presence - Atheist

Obviously an important album because it inspired so much of what technical death metal is.

12 Horrified - Repulsion

Recorded in 1986 but not released officially until 1989, this was one of the early albums that defined grindcore.

13 Tomb of the Mutilated - Cannibal Corpse
14 World Downfall - Terrorizer

Obviously an important album because it includes four then-unknown musicians who had joined notable death metal/grindcore bands, such as Morbid Angel (David Vincent and Pete Sandoval), Napalm Death (Jesse Pintado) and Nausea (Oscar Garcia), by the time of its release in '89.

15 Consuming Impulse - Pestilence
16 Slaughter of the Soul - At the Gates

Bible for the Gothenburg death metal movement.

17 None So Vile - Cryptopsy

Created one of the most brutal metal sounds in the 90s (brutal technical death metal).

18 Left Hand Path - Entombed
19 Severed Survival - Autopsy
20 Leprosy - Death
21 Like an Ever Flowing Stream - Dismember
22 Deicide - Deicide
23 Annihilation of the Wicked - Nile

Technical death metal perfected.

24 Focus - Cynic
25 Effigy of the Forgotten - Suffocation
