Most Important Versions of Windows

This is a list of versions of Windows by historical importance, not by popularity.
The Top Ten
1 Windows 95

Introduced the taskbar and start menu, not to mention other important UI elements that are still present today.

Windows 95 caused Microsoft Windows itself to take shape.

2 Windows 1.0

The very first version.

3 Windows XP
4 Windows 10

This is the one we currently are using and it is the best so far!

Windows 10 is what introduced Cortana.

5 Windows NT 3.1

While not one of the most well known versions, this version is important as it was the first version with the Windows NT kernel that is still used today.

6 Windows Vista

The interface on this is much different from how it was on previous operating systems.

7 Windows 7

The appearance changed significantly with Windows 7. One of the biggest changes is that instead of the windows being large tabs on the previous operating systems, the tabs were more organized on Windows 7, and instead of the start button saying start, it’s just the colours in the Windows logo.

8 Windows 8

The first version to introduce Windows Store apps.

It was also the first to have a start screen.

9 Windows 2000
10 Windows ME

Windows ME is here? It has many bugs and crashes

The Contenders
11 Windows 98
12 Windows 3.1

Ignore my comment on Windows 3.0. I got these 2 confused.

13 Windows NT 4.0
14 Windows Server 2003
15 Windows 3.0

This is where Windows operating systems really started to become popular.

16 Windows 2.0
17 Windows 8.1

The start bar was brought back even though it was only taken away for Windows 8.

18 Windows 11
19 Windows RT
