Most Important Versions of Windows

This is a list of versions of Windows by historical importance, not by popularity.

The Top Ten

1 Windows 95

It was the first to include the taskbar and the menu screen. - 3DG20

Introduced the taskbar and start menu, not to mention other important UI elements that are still present today.

2 Windows 1.0

The very first version.

I had to vote for this, because if it wasn’t for Windows 1.0, the others wouldn’t exist. - 3DG20

3 Windows XP
4 Windows 7

The appearance changed significantly with Windows 7. One of the biggest changes is that instead of the windows being large tabs on the previous operating systems, the tabs were more organized on Windows 7, and instead of the start button saying start, it’s just the colours in the Windows logo. - 3DG20

5 Windows 2000
6 Windows 10

This is the one we currently are using and it is the best so far! - Duskwhisper

Windows 10 is what introduced Cortana. - 3DG20

7 Windows NT 3.1

While not one of the most well known versions, this version is important as it was the first version with the Windows NT kernel that is still used today.

8 Windows 3.1

Ignore my comment on Windows 3.0. I got these 2 confused. - 3DG20

9 Windows 8

The first version to introduce Windows Store apps.

It was also the first to have a start screen. - 3DG20

10 Windows Vista

The interface on this is much different from how it was on previous operating systems. - 3DG20

The Contenders

11 Windows Server 2003
12 Windows 98
13 Windows ME

Windows ME is here? It has many bugs and crashes - BorisRule

14 Windows NT 4.0
15 Windows 3.0

This is where Windows operating systems really started to become popular. - 3DG20

16 Windows 2.0
17 Windows 8.1

The start bar was brought back even though it was only taken away for Windows 8. - 3DG20
