Coins aren't entirely useless. They give you small boosts once you collect more than ten, which can be helpful.

4 Interesting Unlockable Criteria

6 Hold Multiple Items

9 More Dynamic Obstacles On Tracks

Tracks in MK8 like Bowser's Castle were just to standard with not enough unique obstacles or set ups like Wii or Double Dash had. - Darth-Snorpy
