Top 10 Innocent Sounding Songs with Innuendos We Missed as Kids

As kids, we remember jamming to a lot of songs, and we had an innocent childhood back then. But what about when we hear them again today, and notice that the song contains sexual innuendos? Let's take a look and see...
The Top Ten
1 Barbie Girl - Aqua

It was a fun innocent song you have heard if you existed back in the summer of 1997, which had a mix of bubblegum pop and Eurodance. But it was until when we realize how inappropriate the song's lyrics was, with "you can brush my hair, undress me everywhere". It was so bad that it led Mattel Inc. to sue MCA Records for the song in 2000 because it violated the Barbie trademark and turned Barbie into a sex object, and referred to her as a "Blonde Bimbo". The lawsuit was dismissed two years later, when it was ruled the song was protected as a parody.

2 Y.M.C.A. - Village People

It was a fun song everyone heard in their childhood that played in parties and sporting events. But however, while you remember the part where "you can hang out with the boys", the song is meant to target disco's gay audience, as the group is homosexual. But as it got more popular and mainstream, most people never noticed the gay fantasies that were included. It is now a song adored by the LGBTQ+ community.

3 Poker Face - Lady Gaga

It was another song that helped Lady Gaga to be a huge popstar. Some of you may be old enough to remember listening to this song in 2008. But at the beginning of her career, her songs were about the "mystery around her". The song was about her bisexuality and features various sexual innuendos.

This song always came off as annoying to me. Lady Gaga's other stuff is better, honestly...

So nice to hear this while other people act clueless and think it's another generic pop song

4 Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams

This song was supposed to be about a story between spring and fall, which represents freedom and friends during the counterculture 1960s decade. However, it wasn't meant to be about the summer of 1969, but it is a reference to the sex position. Also, Adams was only ten back in 1969, which he is too young to fit in the hippie community. So, I am pretty sure this is the easiest innuendo we understand on the list because we all know what the number means.

To think, the Summer of '69 was before the moon landing and the first release of Scooby Doo.

5 Genie in a Bottle - Christina Aguilera

The song was the breakthrough success of Christina Aguilera. It was a time when there were a lot of new hit artists such as Britney Spears. This song may sound like an innocent fun song, but it uses sexual references to talk about the theme of self-respect. She also says she is waiting for someone to "rub her the right way".

6 (I Just) Died in Your Arms - Cutting Crew

The 1980s was an era of emotions in music, and had a lot of hits including this one that is still popular today. This song still appears in weddings and karaoke today. It may sound romantic as compared to Romeo & Juliet. But however, it was written by frontman Nick Van Eede while he was having sex with his girlfriend.

I'm sure kids that knew of this song found it depressing and not listenable

7 Locked Out of Heaven - Bruno Mars

I'm very sure almost every one of you TopTenners feel nostalgic enough to remember when this song came out, which was in 2012. But the term "locked out of heaven" means it was a metaphoric paradise for the two.

Unlike other songs on this list, the artist didn't even try to hide it.

8 No Diggity - Blackstreet

Whether you are more of a pop fan who tends listening to the hits or a rap fan who knows a lot about Dr. Dre, this song was the bomb of '96. But if you closely listen to the lyrics, you can hear references to prostitution.

9 Shut Up and Drive - Rihanna

This may sound like an action-filled song back then, but it was no surprise when we found the "car top" was just a metaphor.

10 Whistle - Flo Rida

Some of you may hate this song or like this song, but it was a hit that played back in 2012. Most people accept it as a sweet sing-along, until when we realize that "whistle" was a metaphor for oral sex.

The Contenders
11 Sugar - Maroon 5

This one is misunderstood...and then everyone just straight-up knows Animals is creepy. Ha!

12 Cake By the Ocean - DNCE

Why so suggestive? This could have been a really cute song.

13 E.T. - Katy Perry
14 Teenage Dream - Katy Perry
15 Hey, Soul Sister - Train

Song is about blowjobs. "Lipstick stains on the front lobe of my left side brain" Brain is referencing to giving/getting head. "So I let you blow my mind" Letting someone give you a BJ.

16 Milkshake - Kelis

I don't think that sounds innocent, so I did not add this on the list.

17 Something in the Way - Nirvana

This isn't really something you missed as kids but anyways, Kurt Cobain's "Something In The Way" is actually about his life. He talks about living under a bridge, which he said happened when he got kicked out of the house and had to live under a nearby bridge. He expresses his feelings and emotions by saying "something in the way" - he thought that there was something always stopping him from being happy.

18 LoveGame - Lady Gaga
19 Best Song Ever - One Direction

Apparently "said her daddy was a dentist and said I had a dirty mouth" is connected in the sense that you can tell in your mouth whether it's been "opened" by yk.. 69

20 Untouched - The Veronicas

Apparently it's about feeling like you haven't had sex in a while. I'm sure lots of kids loved this and didn't realise it.

21 What's My Age Again? - blink-182

More like an angsty 12 year old song but I'm sure none of them realised it was about a man that was an old virgin and scared to have sex.

22 I Took a Pill in Ibiza - Mike Posner
23 Things I'll Never Say - Avril Lavigne
24 All Around the World - Justin Bieber
