The Union Jack is instantly recognisable because;
1. Everyone knows what the UK is. Simple. It's up there with US, India, Russia, China, Germany, Australia, and possibly Canada and Japan.
2. It features on the flag of Australia, New Zealand, and many Pacific nations.
3. It featured on the flag of the old British colonial nations (Canada, 13 Colonies, India, South Africa, Rhodesia, etc.) - Pikachion

All the other flags are just basically copies of each other. Britain's flag is basically plastered on 25% of the world's total flags. All those 3 color combo flags like Italy, Spain, France, Germany are confusing.
