Drought Season (Episode 2: The Detroit Lions)

Welcome back to another edition of drought season. Today we’re gonna tackle the Detroit Lions. One of the older teams in the league yet they don’t have a lot to show for it.

Where to begin? This team was established in 1930 as the Portsmouth Spartans. They moved to Detroit in 1934. Early on they had some success winning 4 NFL championships! This is excellent! Why are they on here? You might be wondering. Well yes dear viewer this is great. There’s just one small thing about this. All 4 championships were before the NFL/AFL merger. The last was 1957. 62 years ago. They have yet to even make it to the championship in the Super Bowl era. And we’re approaching the 100 year mark of this team’s existence too. They might go 100 years and have no super Bowl to show for it.

They were mediocre at best throughout the 70s and 80s. Then comes 1991 where they were the closest to making the super bowl. They made the NFC championship.... only to get their ass kicked by the Redskins 41-10. The rest of the decade was either 5-11 seasons in (‘92, ‘96, and ‘98.) Or Wild card losses in 5 years ‘93,’94,’95,’97, and ‘99.

Then there’s the 21st century. Oh dear God the 2000s were hell for this team and let’s not even mention 0-16 in 2008. Yeah this franchise hit rock bottom and outside of a few fluke playoff appearances in 2011,2014,and 2016 the entire 21st century has been pretty forgettable. Oh and for the record they won a whopping ZERO playoff games in all 3 of those playoff appearances. Honestly I don’t see any end to their misery any time soon. The Lions teams you see today are simply mediocre. They’re just There. Not good enough for playoffs but not bad enough to get top draft picks. I don’t think anyone looks at this team and says. “Wow what a tough opponent we have to face this week!” They’ve had some good players yes. Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson were studs but they weren’t enough. It just feels like something is holding them back from achieving their full potential. I can’t tell if it’s Matthew Stafford or Matt Patricia and the coaching staff. Their “Patriot Ways” aren’t seeming to help at all even with former patriots like LeGarrette Blount, Danny Amendola, Trey Flowers and Justin Coleman. I Can’t tell what it is but this team just feels like they’re being held back and likely will be for awhile to come. Don’t worry Detroit fans at least you still have the Tigers Pistons and Redwings to watch instead!

Just think it use to be the Red Wings as old reliable now its just middle of the road squads aside form the Tigers being the worst team in MLB that lost some great pitchers. I'm not a fan of this Piston crew, but they need to convince same goes for the Midwest Lions as well. With high pressure I expect this team won't quite to the very end and fight for all they got knowing three major figures seats will be on the line. - visitor

Do Redskins please - visitor

Don’t worry I’ll get to them eventually - visitor

Yeah they have had some really good players, but just couldn't get there. Another good one. - 2storm
