Elizabeth Clark Phair is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist and pianist born on April 17, 1967 in Connecticut.
In the early 90s, Phair released three cassettes called "Girly-Sound" that were wide spread hand to hand, causing her to get a record deal and release her debut album "Exile in Guyville" in 1993. It is generally regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time and has been included on several Best lists since its release, despite not having been commercially successful . She released two more albums in the 90s, which had moderate success and were met with positive yet not as enthusiastic reviews. During that time, Phair's trademark was a lo-fi indie rock sound with sexually explicit yet feminist lyrics. In the 21st century, Phair departed from her previous musical direction and adapted a melodic and energetic pop rock-oriented style, similar to the music of Avril Lavigne or Kelly Clarkson. Reaction to her more recent music has been very mixed, with several fans and critics alike accusing her of selling out, though her chart positions have decreased since then. Phair's latest album as of 2016 has been released in 2010.
